I am tinkering with my ever changing chaos army. I am looking at the Warpsmith and wondering if people have had much success with him. While I initially blew him off, after re-looking at the codex again, he is better than I thought:

2 attacks base, but bolt pistol and power axe = +1 A, mechatendrils +2 more attacks, so 5 STR 6 AP 2 attacks base? (Missed this on the first pass)
Meltagun and flamer from the tendrils (totally missed that the first go around as well)
Shattering defenses seems meh, but may have its uses.
Fixing vehicles on a 4+, OK might come in handy.
Cursing vehicles..... kinda chaosy. I like it.
2+ armor save.... but no invul.

By no means am I using him as my main HQ, but I am toying with taking one to see how he does. While I have looked at the stats / abilities on paper, I was just wondering if anyone has actually tried him out in a game before dismissing him.

I've seen one curse a LR punisher, 20 Gets Hot! rolls was pretty hilarious. The LR glanced itself to death. Other than that I think the other options are better.

Had a storm raven cursed, forgot about it and died while firing hurricane bolters at rapid fire range, plus heavy bolters and assault cannon, oops

Fixing vehicles is best if he's in a land raider. If you have an army that can deal quickly with anything that might threaten your armor 14 (and have a decent bubble wrap around it first turn against deepstriking nastyness and drop pod nastyness), then you have a decent chance of just being able to drive around the rest of the game repairing your hull points and laughing. A lot of people in the meta are bringing less melta/lascannons and are spamming missiles/autocannons.

I wasn't sure if his machine curse was BS5 or BS1 against flyers but that could be an option.

Put him in with plague marines to get fearless while adding additional special weapons and assault punch.

Or just put him next to a quad gun or Icarus.

It rolls to hit so its a snap shot against flyers, luckly for him he got a 6.

He's actually pretty beast in combat.

Just put him in a squad with another champ who can take challenges from powerfist types (who ignore the Warpsmith's amazing armor) and then only take challenges from power-sword, power-maul, etc types.

Then LOL as you get a billion rolls on the boons table from challenging power-sword Sergeants with a guy with six power-axe attacks on the charge and a 2+ armor save.

I like to take him with AODG and MoT, MoK, or MoN. Then stick him with termi's, split him off before assaulting some unit so in the event that the opponent fails their morale test, the Warpsmith can sweep em.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

I haven't used one yet, however one of my regular opponents is a Grey Knights player who likes to combine his Vindicare with his Techmarine's 'Bolster Defences' ability for a 2+ cover save. I could see 'Shatter Defences' as being a nice counter to this, doubling your chances of each lascannon / missile launcher shot killing him before he takes out your land raider / vindicator / predator / defiler, etc.

I have been using one with some success manning my quad cannon with a unit of cultists. He has bs 5 which is lovely for blasting flyers. I just wish he was an elite choice tbh. Although its an auto include for me at the moment with my list

I used it and is fun to use is power again the ADL. But for my part he just look cool on the table because he have nothing if you compared him to a master of the forge. The warpsmith is like the codex CSM : more useless than usefull.

I know about the axe, still deciding whether to build one or go "counts as". It's an old Mk II fig that I converted 10 years ago & am just getting around to painting...didn't double check the Codex first...

The pose isn't really dynamic enough for an axe, IMHO.

There are a lot of other ways to take out that 2+ save. Burning brand, bale flamer, noise marines...

Indeed, it's the damage he does before you get there that's worrying. I also don't have noise marines or a Heldrake, and the burning brand won't be in range until at least turn 2.

Missile launchers and lascannon have the advantage they autokill him once they've got past the cover.

you could give him MoN to avoid ID, or realize he only has 2 wounds so ID isnt really a big problem so give him a 4++

I usually use him as btb with one or 2 defilers so he can attempt to heal them if they lose a hull point and slowly move them upfield, unless the enemy has a lot of missles, then I use the defilers 72" range and take them out. works decently so far.

I meant the Vindicare can be autokilled by lascannon & missile launchers

Very nice.
I dig the use of the old Mk2 marine figure. I was planning on using an old RT Techmarine figure (back when they had a skeletal hand on their shoulder pad) with the addition of a servo-arm as the base for my own Warpsmith, but now I may steal your idea!

BTW given the distinctive nature of the model there is no way that anyone who is halfway awake could confuse your miniature as being anything other than a Warpsmith. Therefore anyone that actually gives you grief about the model being armed with a sword rather than an axe is just being a jerk/punk/TFG/whatever.

Thanks, TrenchRaider, I appreciate your feedback. I did decide to keep the sword...

BTW the tendrils are made from florist's wire superglued into holes drilled into the "kidneys" of the CSM, then covered with short bits of 1/16" styrene tubing. MUCH easier than I thought it'd be! I have some old-school servitors that I would love to use with him, perhaps Cultists? I dunno, will peruse the Codex...

You know what makes great mechanical tendrils (Mechadendrils, if you will)?

Guitar wire.
