Subject: Idea: Scale Comparison Tool

One thing that I constantly see on forums when new miniatures come out is asking how they compare to other miniatures in existence. Occasionally someone lucky enough to have both models in question will upload them in a forum thread to be dug up from time to time. "How tall are Dust Warfare figures compared to Imperial Guard?"
I think as a community, we can do it better.
I propose a small tool, where users can upload pictures for scale comparisons.
These pictures would be encouraged to be in a particular format: A model, standing as upright as possible, placed next to a ruler with markings in millimetres and optionally inches. The more rigidly defined the format, the better: require a certain distance from the model, begin the ruler at the base of the model's feet...
Users uploading the pictures would be able to tag it with what kind of model and from which company.
The tool would then consist of two drop-down boxes (or similar selection method) which would correspond to the two model types in question. Once two models have been chosen, their images would display side-by-side.
Then, someone coming to Dakka could ask a simple question to the tool "What would my Mantic Corporation minis look like against Infinity figures?" and get a quick, accurate and helpful result, without relying on any single person to have the (perhaps obscure) combination of models.
Does this sound like something that DakkaDakka could or should do?

Quite a good idea. I think that a combination of forum thread and articles would do it, but someone would have to spearhead it and come up with the formats, etc to make it work. Could be quite interesting if it gained critical mass.

Fixture of Dakka

My thought is to make a graphic of several nested circles/squares scaled to the various base sizes, all with a single line running through to the outside. That way you you place the base on the circle, its always centered then, and you have a line to place a ruler. Would make things very standardized.

yeah, While a ruler is the obvious choice. I like the idea of coming up a with a dakka printable pdf that has scale markings on the floor and place to place a ruler Although people like a quicker solution. something they can just plop next to their mini, Like ForgeWorld compares everything to the terrified villager model. Maybe dakka could come up with a stock model/item that everyone photographs things next to. Where is he from anyway might be funny to pick one up for using in my blogs... Panic...

I believe he comes in the Giant box, which might explain why nobody knows where he's from.
I think a tactical marine might be a better universal choice for scale comparison. Or just use both.
