Hey there. I sometimes like to listen to a 40k Podcast while driving/painting, and I've been using 40kRadio since I only play 40k.

But it's awful. I really can't be arsed to listen to two hours of guys talking about friends they know, where they live, what they ate last night, what films they went to see at the weekend, how their lives are at the moment and calling anything they don't like 'gay'. Plus, a billion Armourcast and Battlefoam adverts. I can see that they're trying to make it seem like a community, but if you're on the other side of the world, it's just really dull.

Can anyone recommend any regular 40k-based podcast that is well-edited (as in, concise/to the point), has good interviews, reviews, etc??

I have always liked "The Independent Characters", "The Screaming Heretic" and "The Overlords".

EVERY podcast is going to have a little "What's going on in my area" stuff, but they are better!

Also, if you JUST want to be amused and don't care that it is about Fantasy, try out "The Black Sun" it's the most filthy and amazing thing put out!

+1 For the overlords, but sadly they are not very concise. They are based on your side of the pond though, so they have that going for them.

I've been through quite a few podcasts and the two 40K ones that give great quality repeatedly are the Overlords and The Independent Characters. The ICs have an interview with Gav Thorpe coming up about his Path trilogy in their next episode.

Many people like the 11th Company, but it doesn't work for me, mainly down to the black and white nature of tactical advice- everything is either "pure win" or "epic fail"

If what you are looking for is a tightly edited podcast that lasts between 30 and 90 minutes with great content all the way through, then so am I, but I haven't found it yet!

I only listen to the Independent Characters and 40k Radio.

I know you don't want to listen to 40k Radio, but don't lump the two together just because I like them both. They are certainly not the same.

Start out with their coverage of Imperial Armor 9 and 10, the Badab Wars. That will give you a good feel about what these guys are about. I won't say "professional", because they're certainly hobbiests like the rest of us, but they definitely put on a good show and work hard at their podcasting.

I don't think I'm steering you wrong here, ArbitorIan. You can download them for free from iTunes or listen to them on their website.

Their Imperial Armor 9 episode.

Their Imperial Armor 10 episode.

I also like their Narrative Gaming Episode. My group runs narrative campaigns, so this was a good listen for me.

I really don't like 40k radio. Romeo is too pushy. The hosts are juvenile.

I recommend World's End Radio out of Australia. It's excellent.

11th company all the way.

Here's a few tips:

1) Just skip the first three minutes as it's just a lame music intro and Neil announcing what you're about to listen to, so the actual podcast doesn't begin until roughly three minutes in.
2) You can skip about 1.5 hours of "Pat's Corner" which is the middle part unless you hear someone you know about talking about something you're interested in. In general you can skip the first three minutes, 1.5 hours of Pat's corner, and still have the first and last sections last you about another 1.5 hours of quality discussion. IMO of course.

The Independent Characters are far and away the best podcast on 40k out there. They stay relatively on topic, don't try to one up each other to be the biggest "personality" on the show, and are very professional. I also enjoy World's End Radio, but I only play 40k so a good deal of the show doesn't apply to me, as it also covers Warmachine/Hordes, Dystopian Wars, or whatever.

Give Worlds End Radio a try. Its not only about 40K, but the podcast has a really nice flow and the guys hosting it are pretty easy to listen to.

11th company is still weekly and well worth a listen, albeit some of Pat's interviews have varying levels of sound/interest. Having Alan (Blackmoor) and 2-3 others on the main studio chats certainly had allowed discussions to develop and is a nice improvement.

Overlords is a good UK podcast. Fortnightly now but they do stick to the timetable pretty well. Less competitive but still a 40k focused podcast. Sometimes the last sections get a little too fluffy for my liking though.

40KUk was good, but only one podcast since May so need to see if they ever get their routine sorted again.

Will check out Independent Characters after recommendations on here.

11th company is weekly, and the only one I never miss.
After that it's The Independent Characters. Awesome dicussion though not always on topics that interest me.
Imperial Voxcast hold a special place for me. Nice guys, good tactics discussion. Lately something has been missing though: DAWSON.

I'd reccommend Turn 8, Ohiohammer, world's end radio, The Overlords and the Independant Characters. These are all fairly laid back and informative.

Well worth a listen.

I spend many hours each day driving so I have tried quite a few. In addition to the previously mentioned IC's, Screaming Heretics, 11th company. I would add Preferred Enemies and Heroic 28's.

Can heartily recommend the D6 Generation.

Not really a 40K podcast, but it's very well put together and reminds you there is a lot more to the hobby than GW.

I downloaded the D6 Generation app to look at since my podcast has the option of launching an app. I gave a few episodes a listen and thought it was pretty interesting.

I couldn't make suggestions without first suggesting the HittingOn3s Podcast, which I co-host (http://www.hittingon3s.com). We are definitely explicit and crude, but people find us entertaining and funny, so mission accomplished. We are 40k focused, but we do sometimes talk about more involved board games and RPGs.

I suggest you check out Big Mek's Garage (http://itunes.bigmek.net), a podcast about the hobby side of things (terrain, converting, etc). It's done by a local guy here in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. It's a shorter one. I like that it's focus is the hobby side. It's PG to PG13.

As others have pointed out, the 11th Company (http://www.tangtwo.com/11thcompany/) is a good one. They put timestamps for their segments so that you can skip around as needed. I actually need to be better about doing this for our podcast.

The Heroic 28s (http://theheroic28s.blogspot.com) are some local guys here in the DFW area that are involved in the local gaming community.

Skull Bros Awesome (http://www.skullbrosawesome.com) is another relatively new podcast that started around the same that we started ours. They tend to focus on Fantasy more than 40k. I like the podcast because I prefer the casual, "buddy" type podcasts that's more like a conversation between friends than a technical breakdown of the Xs and Os of 40k.

http://www.noobhammer.com is another podcast that was pretty helpful to us when we started up. It's not really my cup of tea, but they are pretty cool guys. You could give it a whirl and you may end up liking it.

Podcasts are definitely subjective. Popular podcasts can simply miss the mark with some people and smaller, obscure podcasts are absolutely beloved. While I always suggest people check mine out, there are people that don't like it because of in-jokes from previous episodes, the whole "buddy" style thing, or are turned off by our brand of humor.

That's the nice thing about 40k podcasts, if you find one you don't like, you don't have to listen. There are a ton out there, some more technical and strategically minded than others. Almost every podcast has something that draws people to keep listening.
