Gotta say, I'm quite looking forward to some more escapades aboard the crimson short one.

However, I think there's going to be a bit of a continuity shock, mainly due to the fact that the old dwarf episodes had some really amazing 'improvised' special effects due to low budgets, whereas this one will probably be CGI heavy and won't have that 'we did this entire set for a fiver' aesthetic that I feel is quite fundamental to the whole Red Dwarf appeal

From what Ive read, they sticking with sets and models. The actual ship is still a model for one. There are a bunch of clips and pics popping up; check em out!

Does anyone know of they have brought the canned laughter back? It's weird, but it really made a huge difference to the 'back to the future' mini series a couple years back.

Just finished watching the first episode now, its like a good friend you haven't seen in years. At first it feels alittle odd but soon your back to how you used to be with each other

Just watched it myself. It was great! Took a few mins to get warmed up, but once it did the boys were hitting like the classics again!!!! That end confession bit....Rimmer at new all time lows of douchbaggery.

Bit creaky in parts, but solid enough overall.

The meeting old friends is a fine analogy. Did trigger an instant smile just hearing the theme music.

Watched it last night, thought it was really good, but felt it lacked something from the originals, but it was enjoyable and they haven't lost the true spirit of the show or characters. I particularly like how they 'aged' kryten to keep him consistent with the actual effects of aging that all the other showed.

It did seem a little hammy in places, and the other hologram was a fairly poorly done character in my opinion, but otherwise it was a very nostalgic and well done half hour of entertainment.

I would definitely say so, however I liked Series 8. 6-7 I wasnt a fan of, with every episode being nothing but insults and metaphors in the Starbug cockpit. I would land this around series 4-5.

It was better than I thought it was, though it leave some questions (ie first humans outside of the Dwarf they've seen, and yet no one appeared to hit upon this revelation). It did imply humanit wasn't as screwed as was implied too (and presumably still up and running), so twas confused.

Yeah I got that too but since I had missed much of series 8 & 9 just went with it and enjoyed it thoroughly. The big bonus of it being on Dave is that they will repeat the gak out of it and I can take a closer look as I was playing zombicide at the time and was not paying too much attention.

All in all a good first step, the spoiler for next episode while not welcomed does hint at more good stuff to follow.

I miss the full theme tune and Holly though.

...I mean to say the other hologram was from a ship of humans. Admitedly they were now dead, but he said they could easily go and get their ship fixed. It was implied that there was still civilisation out there, at least to me.

Perhaps an oversight by the new writers. (Seeing as the purpose of Red Dwarf, at least in the movie, was as a ship escaping the destruction of the human race. The furthest one out, and the last one left. =P).

^^ The crew hasn't met anyone who has knowledge of Earth or humanity from after they left, at least reference it.

The Red Dwarf was a mining ship from Jupiter, at one point Lister got put into statis for several months.. but during that time Rimmer screwed up fixing something and caused the death of everyone on board via a radiation leak, so the ship drifted until it was safe for Holly (where is Holly anyway?) to revive Lister after the radiation finally died down a 3 million years later.

Its not so much that the Human Race is dead for sure, more that they have no way of contacting Earth and its likely that whatever is there is no longer what Lister is. Much in the same way that a house cat is now Humaniod.

A while back they were trying for a movie. The premise would have been the ship returning to Earth finally. Humanity had to flee due to it being wiped out by the Simulants (or was it aliens?), with everybody jumping on whatever could be found. Red Dwarf was the ship that made it the furthest away, and was presumably the only one that escaped.

Ok, so that was just the draft of the plot, and it doesn't totally fit in with some things. =P

Anyhow, yeah, Holly aught to have returned, at least from a narrative point of view. Maybe the actor didn't want to do it (then why not just change them...?)

Also, why hasn't anyone even bothered to resolve the events of the final episode of series eight? I mean what happened to the rest of the crew (the original ending had Rimmer telling to smeg off and abandoning in space, but come on, why not just say that...)? Okay, so x amount of years have passed, and that's probably pales in comparison to the weird stuff that's happened since, but at least reference it...

They're still in space, millions of light years from earth, after all this time. Ok, have the casual attitude, but I just don't buy that everyone's secure with that idea. =/ Gimme a scene with Dave gazing off into space forlornly and humming the theme tune before Rimmer comes over and tells him to get back to work or something. They tried it with Back to Earth, but it'd be nice for them to just show how past it and worn out the characters are instead of making them act like they're still the age they were during series eight.

At the end of series 8 Holly tells Rimmer that while he was searching for the cure, the rest of the Dwarfers jumped into the mirror universe.

So from a continuity standpoint, I'm guessing we have switched universes and they just switched on Rimmer's hologram in the mirror one.

Continuity isnt required in Red Dwarf. Remember the fly-by text at the beginning of Season 3? Or the FAQ videos with Kryten? They simply write off questions and pursue their new version of the storyline. So it doesnt matter at this point; accept its the same old crew, no mention of Kochanski (the crewmate anyway), and Holly is missing for whatever reason.

All I know is I hadn't laughed that much at a Red Dwarf episode in a while.

I hope for good things as the series continues.

Kochanski is written out of the continuity in th Back To Earth movie-series-thing, wont say how because of spoilers, no word on holly I'm afraid though

Wyrmalla, that is FAR too serious for Red Dwarf..

I always thought it was pretty clear that Dave was the only human still alive?

Anyway thought it was good! Really benefited from having Rimmer back in it again (who was keenly missed in the last couple of series) as the butt of so many of the jokes. Anyone know if it has both Grant & Naylor writing it now (as didn't one of them leave for 7&8? again perhaps part of the reason they weren't as good).

Just caught up on last weeks episode, was awesome and a real return to form.

I loved all of it, the only thing that let it down, and it didn't even really do that, it's just me being a fussy a-hole, is that the camera quality is actually too good, I miss my poor camera quality boys from the dwarf.

Haha yes right, a lot of the charm of the older series was the really crappy special effects which actually made it a lot funnier (slow motion explosions, the shape-shifting thing etc.)

I'm delighted with the quality of it though, that episode was just like Red Dwarf should be, I thought it'd be more like 'Back to Earth' but to me it felt like a good old episode and I hope the rest follow that same formula.

You don't need to work to continue living, I mean you could go all off-grid and live in the forest and survive on berries, nuts and small defenceless mammals, but then you wouldn't be able to see the crimson short one either...

I'll be missing it too, but it's on Dave, they repeat things more than a politician in an argument he has no hope of winning, and secondly there is a website called tvcatchup.com (or something like that, can someone else grab a linky-poo for me, in work so it's blocked) that basically streams freeview channels over the 'net, think iPlayer but for everything on freeview...
