So while cracking on with my chaos army wanted to start expanding the nurgle aspect of it with the overall end effect of the colection showing a horde of different units united under a chaos lord. Started with some older warriors (process is is my army diary link, now mainly done over on cotec instead of here) but hit a bit of brick wall with rusting some areas of armour and the weapons. With limited funds can't go get some weathering power so relying on paints and washes/inks to get the effect done . Not looking too great think the last step of drybrushing the boltgun on it gave it still a too uncorroded look for nurgle, wondered if anyone had some tips along with pictures if possible. Anyone interested in the other stuff in the army so far, link is below

I painted some rust on my DV cultists:

I painted the weapons Boltgun Metal (Leadbelcher) then washed them with Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil. I then heavily drybrushed bright orange in a few areas, then highlighted the edges of the weapons with Mournfang Steel or whatever the bright metal color is.

Shall try another wash and drybrush session on a test halberd when I get time next few days then see if I can get it more obviously rusty. The subtle effect isn't bad for upcoming orcs weapons at least so something learned!

You can try stippling orange, brown and red on the weapons/area for a rust effect. It's what I did and, IMO, it turned out pretty good.

What I found works very well for metal:
prime black, drybrush 3 shades of grey, drybrush boltgun metal, drybrush chainmail, drybrush mithril. From here, give 2 washes of black ink, 1 of devlan mud after they're dry. While it's wet, sprinkle with salt. & let dry, brush off salt, wash with gryphonne sepia, sprinkle with salt, let dry, brush salt off, drybrush with a maroon, matte varnish.

Here is how I do rust for my nurgle army.

1. Start by painting the metal a darker silver.
2. Pain the areas you want to look rusted dark brown.
3. Use a 1:1 ratio of dark brown and bright orange in splotches covering most but not all of the dark brown areas.
4. Put small splotches of bright orange throughout the rusted area.
5. Highlight the edges with a bright silver.
6. Wash with a brown and/or a dark green

This isn't the best rust I have painted but this is the best picture of rust I have taken (PS at this point I was not yet highlighting with the light silver.)

I will second this idea. A stencil brush (or similar stiff bristle brush) used for stippling works very well for rust. After painting your metal parts normally, start stippling with a dark brown followed by a orangish brown, dark orange and then finally a bit of orange.

Thanks the advice will play with some of the ideas and see which work well for me with how long I want to spend on getting the end result on painting a regiment a time and some characters. Really enjoyed reading the tutorial too.

I find that basecoat with bg metal, Drybrush with Jokearo orange and a Seraphim Sepia wash works nicely!
