I'm building a 6' by 4' board for me and my friends, I know how to make the actual board, however I lack any knowledge of making terrain. I haven't been able to find any tutorials for good looking trees, and I don't want to buy $30 GW ones. Ideas would be appreciated.

Model Railroad trees are what I use, far cheaper and come in a variety of sizes..I usually get the biggest ones I can find.
http://www.hobbylinc.com/model_railroad_trees
then take 4-6 trees and a irregular (kidney shaped or such) base cut from mdf or plastic-card, glue the trees on the base with some room between them for models ( I use trees with detatchable bases so I can remove the trunks in required)
Add any other ground clutter you like or just flock and static grass the base and you have a area terrain with trees, make 6-7 and you have a forest.
Hope this helps.

Go find trees at a model railway store.
'S where I get mine from. $100 trees for $50 (AUD - less elsewhere) in a bag, heights range from 2" to 5" - it's essentially a forest in a bag.
Got 4 bags for a games store like this. Kept them in trees for a while - and I think they still have a bag and a half left.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
