Most expensive would either be a FW DKOK, FW Elysian drop troop army, or FW Horus Heresy Legion

Cheapest is any termiewing, or maybe like a a Vulkan list.

I think SoB cost more than Elysians. I have both an with SoB only being blisters now, I think it could make them more expensive.

Actually Orks are one of, if not the cheapest army ever, IF you move quickly.

This is due to AOBR sets of orks going for rediciloulously cheap on Ebay. Most people kept the SM half, so that went for a bit high, but slod the orks.

So you could get a sizable green tide for very little money. Up until recently the Kan Wall was one of the most effective and cheap lists you could do, cause Kans were cheap as well. Not any more, obviously, but ork still go for fairly cheap. However, now that Dark Vengence is out, orks are obviously going to become fairly expensive again.

Not nearly as expensive as IG though.

The cheapest one is probably Driagowing. You can still run a 15 model 1500 list, and have a chance of winning, though now it's much lower than before. GK up some AoBR terminators up for ultimate savings. You should have an army up with 100$ or less. Keep in mind they are not that great anymore, though still playable in causal settings.

The less transports you need the cheaper is the army.

I do not know about tyranids, I would put them in the mid. Any kind of terminator based army should be top: Logan Wing, Death Wing, Palladins.

Then low model count armies like SM and Necrons.

Horde armies wth transports should be on the bottom just above forge world anything.

Cheapest straight from GW is surely DraigoWing (or, indeed, most Grey Knight armies not involving Henchmen).

Most expensive Sisters of Battle.

A lot depends on how deep your bitz box is. If you ahve a good collection of bitz you don't need to buy special characters and other costy toys.

I would say someone with a deep bitz box could do a Henchman based GK army with just a box or two of Empire Militia.

Krieg! What a hole...

As far as I know, FW stuff is cheaper in Australia, to the point where a FW guard army will be cheaper than a GW one.

Forgeworld anything can make any army expensive, so just sticking to GW cheapest, draigo, most expensive Sisters, at 6$ a pop per battle sister and 14$ a pop per serephim.

I just made a legal ork list with 28 meganobz, Ghazghkull, Mega armored warboss and three battlewagons. Adding all that to the GW webstore, totaled £617. That's the most expensive I've built.

Tyranids are very expensive due to 3 things - the high pricing of monstrous creatures you are going to buy multiples of (3+ Tervigons isn't uncommon, and they're nearly as expensive as a Land Raider), the high pricing of elites you will buy multiples of (a brood of 3 Zoanthropes or Hive Guard is going to run you more than a Land Raider, and you'll usually have all 3 elite slots folled out with these), and the amount of Termagants you'll need in that 3+ Tervigon army (6+ boxes of Termagants might get you enough).

Sprinkle in other expensive kits like the Hive Tyrant, Tyrant Guard (again, 3 of these and a Hive Tyrant will run you 2 Land Raiders), Trygons... You've got one expensive army.

Not quite. Two pre heresy squads, the bolters for them, and the heavy weapon set that has the 2 missile launchers and 2 meltaguns, still costs more than 2 tactical squads and you don't get all of the extra bits. Not much more, but still more.

I would say most armies are pretty even, depends on build. Grey Knights probably have the cheapest, still fairly competitive builds.

Guard are definitely expensive as hell, almost no matter what you build. Orks, SoB, and Nids are expensive as well.

I've run that exact list .

It was awesome fun to run, though not too effective.

It got a lot of looks, as an ork army with less than 40 models will.

Plus folk aren't used to seeing that many meganobz on the field at once. Termies yeah, because those are cheaper than chips. Every SM -involved game seems to have them in it in plastic.

Meganobz are upwards of $20.00 each :(

A hellion spam Sathonyx army would also cost the earth (90 hellions won't come cheap at all...)

I'd rank Mech IG at the top of the price range.

3 Vendettas
2 Manticore
2 Hydra
3+Chimeras
Lotso Dudes
Lotso Special weapons
Maybe some allies

That said though Nids are freakin pricey too. 60-70$ per MC
Biovores around 40$

Unless you want a mech spam IG with forge world toys.

Logan Wing for Space Wolf is lower cost due to lower model count.

However... "cheap" warhammer armies?

Grey Knights (Draigowing, Terminator spam, Purifier spam, etc.)

Orks
Chaos Daemons
Eldar
Dark Eldar
Tyranids
Imperial Guard
Sister of Battle

*Based on certain armies having older codexes, or upgrades or etc. that causes their troops to be more expensive than others, therefore requiring less models to make an army.

Exactly as above, truer words have never been said. Converting is an addiction and when you can buy ANY model from Games Workshop's collection and make it your own orkiture, its painfully expensive.

But so worth it

30 Orks by Foot.
17-20 in a Battlewagon.
12 in a Trukk.

Most Expensive armys outright are the Imperial Guard and the Orks.

Mass armys. be they consisting of tanks, troops or whatever. they need many purchases to get to a good points level, without "over upgrading" your units to squeeze into a game.

heck. a Leman Russ is like 60+ bucks. a Valk? I forget how much it is. last one i bought (long time ago) was like 70. by now its probly 80 or more.

a single squad of ten guys is 30+
a solo sentinal is 30

its nuts.

Orks have the same problems.

Regiment: 91st Schrott Experimental Regiment
Regiment Planet: Schrott
Specialization: Salvaged, Heavily Modified, and/or Experimental Mechanized Units.

Imperial Guard and Orks (and probably Nids, not sure) run into the same problem that one box of anything wont do you well. i.e., for Orks, buying a box of anything but Nobs wouldnt be useful, like Stormboyz or Kommandoes or Lootas/Burnas. Nothing really works unless you have 15-20 of the greenskin buggers, so you'll usually end up buying the same box 3-4 times just to get one unit that'll last longer than a turn on the tabletop.

Like 300 bucks for pallies, a dreadnought, and draigo, and some other random gubbins to tie it together.

Eldar can be expensive if you run lots of vehicles or wraith guard. At $78 (for the canadian ones) for a box of 5 wraith guard, running a list with a couple of 10 man squads as an Iyanden army is gonna be $312 before tax (plus the cost of 2 warlocks) and that's only about 750 points worth of models, and it wouldn't even be a legal force until you spend another $20 or so for an HQ choice.
