So a buddy and I have both been pretty interested in getting into Space Wolves and recently he's bought a battleforce and a wolf pack. He's going to run two rune priests, some grey hunters with wolfguard to lead them ,wolf scouts and drop one of his units of grey hunter in drop pods. While I know this kind of "core" army is really good with Space Wolves, it just strikes me as exceedingly boring to model and paint, so I threw together a 1000 pt. list that seemed like it would be more amusing. I know ahead of time this isn't the BEST set-up up for an army, but what do you think, dakka? Is it even a functional army?
SPACE WOLF LIST: 997/1000 pts.
Rune Priest (Runic weapon, regular power armour, fury of the wolf spirits and divination, wolftooth necklace)
Grey Hunters x9 (flamer x1)
drop pod
Wolf Lord (thunderwolf mount, runic armor, storm shield, frost blade, wolftooth necklace)
Thunderwolf Cavalry x3 (Storm shield x3, melta bombs x2, thunder hammer x1)
Wolf Guard Terminators x4 (just stormbolters and power weapons)
grey hunters x5
The idea is so storm the cavalry across the board, drop the 9 grey hunters and rune priest in on turn 1 in a drop pod, and deep strike the termies in. And the 5 grey hunters will just have to walk I guess, I put them in there purely to abide by the FOC.
So I know ahead of time this army will be bad at holding objectives, but what do you guys think, could I really use this thing in any capacity?

Space Wolf terminators cannot deep strike so that won't work.
In smaller games I haven't had too much luck with the cavalry, they tend to take all of the shots until they are dead. even with the shields, there is a certain quality in quantity.
Try facing a Dark Eldar player throwing 24 twin linked shots, all poisoned. You end up dropping very fast.
I like to take groups of long fangs instead. Also throwing your Wolf Lord out in front is begging for first blood and kill the warlord points.
Just my two cents.

You've got a lot of points tied up in HQ choices, and at such a low point Army List its probably not the wisest idea. I'd pick either a RP or a WL (or at 1k points, a WGBL instead) and just run one of them.
You cannot split your powers on your Rune Priest - you must take two powers from the SW codex, and then if you wish to roll on the WH40k RB psychic power tables, you must sacrifice those powers to roll for new ones. From what I understand, only the new CSM codex allows for rolls from Codex psychic powers as well as powers from the BRB.
A lone drop pod is almost never a good idea, unless its for delivering a MM Dreadnought on a suicide mission (which is still generally not a good idea). Those 9 GH and RP are probably going to land, shoot a few guys, and then die to massed volleys of return fire and a charge, most likely giving your opponent First Blood on their turn 1 (especially if they're smart and pop that drop pod)
Space Wolf terminators cannot deep strike, as per a line in the codex that says that they consider such tactics "cowardly." You will find that the entry for Terminator Armor in the SW codex will not list the Deep Strike USR. Sadly, WG Terminators aren't that great when compared with C:SM Terminator Squads and Terminator Assault Squads considering points cost and wargear - you could would probably get better use out of them as pack leaders for GH squads.
I understand wanting to run more of a "unique" list than your friend, so keep with the theme of your list, just try to streamline some points here and there:
Run a WGBL instead of the Lord, take a Wolf Claw instead of a frost blade, ditch the necklace.
Keep the TWC, lose a few shields, run a power fist and 1 meltabomb
Get a few GH squads and maybe some WG to lead them.
Make sure your army can handle multiple threats - Terminators, Flyers, Hordes, Vehicles, etc.

As the friend in question, it saddens me that you think my army is boring.
Also, apologies for missing the rather major bit of information that SW termies can't DS. That seems silly to me, considering there's nothing cowardly about getting close enough to your enemy so that you can punch him to death with your wolf-fists.

SW termies can't DS? Then unless I want to run a 2000 point list so I can put them in vehicles, I can't use them? BUT THE MODELS ARE SO PRETTY. D:
Bah. Alright. Thanks for the input, everyone!

I faced a SW army with a wolf lord and cav last year at adepticon and that unit completely ate our lunch. Can be overwhelming at low point values when your opponents options for dealing with it are limited.

This is a non-functional army.
You have 5 men to sit on a home objective who will easily be shot off the table when your opponent gets a moment to breathe.
The other scoring unit is in his face so again, will be shot off the table very fast.
It looks like an army with a clear target priority so won't be too effective. The single drop pod means if you don't go first, your opponent can start putting dents in things he wouldn't even have to worry about until turn 2. If it does arrive, they're probably going to be dead by the end of the turn.
There's no anti-tank there, you'd struggle against mech.
Oh final point you can't take codex powers and BRB powers, all from one source.

Steadfast Grey Hunter

i dunno about a wolf lord on TWC mount at 1000pnts but just to try it, so
TWC 280 pts
then your wolf lord is about 230pts, thats
510 pnts gone.
so
10 grey hunters with 2xmeltgun standard MOTW, is 180, maybe take two
10 grey hunters with 2xmeltgun standard MOTW , 180 again thats 360 pts + 510 =870, then you want terminators but id recomend ong fangs instead.
5 x Long fangs, 4x missle launchers
15pts spare
so to sumarise a doable list at 1000pts for what you roughly want is.
HQ
wolf lord TWC etc 230pts
Fast attack
3xTWC 280pts
Troops
10xGH +180
10XGH +180
Heavey support
5xLF 115
Thats a not all together wacky list
