Alright, enough political babble, let's have some happier OT forum topics!...starting tomorrow
I have made it my job to bring musical discussions to the Dakka OT forum, and I'll start with this, it's rather simple: what's your favorite sad song? I'll start:
Not your typical sad song, but the desperation and false hope apparent in this one really show through. So what's yours Dakka?

May the the blessings of His Grace the Emperor tumble down upon you like a golden fog. (Only a VERY select few will get this reference. And it's not from 40k. )
It really depends on your definition of a "Sad Song".
I can name a few that seem upbeat until you listen to the words...
Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!
Office of Naval Intelligence Research discovers 3 out of 4 sailors make up 75% of U.S. Navy.
"Madness is like gravity... All you need is a little push."
How You Gonna See Me Now - Alice Cooper.
Expresses the fears that a lot of military feel when coming home. Based on an actual letter he sent to his wife.

Always gets me, would say it's my favourite 'sad' song, it's mellow, it's a little creepy, and (I know it's all about the interpretation) but I can relate with the themes of the song.
And that is why you hear people yelling FOR THE EMPEROR rather than FOR LOGICAL AND QUANTIFIABLE BASED DECISIONS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE MAJORITY!

Partly because it is a beautiful piece of music and partly for what it means to a whole generation. Discribed as "Americas music of Morning" It will forever be bound up with one moment and everything that happened after that. Those that know what I mean will understand, those that don't probably never will...

Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud
About your doubts and fears
And what's more no-one ever disappears
You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door.
/sigh

Strangely enough i find Smashmouth's "Walkin' on the Sun" to be a sad song.
If you listen to the lyrics, it sings about an age where people actually got along until fashion and wanting to be cool ruined it. It also sings of how some people held onto that age's original meaning just to be ridiculed.
A few lyrics that people manage to not hear in the song:
"It ain't no joke when a mama's handkerchief is soaked
With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked
The bond is broke up so choke up and focus on the close up
Mr. Wizard can't perform no godlike hocus-pocus."
"And their kids were hippie chicks all hypocrites
Because fashion is smashin' the true meaning of it"
Another sad song I really like is "What is Truth" by Johnny cash. It is sad because everything he sings about in it is disparagingly true.
Honourable mention:
"Vermillion Part 2" by Slipknot
Spoiler:
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

"You need not fear us, unless you are a dark heart, a vile one who preys on the innocent; I promise, you can’t hide forever in the empty darkness, for we will hunt you down like the animals you are, and pull you into the very bowels of hell." Iron - Within Temptation
Famous Blue Raincoat - Leonard Cohen
My Country tis' - Buffie Sainte-Marie
Something I can never have - NiN

Komm Susser Tod. It's an upbeat, happy song...
And then you hear the lyrics and realise it's about suicide.
And that "Komm Susser Todd" is German for "Come, Sweet Death".
Also, Eri Kawai's rendition of "A Cruel Angel's Thesis". The song isn't actually sad, but her version of the song is hauntingly beautiful. Search "A Cruel Angel's Thesis A Cappella" on YouTube; it's the first search result.

I know few songs where the lyrics and sound match so seamlessly and are just so. effing. good.
Honourable mentions/runners-up.Most of these are probably either too old or too mainstream to be hip - but I'm too hip to care about that:
Queen - Teo Torriate
AkkaDakka - Ride On
Bruce Springsteen - The River
Dire Straits - Romeo and Juliet
Kyteman - Sorry (this one has no words!)
Robbie Williams - Advertising Space
