With the necron mega force coming out soon and now for advanced orders I was wondering what people thought of it for a new necron player? I haven been wanting to build a necron army this past year but haven't had a chance to yet, so would this be a good starter? I am not a fan of necron tomb blades and they give you quite a few in this pack, are they good? However I like everything else in the pack so its becoming a tough choice for me lol.

so what do you guys think?

tomb blades look fun, i just never really saw a use for them.

the biggest issue i have is the army is kinda loose. there is not a real theme behind it, just "here have a bunch of plastic kits" all in one. - its a decent savings on retail, but its really not that good as a stand alone army. - however if used to bolster an existing one, or grab a bunch of units to start a force i would say giver.

Honestly, the Necron MF is extremely sub-par. The Triarch Stalker is cool but mediocre, as are the Tomb Blades. The Spider and Scarabs are decent if you want to build around them, but generally suffer if you don't do so. You'll also need to buy a lot more scarab bases in order to effectively use the spider. The CCB/AB kit is amazing, and both options are strong, but its also not very expensive. The Warriors, Immortals and Ark are all good (you should assemble it as a Ghost Ark if you don't magnetize) but can be bought at an amazing discount in the form of the battleforce. While it is a great bargin if you plan on using most or all of the contents, You may just be better off getting the battleforce and a CCB/AB kit, which will give you an almost identical core (20 Warriors, 5 Immortals, 1 Ark, 5 Scarab Bases, 1 AB, 1 Foot Overlord) for at lot less (in CND, the Megaforce is about $300 and the Battleforce + CCB/AB is ~$180)

Tomb blades are decent, 6 5 small blast ain't bad. I like the stalker, it's not amazing but it's decent. I agree the battleforce is more focussed.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

The problem with Tomb Blades is twofold. The first is that they compete for slots with two extremely good unit (Scarabs and Wraiths) and one fairly good one (Destroyers). When you realize that the slots you spent on Tomb Blades could have instead been used to by Wraiths or Scarabs, it makes it a bit harder to purchase them. The second is that they don't address any problem that other units in the codex can't address for fewer points. If you arm them with Gauss Flayers and Tesla Carbines you are basically buying faster Immortals with a worse save and that don't score, and the Particle Beamer bumps them up to at least 30 points a model while not being particularly good (there is surprisingly little that S6 is very good against, and the fact that it has the AP of a bolter is the final nail in the coffin). I don't think that Tomb Blades are bad in of themselves, but when compared to the other options available it is extremely hard to justify taking them. Perhaps if they had access to some sort of melta-weapon, could take Gauss/Tesla cannons, or if the Partical Beamer had a better AP value.

Hey guys i am having a similar quandary. My friends and I are thinking of getting into Warhammer 40k and we are poor post-grad students looking to build armies for as little as possible. I myself am drawn to the Necrons, and I saw this "mega-force" release. Now above you mentioned getting the BF was a better deal for people to focus armies, but what about people like me who have no armies, would I benefit, or should I just go with the BF and buy an overlord?
thanks guys!

p.s are the other mega forces any good? Inquiring on behalf of my friends.

I may be a noob, but you sir are a noob hater!

The issue with the Necron battle force is that the selection of units that it offers are sub-par and unfocused. A large portion of the models included are mediocre, and many of the others have little in the way of synergy with the rest of the army. For example, the Spider and Scarabs are a good combo, but they don't work all that well with the Triarch Stalker or the Tomb Blades. If you are on a budget (I'm a student too, I know what its like), although the megaforce does offer a lot of savings on the models included, if half of the models end up on your shelf not being used, you are better off just buying individual kits (so in short, only buy the megaforce is you want almost everything in it.

Also, you are better off buying the Catacomb Command Barge/Annihilation Barge kit than buying the stand-alone Overlord. If you choose to do so, you can build the Barge kit as an Annihilation barge and also make a Overlord with a Warscythe, effectively giving you an HQ and a good Heavy Support choice for $45 CND.

They only are offering one other megaforce this year, for Space Marines. That megaforce is extremely attractive, as almost every kit included is very good, however, once again, I would only buy it if most of the contents appealed to you.

Regal Phantom has summed it up really well, it has to much of a variaty and you probably wont use all of it at once. I dont mind the tomb blades and will use them, but the triach stalker I would never use and only 1 spyder?

You could spend the same amount probably and get what you want rather than buy this for only half the stuff.

If I didn't have everything in multiples, I'd buy the Megaforce in an instant.

While some of the Choices in the box may not be the most competitive (The Triarch Stalker, for instance) It's still an excellent deal for anyone starting an Army OR expanding. It offers you base of I think, 30% off everything. If you can get an Online retailer for 20% more off, It is a Fantastic Deal.

Most of the Options are pretty Decent in it. The Ghost Ark is a pretty Decent Choice, and the Abarge is of course awesome. You've got nice amount of Warriors to start off, and you further bolster your troops with Immortals.

If not, you can always make them into Deathmarks. Of course, you'll need another kit to maximize either units effectiveness really.

