My friend has two RT era dreds. If they were mine I would convert them to contemptor pattern dreads as there are similarities in design.

If you had a RT ere dred would you paint it as is or convert to make look less cartoony?

I'd chuck it in the bin.

Never! Those things are vintage. While they might be funny looking, that's the way they should be. If I had a mint box, I wouldn't even open it.

Forever a pone.

Just leave it. They're a cool snapshot of where the game started off.

They're similar, but Contemptors have a variety of weapons already, some of which the RT era dreads already have. Even so, some of the RT weapons are so warped and fugly that they could count as just about anything. I think converting them could be cool, but they'd have to be converted with vintage parts or scratchbuilt parts of a similar styling. I'm a purist, what can I say!

The difference being?

But seriously, I'd try to keep it sealed in box if possible. I certainly wouldn't convert it into something that's as easily available as a Contemptor.

As mentioned the weapons tend to be a bit goofy, so I might convert them to the cleaner modern versions, but thats about it. I wouldnt want to ruin the overall look, I like the retro stuff. If I can ever afford it Id love to have the FW retro Land Raider and round turret Predator.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch

Open to other games too

I have a round turret predator and 2 RT rhinos. I cherish them, I love the attention they get and I love explaining to the whippersnappers that these tanks are older than they are lol. (Showing my age again lol)

You play Warmachine, pls go

@ OP, keep them as they are man! Those things are freaking awesome. People who think they are cartoonish are typically the same people who have a hardon for 9 foot tall Space Marines with a head the size of a pea. That being said they are a little bit smaller, however a scenic base will bring them up to size. As a bonus they will look even more badass. :3

It depends. If he's willing to put in a lot of time and effort to make something truly amazing then convert away. But if not, don't destroy something that (is becoming) rare.

I have about 8 of them. Two I'm converting into more modern-style Contemptors, two I'm going to try to update in design (especially the legs, my god do they look awful) and the rest I've stripped and are just going in the bits box. I don't like them vanilla, but I've seen them done up with a good paintjob and they look great

I STILL use (well, up until I stopped playing 40k) my RT dreads AS dreads. Only had one issue (from an under 16 yo player whom I wasn't playing) so their opinion was irrelevant (I don't play under 16s as rule.).

They ARE the longer leg versions (not stumpies), and just have a mod to take the current weapon arms. They stand the same height as GW's current walking outhouse, so LOS shenanigans are not an issue).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Ultimately my buddy will get to make the call. I'm just waiting for him to read thru th codexes and figure of which army he wants to turn all his second edition marines and models into. Even if he lets me convert one I will be excited. There is definatly potential in the model. It just has awkward legs and face.

I don't like the stumpy legs and the face has always looked a bit goofy and under-detailed. therefore I think you can do a erally good and sympathetic conversion that takes into account the original design idea as well as a better and more modern aesthetic. Go forth and do wonders!

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I have two RT-era Dreadnoughts.
These models have low detail level compared to todays miniatures, the molding itself is not really good. But I love them.

I assembled them, though I have no idea if the arms I gave them are the correct ones. And painted with a more current standard they look pretty good to me.
So I would change the weapons maybe, so it's possible to play them, but that's it.

If he lets me my main areas of focus will be he legs, face and weapons. And maybe bulk the model up a bit with a generator/smoke stack on the back.
