Apparently, unlike 40k, you are more restricted into painting your models a certain way in Hordes. Of course, they're your models, but apparently you're looked down upon if you paint your Skorne, say, fluorescent green?
I see that the warbeasts for Circle are usually brown. Would it be ok if I painted some with grey fur, for the sake of variety?

You can paint your models however you want. There are no absolutely no rules regarding paint jobs so long as things like Fur, Metal, Leather, Skin etc.. all look different from each other.
Feel free to go with Hot Pink & Purple for you beasts if you want.

That might just be your local scene. Most people don't care.
Just like in other games.

I have a pink LoE army with tan skin. No-one gives a damn, don't worry.
Well, one person does. But he's got pink Trolls, and he just likes to think I stole his idea.

... People actually complain about stuff like this?
Wow, sounds like people need to chill out a little.
When in doubt, paint your models ridiculous colours and proceed to stomp anyone who complains into the ground in games and watch them complain even more.

Now thats what I want to hear. Usually how I go with painting if I have a specific list that I don't normally change then I paint it to fit how I feel the caster. Like if I did a Moshar army I would get the worldwyrds green color to be a tanish brown.

I think Skorne in bright green armor would look awesome. But that's just me.
My Circle warbeasts are all painted in various greys. I stuck to the studio scheme for armor, but did what I felt like with the skin. I do what I want.

My cygnar are largely brown as they've grown out of my magnus stuff for mercs.. which incidently are brown and don't follow the green studio stuff anyway.
I've also gone up against Pink Khador too... that was... different.
Myself? I'd be more likely to grumble that a force wasn't painted before painted differently or badly.

Just last month in No Quarter 43 they had a painting tutorial for a Skorne Animantarax with green Malachite armour. Beautiful effect, and I'd love to see a full army painted like that.

Well, look at the most recent NQ battle report. Green Trolls with purplepants and red skinned "devil" circle.
Sounds like the people you talked to are just very opininated and need to chill out.
For myself. I have purple and gold Cygnar, Green and grey Cryx and brown and red Menoth. If I get around to painting my Khador they will be black for the jacks and olive green for the troops. All with red trim.

Agreed, I've seen some really bad paint jobs and some whacky color schemes but hey thats how they like it. Personally I like my frosty iron and Purple fire Cryx and Black and light blue Menoth

Nope, how you paint is irrelevant and not covered in the rules. CONVERSIONS, however, ARE very strict and clearly outlined in the rules.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

My circle, what bits I got painted at least, sticks to the green cloth theme, but has black wrought metal armor and the wolves are all painted like the various wild canines. You can get a lot of variety out of just natural paint schemes that way.
So paint awesome things awesomely! To hell with the "official" paint jobs if you can do something more interesting!

Paint your models however you want. The only reason so many people stick to the studio scheme is because PP only shows one scheme in the army books. If you take a look at No Quarter magazine or the PP forums, you'll find plenty of examples of models painted in alternate schemes.

I have a desert-themed paint job on my circle: everyone is tanned, bone stuff is sun bleached, lots of sand weathering. My beasts are all painted as desert animals (coyotes, jackals, and my griffon is a vulture with a pink head instead of a brown hood). I have white and bronze armor with red and blue cloth bits. If I can paint America/Desert Circle and stroll around proud as hell at events, then surely you can do your own weird scheme and not let the haters get to you.
