Unlike MtG and similar there aren't really any purposefully created 'rare' models. There are some that are hard to come by.
Some of the older (1st-3rd ed) models are getting very hard to find for a decent price these days, and there are the Gamesday models that you could only really get at the event.
I think there was a space marine sarge model you could only get if you ordered over a certain amount from GW as a free gift, but i could be wrong

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

The marines above are great examples of miniatures that are fairly collectible and uncommon.
Mostly anything that is metal and OOP is going to be "uncommon" and somewhat collectible and many of them are downright rare. However, some of the older figs are styled a bit differently than current models, so you will have to judge the suitability for your particular army/collection.
You can see alot of these models at the "Collecting Citadel Miniatures" Wiki. Almost all of these models are OOP.
SM Transition models Collectors guide
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Space_Marine_Transition_Collectors_Guide
SM Chapter Collector's Guide.
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Space_Marine_Chapters_Collectors_Guide
The only way to find these models will probably be specific requests here or on Bartertown or Ebay.
Also, looking through the older Citadel catalogs at "Stuff of Legends" will show alot of old, uncommon, and rare models.
http://www.solegends.com/citadel/index.htm
Best of luck in your search. I really like older/odd/unusual marine models and think they are a great way to make a force that is a bit different from everyone else's.

That captain is often pictured as a BT model, but has no actual BT heraldry on the model itself. I got him from a flea market a while ago and he was just listed as "birthday marine" on the top of the blister. Also, Captain Draco has the ugliest bolter I've ever seen on a GW model.

Neither does Draco, On those links above however both Draco and the Captain were released in the "Heroes of the Imperium" box set and both are painted with BT heraldry. So they can be whatever you want, but seems GW intended them as BT.

Draco has the chapter symbol on his left shoulder pad. I recently picked up a Draco model for 6 quid, which I was quite pleased with.

That was the limited edition Captain from the 3rd Edition starter box. I had like 4 of those. His bolter was extra bulky and often snapped off at the wrist.

Love that model but ouch! Be prepared to pay upwards of $50-60 for him. Darn cool model though, and would make a great centerpiece for a LotD army. Best of luck!

Yeah thats the one down side to him is he can be pricey one of my plans is to buy an already painted on or damaged one, then use green stuff and a very steady hand to see if i can repair him to the best of my abilities

Draco wasn't in the Heroes box. The Birthday Marine (also sold as the limited edition mini with the starter set, but then later released for general sale in a blister alongside the regular 4th edition Captain from the metal Command Squad box) was, but the other BT in that box was the 25th Anniversary Emperor's Champion model.

I got both of those limited edition BT marines for about $15 a pop. You guys missed the LE emperor's champion with both hands holding the sword in front of him. Got him for $6 last year.

Don't despair just yet. Part of the fun of collecting can be hunting down a fig at a price you can afford. Almost any fig is available nearly instantly available if you're willing to plunk down big bucks, but by the same token, almost every fig will appear at a lower price if you scour the Dakka Classifieds, Bartertown, local conventions, swap meets, etc.
I've never paid more than 10 bucks for a used marine and nearly all my metal marines have been 1-3 bucks. Yet I've acquired quite a few long OOP RT figs, characters, etc.
Of course you have to enjoy the hunt and be patient....

Some of the OOP Necromunda stuff the original Orlocks, Goliaths and Redemptionists are becoming collectable.
But 2 really limited ones come to mind.
Sgt Centurius of the Legion of the Damned was a limited edition just for the opening of GWs 100th store. He had 2nd edition special character rules.
There was a set of Adeptus Mechanicus who were only available if you turned in 100 'Skullz' stickers and you had to spend $10 at a GW store to get one Skullz so do the math...
As it happens I have both...

Probably the "rarest"/most valuable model that I'm aware of at this stage is the Iron Hands Iron-Father (note the pictured model is a conversion and it normally has a servo-arm backpack instead of a jump pack):
The last time I saw one of these on eBay, it was selling for over 100 USD.

Don't care much for Sgt. Cenurius, but I'm insanely jealous of your acquisition of the Adeptus Mechanicus Skulz promotional. I was just looking at a picture of them in the back of an old WD a couple of days ago. I've got a couple of RT era AdMech figs that are similar, but there arne quite a few in that set that are completely different from any other AdMech figs GW has made!

Not sure why... They were a regular release model, and didn't sell particularly well when they were available straight off the shelf.

Underlined for emphasis.
I think you answered it yourself. If it didn't sell well and is now oop, sometimes that all it takes.
Kind of like the Lionel girls train from the 50's. It was the same as the boy's, but in pastels. Sold horribly, but is now one of the most valuable Lionel sets because there are so few available.

I love the storm shield/thunder hammer marine model. In my mind it will forever be the warrior that Xarl headbutted to death in the most epic dual I've ever read in a BL novel.

I knew the SGT. Centurius miniature was in particular boxed set, I found one en-route back to Tennessee from GD Chi-Town. I purchased the army box set, traded most of the models and figures for stuff I needed, and I still have him in the blister pack. Now that I have the new LOTD I may finally break him out and use him someway or another. Automatically Appended Next Post: Yikes, I resurrected the dead...
