Dakkites,

I'm looking for some thoughts and advice. The picture above shows my very WIP of a Mk3 Iron Armour Large Scale (approx 12cms tall) I'm sculpting using milliput. His helmet and shoulder pads are finished, but I would like your opinion on what weapons he should be armed with. I have already made large versions of Bolters (2 different types), a Bolt Pistol, Chain Axe, Chain Sword, Frag Grenades and Melta Bombs.

The GW version is armed with a Plasma Pistol and Chain Sword - I don't know whether to follow suit or go with different weaponary?

I see the Mk3 armour as being best suited for boarding actions - but what weapons should he have? Should he have some form of shield to protect him when boarding another ship or not?

Any thoughts on weaponary would be appreciated.

Regards, Phil

I didn't think SM's used shotguns?

Snrub wrote:Chainsword and shield.

He'll eventually be painted in my usual Chapter colours - Legion of the Dead (basically Legion of the Damned, black with skulls and flames). See my signature for some completed models. I much prefer the sculpting/creating/converting side of the hobby than the actual painting

I think I'm going to go with a boarding/assault shield in his left hand (similar to the FW version) but I'm still undecided on the right arm - would he go in armed with a sword or a pistol?

What do others think?

I've already made a Mk6 holding a Boltgun, a Mk5 holding a Boltgun and Chain Axe, a Mk7 kneeling and armed with a Plasma Cannon, a Mk7/Mk8 armed with a Boltgun (finished painting him), 2 Mk7's armed with a Bolt Pistol and Chainsword (1 running and 1 kneeling) and a running Mk7 armed with a DoubleHanded Chain Axe - See my blog for more shots.

I'm in the process of making a Mk4 and also want to make a Mk2 as well.

Regards, Phil.

Space Marine scouts can use shotties. Regular marines can't.

I'd go with a plasma pistol or little hand flamer for his right hand.

I'm sure they can, and under certain circumstances would use shotguns. There is just no game-legal option in the Codex army lists.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Also the fact that in combat, when a weapon is needed one will take whatever is available. Another point is that fluff tends to allow things that game rules dont.

So if a shotgun is what is wanted, then by all means make it so.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

From a real life point of view, I can see why a shotgun would be appropriate when storming a building etc, but I've decided to sculpt a Hand Flamer to be held in his right hand and a shield in his left. I plan to add grenades and a Chainsword attached to his waist for when the promethium is used up.

I've made some progress on the back of the legs and will take a photo after the milliput is dry and I have sanded it smooth.

This is awesome, looking forward to seeing more!

If its not too late to suggest, you could always look at the Forgeworld boarding weapons for inspiration

I've made some progress on the Large Scale Mk3 Iron Armour Space Marine:

All the black dots are where I'll add some 0.050" rivets from tichytraingroup when I can get some new super glue. I don't know what's happened to the brush on my current super glue, but it now resembles a kids paint brush!!!!

I need to add some power cables to attach the top of the chest to the bottom of the helmet. You can see to the left of the photo the progress I've made on the Hand Flamer. I've just got the basic box shape - I'll start adding more detail when a new batch of milliput arrives in the post!!

You can just see in the top right hand corner the start of an old variant of the Plasma Pistol to be used on the next sculpt.

Here's a close up of the front view.

This shows what I've done with his back. Again, lots of rivets will need to be added here. I've just created a mini mould of the right power cable on his right calf to have an exact copy on his left. I'll add some Zinge Industries power cables to join the front armour to his backpack.

Just a taster of my next project - a Mk4 Maximus Armour Large Scale Space Marine. For more, have a look on my blog in the signature below.

Any comments/critiques welcome.

Regards, Phil.

Lots of patience and milliput! Make the basic shape of what you want. Let the milliput set rock hard. Add a thinner finishing layer. Lots of sanding, cutting, razor sawing later, you get a final piece. Make a mould to save time for next time.

By doing lots of different parts/versions at the same time, I've always got something to get on with whilst the milliput is drying.

