Hello

I play space wolves and I have long wanted to field vindicator(s). I love their rules but hate the models, I hate all marine boxes. My plan thus is to buy a mauler fiend and make it look like a machine wolf with demolisher cannon on his back.

So Dear forum
How would you feel towards facing such a model in friendly games and competition tournaments? What would make you wanna play against it? I.e. Anything you think I should really take into consideration with the prox to make it work?

Friendly games? Sure.

Tournaments? Not so sure. How different is the LOS profile (Maulerfiend is much taller) etc so on.

You want to try to keep the profile as close as possible.

I think a better 'machine wolf' is a conversion using Bloodcrushers and dreadnought bodies. There's one around here somewhere that you can see that looks pretty ace and maintains the right size.

Hmm. There is a price for my vote of confidence, sir... I expect pictures upon completion.

As long as you make it look like a giant evil Thunderwolf and explain clearly before the game it's actually a Vindicator, I would be fine with playing an opponent who brings such a model. In fact I'd probably slow the game down for 5 minutes as I commented on how cool it looks.

Seconded. It has different sizes too and so cover saves would be weird. I don't think I'd make a fuss because I'm not that kind of person, but if there was a shot that I don't believe a normal Vindicator could make, I would call you out on it.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

The trick with this is going to be making the model look cool, and not giving it any benefits from the larger size. Remember the Vindi Cannon is located only like 1/2" off the ground. Typical rule with conversions, it's ok to benefit your opponent however you should never allow yourself to benefit.

Ok so it needs to be smaller or att least lower. I thought the nr one thing would be that it would be hard to determine front vs side armour.

Tournament player, here. No one gives a toot if it's larger. Just don't try to claim a cover save as if it was smaller. I use a custom Fateweaver that dwarfs the actual model, but I make no arguments about Los.

Make it took bad ass and you'll be just fine! In fact, I'm going to steal this idea, now. Thank you!

It would matter as to where the Cannon is placed.

Worst case - model a wall at the front of the base, with an oil drum lent against it and measure LoS to the barrel, and cover off the wall?

But if you pull it off, it'll look pretty good.

Is it bigger than a vindi? You could place it on a base that matches the vindis hull shape to determine frt/side armor.

I'd say any advantages and disadvantages from size are a wash.

Yes, the cannon has greater LoS, but the "Vindicator" can't get cover as easily as it could before.

Cannon 1/2" off the ground?
I know how to model that, but it might not be safe for work.

Ok, so i will have the cannon from under the wolf or from the mouth or somewhere were we have the cannon in the right hight. Then i think i could do some clear X-marking on the base to divide the base into 4 areas like the picture showing front side and rear armour for tanks in BRB. And the key in game will have to be generous in giving side armour hits.

Sounds like a good plan! We'll definitely need pics once you get it done.

For Armor facings, instead of putting it on the oval base that comes with the model, you could put it on a rectangular base that matches the dimensions of a Rhino chassis.
