Well they are played more than any other army so there is lots of models, painting tutorials, guides etc.

I would say so. A lot of options, and they are very forgiving as far as tactical blunders go.
Edit: However, key to enjoying 40k is not what is good but what you like. If you do not like regular SM but you enjoy a Xenos race the most, than go that. Ultimately your fluff/lore interest will translate the best into a fun overall hobby experience.

I would ask your friends if you could see their hard copies. Games Workshop also has a bit of detail on their website that you could use as well. There are even tacticas on websites such as this if you are interested in playing styles. However, no one on this forum can help you to attain pirated materials. That is strictly against the terms of service. You should not ask for them.

Moving to 40k Discussions, you might get more bites.
Regarding your topic, yes Space Marines are a good first army and a good mainstay army to always have on hand (They receive the most updates, are the easiest to use as Counts As to make your army play different, etc.)

One of the many armies GW has for 40k. You might consider browsing the GW website for some of the more basic information. http://search.games-workshop.com/search/keywords-codexs--locale-us--res_per_page-100
Find some people that play 40k, borrow their books and read them.

The Black Templars are a chapter (organization) of Space Marines. They have their own distinct codex from that of standard Marines.
Space Marines are good for a new player, yes, so long as you are interested in them. They are well rounded, easily expanded into the other Chapter codexi, and receive a disproportionate amount of attention from Games Workshop. This means you will never run into situations where you are waiting for ten years for a new codex (Dark Eldar being a prime, if not extreme, example of this). That said, you will often find yourself at a slight disadvantage against the newer Space Marine books. They have a tendency to be Space Marine "specialists"/Space Marines +1.
At the moment I think that the best starter armies for those that want a good chance at winning off the bat are Grey Knights and Necrons. They tend to have a lot of "auto-choose" choices and do not require as much thinking.
Other than Necrons I would suggest shying away from Xenos races if you are worried about the learning curve. They tend to be at a serious disadvantage against Marines when not wielded by a skilled and/or knowledgeable player and often have the oldest and most out dated books, Black Templars aside.

Depends on the area I suppose, some probably have it the other way around but out of the three 40k usually leads. Space Marines almost seem as if they were specifically designed to be the starter army at times, usually quite often.
They're well rounded and forgiving; not the best at anything but not the worst either.

Space Marines are a pretty forgiving army, yes, and tend to be easy to use. They also come with a lot of variants that have interchangeable parts, making kitbashing and conversions very easy to get started with (converting anything in an Eldar army basically requires extensive green stuff sculpting, but Space Marines tend to require trading a few parts between kits). They're also easy to paint well, with plenty of wide flat spaces, few organic parts, and a wide range of decals.
So yes, Space Marines are basically the ideal beginner army. Don't follow my path, I started with Eldar and didn't win a game for years.

If you have a GW store near by I would go there. They always have a copy you can look at on hand and the staff will even sit down and go thought it with you (if their not busy busy) to help you understand what everything means in the book ect... Also if your brand new they do what's called an Intro activity where you play a small game and even paint a model.

Ok, so if you have nobody around you that plays and no local FLGS, why on earth are you trying to get into it?
If you just want to paint, buy models and paint them.
Playing the game is pretty pointless if you have nobody to play with.

Ok, you could have explained that a long time ago. That you'll have people to play with and teach you in the future. Communication is important.

Space Marines are a good starting army.
I'd pick up the codex and read through it. Look at the Games Workshop website and see what models appeal to you.
For a new player, I'd ask them What would be fun to paint and model? What would be fun to play?
Take your time, do some research, and you'll find the right army.

Any color you want, but it's best to paint them all the same. You can invent your own chapter or use one of the chapters in existence. Also, if you want to play a non-vanilla army its best to get that army's codex rather than using the vanilla rules. By the way, since you didn't know what Black Templars were, look into them. They have their own codex and are the most awesome chapter in my opinion.

They are honorable, not merciful, love close combat, disregard the codex astartes, and hate witches (no librarians). They also have a cool color scheme which is easy to paint. These things appeal to me.
