Subject: Masking and Decorators Tape Question

I have seen alot of people reference using either masking or decorating tape to mark out an area on a model to achieve straight lines (since it cant seep through the tape). However when I recently tried to use this on a primed FW kit the tape managed to rip the primer off from beneath it essentially making any other purpose wasted. I am guessing this may be due to the mold release making the primer adhere poorly however I washed the model thoroughly before trying this, and gave the primer a good 6 hours to dry before attempting the process.
Am I going wrong somewhere here or just unlucky?

Normally I will let primer coats dry for 24 hours or more before I paint on them...and I always wash resin, sometimes twice.
Chances are good your primer pulled off as a result of both issues. Also, while masking tape is easy to find - I tend to prefer frisket paper for models and will reserve the regular masking tape for painting walls and trim. If you want to go the masking tape route - make sure you get a good brand name as opposed to bottom shelf tape. 3M Blue is what is most often used in the US, not sure if the same brand/color combo is used on your side as well.
Fristket paper works on the same concept, however it tends to not have as much stick to it...conforms better to odd shapes and you can cut out emblems and what not as needed from it.

Probably a problem with your tape. I got one from my art store and I was getting exactly the problem you described. Since I switched to tamiya it solve all my problems.

Wow. Normally, painter's tape isn't nearly tacky enough to pull paint off like that. I hate to ask a dumb question, but are you sure you were using painter's tape and not masking tape?
An alternative is electrical tape. I wouldn't leave it on too long and I'd be darn sure the paint's dry underneath, but it's only just a bit tackier than painter's tape. I've gotten some good effects from it before.

I was using green "adhesive free" decorators tape, feels a little fabric like and didnt seem to have much "stick" on it, was only on the model for under a minute before I realised one bit was poorly positioned and went to remove it and the primer just came up with it.
