I just started my 2000pts mekkaorks in a dirty badmoon color scheme. Primarily I prime all infantry in white, vehicles in black. I then wash all the infantry with a brown wash (Gryphon Sepia/the like). I find the white primer w/ the wash helps make the 100 ork mob easier to paint. I dry brush the vehicles w/ silver. And that's kind of my starting point for painting both infantry and vehicles.

I like to start white as it is always easier to make things darker than lighter, especially with washes.

I prime my orks black. Haven't tried a white undercoat so far, but for me it works well.
Which color do you want to use for the skin?

I prime mine white, and then wash it with a dark green (so Thraka green?) thats my "base" to paint from. Its plenty dark, so weather your painting them dark skin tone, or bright like mine, its a good starting point either way

I totally forgot this little gem: http://www.miniwargaming.com/content/3OeWD3dwJhm0
I used it to paint my grots, it's perfect for these little weenies, but personally, I think the orks come out too bright.

I like to start with black, mostly because I like orks to have a bit of a dark look to them as opposed to really clean and bright. Plus when you have 100+ orks staring you down like you owe them something saving time on shading is always nice.

I prime black, base coat off white, then wash in a range of colors depending on what I'm going for - my orks range the greens, browns, blues, and reds so far.

I'm somewhat curious as to why you'd opt to prime with black if you're going to base coat them off-white. Seems like you're making more work for yourself, considering the reverse - prime white, coat or two of off-white on the skin, then hit darker parts with a black undercoat - grants coverage far more easily...
Generally, it depends on your color scheme and preference regarding the brightness of your orks' skin. My boys have predominantly black clothes (as much a result of my primer choice as a reason for it, honestly. A tad lazy, perhaps, but as ManSandwich hinted, there are usually a LOT of boys to paint. Besides, it doesn't look half bad ) and I shoot for a saturated, but not overly bright, green skin, so priming black is the obvious choice.

I prime black because I prefer the way it makes the other colors look - to me its a small price to pay - besides, gives me time to figure out the rest of the scheme for the unit while it dries.

Actually been experimenting with the yellow base coat route tonight - will try to post some samples today when I get off work.