A single spyder is odd, but they are still a pretty good choice for Heavy support. Smash Attacks, and being a cheap MC still works in their favor, and spawning scarabs is still a viable option. Of course, you'd need to expand on this option, to make realize it's full potential.

You've got the Barge kit, that comes with an Overlord (Your HQ choice) and can be made into an Annihilation Barge, which is a great Heavy support Choice.

I'm really surprised about all the hate on Tomb Blades. I've used them a few times in this edition, and while they are no Wraiths (Really though, what is?) They are still a good unit. In truth, I prefer them over Scarabs, and they are a lot cheaper than a Typical destroyer layout for me.

They are more than just "Fast Immortals" Not only are they Twin-linked base, with either Gauss or Tesla, but also T5 on Jetbikes. All for 3 more points than an Immortal. I'd say that's pretty good honestly. With the advent of Hullpoints, taking a squad of 5 with the Twin-linked Gauss blasters, and zooming around is not a bad choice at all. It's easy to get rear shots, and it is not hard at all to Glance Vehicles to death, thanks to the Gauss rule and twin-linked nature. Just keep them base, and cheap. A full squad is only 100 points then.

The only real outsider in this Megaforce, is the Triarch Stalker. It was a niche unit in 5th, and I feel its' really lost it's place in 6th.

All in all, if you are not going for Wraithwing or Flyer Spam, I think this is a great start, and a great addition to any Necron force. It provides the framework for many ways to expand your army, and right out of the box can form a pretty decent Army. You really do save a lot of cash on it, and as I said earlier, if you get an online retailer for 20% off, your saving just about 50% on everything, which is huge.

Discount Game Store isn't getting the megaforce in stock, but are doing a similar deal - the same items as the megaforce, for $US235. You can choose to swap some things, such as get rid of the triarch stalker for 3 wraiths.

Could you provide a link? If such a thing is available, I would want to look into that personally.

Their facebook announcement is here. I've bought from them a number of times in the past and they've always been great, especially for Aussies whom GW tries to shaft. They have a retail store, ebay store, a webstore, and do invoices via email.

Replace 6 the Tomb Blades with 6 Wraiths, the Stalker with a Doomscythe, and the Spyder with more Immortals, and you would have one hell of a great Megaforce.

But really, GW is trying ot get rid of models that don't sell as well, and this is the best way to do so...

Basically the swaps I had with my DGS necron megaforces. Swapped out some less useful stuff for wraiths, doomscythes and lychguard. Now to wait 3 weeks for it to arrive -_-

Good thing with the megaforce really is it offers a great expansion if you already own a 1-1.5k point Necron army. Than you already own your 6 wraiths scyth and most of the above mentioned options. That's me at least. Adding this to my existing force offers me all the second diversity options I wanted to get after the first stock of units. So a really great deal in this sense. But as many people already said it is not the best way to start the army.
To start I would suggest the normal battle force, an annihilation barge or 2 which also yields a nice foot lord, 2packs of wraith, a destroyer lord, few more immortals/death marks maybe and a scythe. That should be a well rounded 1.5k Necron force which will be good to win battles without screaming too loudly cheese.
Adding the megaforce really shows the strength of the codex IMO afterwards. You diversify your lists to some point without going to a gimped list. Since many armies would be quite happy with those unit choices.

SM Megaforce is decent, you'll get everything you need to get started and with a few more units you'll have a viable army. I'm less familiar with the two armies that have Fantasy army boxes now, but I think the Vampire Counts box is better than the Empire one since you get more Core units and don't have to go out and buy a gigantic army just to use the ones you've got.

If you're looking into Battleforces, Blood Angels, Dark Eldar, Eldar, Necrons, and Tau are quite good since you'll be using basically everything right off the bat, Space Marines, Chaos Marines, Chaos Daemons, Space Wolves, and Tyranids are less so since they don't include essential units or include units you won't use nearly as much.

The problem is that the battleforce gives you 1 where you'd need 2. 1 Stalker won't do anything, neither will 1 Doomsday Ark, neither will the 5 Immortals...I'd suggest having a look at ebay, you get a lot of cheap stuff.

I've bought the Megaforce.
I'm using it to expand an existing 3rd ed army.
I've been using stalkers extensively since I brought the 'crons out of stasis, and have found them to be excellent.
Everyone needs another Annihilation barge, (this will give me two) as they are probably the best anti air that we have.
Another 24 warriors can't hurt either.
the Immortals are to be assembled as Deathmarks (I've just built up a box of five so that will give me 10) who will probably go into a nightscythe.
I'm planning on using a large force of TB for HP stripping, so they'll come in handy, I had a couple of boxes on my shopping list anyway.

I ran the numbers on the MF, £216 worth of stuff for £150
That's quite a saving.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

I'm just getting into Necrons so I picked up the megaforce, battlebox, and three wraiths. Might sell the tomb blades and walker back to the store for other options, but I think it's an okay start to an army, and I'll be expanding slowly over the next few months.

Also, the Imperial Guard battleforce is, with some converting, an entire army in a box.

You can use a CCS, 2 Vet Squads, sprinkle the HWTs into your CCS and Vets and build a sentinel. Not a bad start (Its how I did ).
