Was it pre-1.6? That version ( IIRC) screwed up the SMP code pretty hard. Not sure exactly why, but before that patch, the dakka server was pretty stable.
It could be the nether.
Jumping in and out of the nether creates a lot of chunk updates and loading new sections of the map a lot more frequently and more quickly. This equals hard drive thrashing and more memory usage. If something trips up during that it can then lead to lag, a hang or a crash. Most of our crashes and hangs occur when someone logs on (chunks loading) or goes into the nether (more chunks loading).
I'm not saying we should all stop using the nether, because it works just fine most of the time, but it's a reasonable explanation for why 1.5 was more stable.

I have to agree with Lego and Dark about the mods, at least until Notch's aforementioned modding support, and only then if the server is stable.
I don't currently see the need for any mods (except maybe the one mentioned a few pages back that allows the quick rebuilding of griefed or lost projects instead of having to rollback), and i'm reluctant to mod my own copy of MC just so I can play on the server.
Not to sound like a downer or anything, but everything seems pretty fine without mods at the moment.

My point was that it all seems to work. Pistons work, doors work, portals work (most of the time)... nothing really requires a mod to fix it per se, all they do is improve content (something which is subjective, and since we're dealing with lots of players, might cause disagreements) and add new content (which again, might not please everyone).
Right now, we're all seeing the same thing, and if people don't like it, then that's tough because it's vanilla minecraft; that's Notch's problem, not ours. If we get mods and people don't like it, however, it then becomes our problem, since we chose to change things. People who previously played on the server might see the mods as a step backwards, or just in the wrong direction, and it's unfair to force people to play an optional version when the original version was fine,
It's like having an expansion pack for a game that doesn't allow you to play the original any more.

Very well put and my sentiments exactly. I may even steal this to add to the FAQ ;-)
What you also have to consider with MODs which introduce new block types like "Better Than Wolves" , is this:
"How do we remove the mod if we don't like/want it anymore or if it stops being updated?"
You'd (well *I* would) have to go through the entire world looking for any use of the mod blocks and removing them all manually, because without the mod, the world save is corrupt. And you just know someone will have used a mod block at x:1204 z:-2376 AND way down deep underground at y:6.

Actually the fix I have seen is to set the old block ID's to planted crops, reload the server and admin run around to update the chunks and the offending blocks will uproot themselves and turn into seeds or whatever, when they are all uprooted you can convert/remove the mod.
however this was on a smaller server and im not sure how block updating works so that may be unrealistic.
really i would focus on mods like extra mobs (horses and such) and biome generation additions that dont interfere with things but make things cooler

Ah, that's better than what I was expecting, but still a very tedious process. Have you ever crafted and tried to fully fill out a map? A map only covers one section of the world too, the Dakka world in total is very, very, very large.

No, but I think the admin might have done a modification of some sort to load more chunks than usual, the server was locked for like an hour and it was done.
anyways, i was just transporting materials to the palace and the server went down.. *fingers crossed*

Palace front gates are going up very quickly!
If anyone visits the castle please stop by the far right hand tower of the gatehouse, make some planks and refresh the furnaces with stone, I'll need about 200 stacks to complete this project so refreshing the furnaces will help me quite a bit

I ran back to where I died to find my items laying around on the floor but for reason I don't undersand I was unable to pick them up so an inventory reset to 19:10 gmt would be greatly appriciated dark Remember kids, if your laptop can't propperly run minecraft don't try to play minecraft. EDIT: Is the server down?

Hi guys,
I'm planning on getting Minecraft, but I'm really bad at creating levels on LBP. This is mainly because I give up halfway through due to frustration from things not doing what I want, or do a half-arsed job to get around it.
Basically, what I want to know is,
-How long does it usually take to create a simple house on Minecraft?
-How simple is it to construct things?
Thanks.

Could take about 5 minutes to make an extremely basic house, then gets longer depending on how complicated you want it due to materials and design.
It's as simple as have the block selected and right click to place it. Not really much more to the basics.

Pistons and creating fire take a while because you need iron for them. Generally depends on how long it takes you to find iron ore and smelt it.
Pistons take longer though due to also needing Redstone dust to craft.

Some people get frustrated with having to gather resources in Minecraft, this is the real part that takes time. However, you can play the old Classic mode for free here, where you have unlimited items, but none of the new items like Pistons etc.
Try the Classic mode to see how long it takes to build a house for you and if you think it's ok then try moving up to the Minecraft Beta.