I want to make all the different variants in Large Scale. I'm about 70% done on the Mk3, 80% done on the Mk4, Mk5, 6 and 7 are completed and I want to start making a Mk2 Crusade Armour as soon as I can.

Progress on my Mk3 Iron Armour Large Scale Space Marine:

As you can see, I've added all the rivets (front and back) on the helmet, body, legs and shoulder pads. I'm still in the process of making his arms and weapons - I'll take some shots when I've made a bit more progress. Please excuse the Mk4 GW SM to the right of this shot - It's purely to show scale.

Here's a close up of the helmet and chest. I've decided not to add a large Imperial Eagle on his chest as per the original GW model. As far as I can remember, only 1 Legion was allowed (Emperor's Children?) to display an Imperial Eagle before the Horus Heresy and as I don't know what era I will be painting this model in, I'll refrain from modelling this icon!

I thought I'd show you the WIP on a Mk4 Maximus Armour. I just need to smooth the join between the chest and groin area and to add 2 small skulls onto the Knee pads and this part will be finished for me to take a mould for future builds.

Till next time, Regards Phil.

Another update:

I've decided to change the weapons he will be carrying - I'm keeping the Boarding/Storm Shield, but am going to go with a Power Mace in his right hand. The mace will be based on the GW Black Templar. I think it has a very medieval feel to it!

I've just received a FW Mk3 Backpack and want to copy it as best I can in this scale. This will probably take a number of days as I have lots of things going on in my "real life" - Son's football training, Boss's leaving party, School Governors meeting and a Manager job interview. I probably won't have any spare time till next weekend to complete this model.

Here's a quick shot of another Large Scale I'm in the process of making - A Chaplain! As you can see, he has a partially rebuilt skull from a previous war!

If you want to see any more, have a look at my blog.

Regards, Phil

Update time:

I decided after spending many hours making a maul that using a converted GK Dreadknight Hammer looked really cool. My WIP Mk3 Backpack can be seen in the top right hand corner.

Here's a side shot. I used 2 GK Dreadknight hammers to make this.

Here's a shot of the WIP backpack with the FW version I'm using as a template. I used a mould of a Lego cone to make the exhaust vents!

Here's a shot to show the inside of the vents.

Just to show an update of the Chaplain I posted last time:

I'm really happy with how this has turned out (lots of skulls!!!). I need to sand and smooth out the flames on his right shoulder pad and to add a rosarius around his neck (attached by a chain) for this to be finished.

And finally, the next Large Scale I'm moving onto:

I used a mould of Mk4 Maximus Armour legs and started to make Mk2 Crusade Armour. The left leg is partially finished (need to add rivets and power cables). It's involved a LOT of sanding to cut the armour plates to get to this stage!

Any questions welcomed. Regards, Phil.

Update time!

Finally finished the Mk3 Iron Armour Large Scale Space Marine:

This shot shows what I did to the side of the back pack.

This shows the whole of his back pack. I seem to be keeping tichytrain group in business with all these rivets!!

Just a few shots of another backpack I've started - A Mk2 Crusade Armour Jump Pack:

Critiques welcome/expected.

Regards, Phil.

The FFG RPGs (at least, Black Crusade, not sure about others) have "Astartes shotguns" as an option, so presumably they're used in some situations...

Large Scale Space Marine Update

Apologies for the Threadomancy but I thought you would like to see some progress I've made recently. I've completed all of the airbrushed flames and then tidied up the overspray with some VMA Black. I now have 4 sets of legs ready (1 running, 2 standing and 1 kneeling) for my next set of models. You can see the Mk5 Heresy Armour in the bottom left and the Plasma Cannon gunner in the bottom right.

and finally.... my current paint station!!!

As you can see, I like to have a number of projects on the go. Working from the top left and working clockwise:

MK3 Iron Armour Large Scale SM
SM Stalker cannon
Large Scale SM Bolter and Chainswords
Contemptor Dreadnought Assault Cannons
MK6 Corvus Large Scale SM
Plasma Cannon Back Pack for the Large Scale SM
Plasma Cannon

Comments and critiques welcome as usual.

Regards, Phil.
