I cant Make this stuff up.
Truancy was bad at my school, But this is mess up.
Weeks after Northside Independent School District in San Antonio rolled out its new "smart" IDs that tracks students' geographic locations, the community is still at odds with the program.
The "Student Locator Project," which is slated to eventually reach 112 Texas schools and close to 100,000 students, is in trial stages in two Northside district schools. In an effort to reduce truancy, the district has issued new student IDs with an embedded radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip that tracks the location of a student at all times.
The program officially launched October 1 at John Jay High School and Anson Jones Middle School. Without the badges -- required to be worn around the neck -- students cannot access common areas like the cafeteria or library, and cannot purchase tickets to extracurricular activities. WND reports that the district has threatened to suspend, fine or involuntarily transfer students who fail to comply and officials have noted that "there will be consequences for refusal to wear an ID card as we begin to move forward with full implementation."
Parents and students from the schools spoke out against the project last month. But now, WND is reporting that schools are taking the restrictions one step further.
John Jay High School sophomore Andrea Hernandez refuses to use the new IDs, citing religious beliefs and instead sticking with her old badge from previous years, calling the tracking devices the "mark of the beast." She tells Salon that the new badges make her uncomfortable and are an invasion of her privacy.
But to add to her restricted school grounds access, the teen says she was barred from voting for homecoming king and queen.
"I had a teacher tell me I would not be allowed to vote because I did not have the proper voter ID," she told WND. "I had my old student ID card which they originally told us would be good for the entire four years we were in school. He said I needed the new ID with the chip in order to vote."
If successful, the tracking program could save the district as much as $175,000 lost daily to low attendance figures, which in part determine school funding. Higher attendance could lead to more state funding in the neighborhood of $1.7 million. A statement on the school district's website lays out the program's goals: to increase student safety and security, increase attendance and offer a multi-purpose "smart" student ID card that streamlines grounds access and purchasing power.
While uncommon, RFID chips are not new to school IDs, according to Wired. Schools in Houston launched a monitoring program as early as 2004, and a federally funded preschool in California started placing RFID chips in children's clothes two years ago. Numerous districts have also considered similar programs, but without making them mandatory.
In California, the Anaheim Union High School District is also in the midst of testing a GPS tracking program. From Salon:
Each school day, the delinquent students get an automated "wake-up" phone call reminding them that they need to get to school on time. In addition, five times a day they are required to enter a code that tracks their locations: as they leave for school, when they arrive at school, at lunchtime, when they leave school and at 8pm. These students are also assigned an adult "coach" who calls them at least three times a week to see how they are doing and help them find effective ways to make sure they get to school.

Why does the title say "implanting" if there is no big needles being inserted into small children?
Unless there is a "mark of the beast" involved I am disappointed.

If what the article says is true, they won't even need high attendance; anyone who doesn't turn up could be fined for it, so the school gets money no matter what happens.

Right... and that fine... I don't think that's legal.

Not in this fashion...
Where do you draw the line?
If you can't get the kids to acknowlege that going to school is important... then, forcing them to isn't going to help (the ones that will not go to school). Sure, some kids hate going to school, but they realize that it's "important" in one way or another.
SO... yes, this is an attempt to FORCE attendence in order to keep their attendance high, thus ensuring their "attendance based revenue" from state/federal fundings.
The real conversation we should be having is whether or not these "attendance based revenue" streams for schools is a good idea.
So, if this rfid doesn't work... would they put dog collars on the kids? (waaaaaait... that ain't half a bad idea... )

Great. Next time I need to track something and I run the RFID freq in search and a kid pops up I'm going to blame him/her the reason why the cargo is delayed to my higher ups (Actually it'll be on a local net and not on the a national net.)

Honestly, if a kid doesn't like school enough to skip, they won't be any better sitting in a class they hate. Hell, they might just end up distracting everyone else because of it.
Why not focus on understanding why these students on skipping classes, rather than strong-arming them into just being there?

There's a line in the article stating that students could possibly be transferred... Where? to a school that doesn't do something as, odd? as this?
One problem is, what to do about the students who are on early release? When I was a junior and senior, I had enough credits and was on course for many more than I needed, so I was allowed to take shortened days (by not taking a last class of the day)

Imput the RFID freq into the tracker the pertinent info would show up. Pretty sure in the description box they might imput early or work release.

Not sure on civilian RFID tags. I know the military pretty much boot proof...as in you can walk it into the gravel...drive over it....throw it against the wall..its pretty durable. Its how we recover our cargo when jingle trucks get hijacked by the insurgents. Its compatible with Blue Force Tracker.
EDIT
Any of you with a CAC Card try to access it you need to FAX a request in to the program security manager along with your BDE Commander Signature.

Could you... hold on here.... NOT wear the student ID when not on school grounds?
How does this cut down on people being absent?
Just call in sick, leave your card at home and go to the movies or whatever else kids are doing these days.

LOL they don't need donations. Though I have been debating on buying shares in corperation. New version to come out next year with a three year implementation plan. Its an insane plan but doable. It enhances everything and I mean everything. More user friendly.

It'll only work if your buddy has the same schedule as you. Also I'm sure there be a visual verification by the teacher for class attendence.
Edit
RFID Tracker can get your position within a feet. So if two RFID tags are sharing the same space then the gigs up.

Everyone in a responsible position should do a visual confirmation. Its the back up system...the "Eyeball" system. Also the tracker will flag a tag for possible "it fell off" onto another cargo. If two RFID tag are sharing the same space then the flag will show. Means you can go to your TCN to track your cargo.

That begs the question "If they are just going to take roll call anyway why have all this fancy tracking gak in the student ID cards? What is the fething point of them!?!"
If they do away with rollcall then I suggest simply placeing your textbook on your buddys desk with his ID card under the front cover.
