Hi all,
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but, one of my other hobbies other than 40k is programming and I'm always looking for ideas to make things. It helps to hone my skills and I can learn new technologies. Having something to focus on also makes this a much better process and gets me using technologies in real-life scenarios. As such lately I've been thinking of what I could build to help others engaged in the 40k/wh/wargaming hobby. I know there are a lot of things already out there, but what do people think could be improved upon? I was thinking of building some kind of web-based app, so if anyone has any good ideas, leave a comment and I'll see if I can work on something that can benefit us. I should note that graphics aren't my strong point, but that can always be improved. Any ideas welcome!
Thanks
Tom

Keep in mind, GW doesn't want you to - and if you use what they consider to be their trademark or other properties...they may well attempt to shut whatever you are doing down.
You might consider very vague and abstract things which can be used with GW rules and products - but lacks any specific identifying materials unless you would like to draw a line in the sand and stand on principle.

Consider me not well versed on the ins and outs of programming, but more of these would be awesome.

Sean, it wouldn't have been anything that infringes upon their copyright and trademarks, more like useful tools, e.g something to help manage campaigns etc.

Something to keep track of model collections, maybe.
If it it could list variations the model can be used as, such as Rhino/Razorback, that'd be cool.
Add to that the status, such as assembled/table-ready/painted/pro-level.
Having a link to the official store page might be good, to check painting suggestions, or prices.
The fiddly programming bit would be to group models together for squads.
A SM model with chainsword and bolt pistol might be a Tactical sergeant, or an assault marine.
When there are enough models of the right type, the count of playable squads would go up.

If you're going to make a web based application, php and mysql are your friend.
However, if you decide to use a desktop application, let me recommend Real Studio. It's a powerful version of Basic that is cross-platform compatible - compile to Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. I use Real Studio Enterprise at work, and it's fantastic. You can get a freebie 30 day trial and the Personal version is only $99 and includes a full SQL deployment. www.realsoftware.com
I had thought of using it to make a cross platform program to help people keep track of their collections, las Skinnereal suggested, along with attaching images of units and any relevant info, but just haven't gotten around to it (jebus knows I need some organization for my thousands of toy soldiers)

Thanks for the suggestion Skinnereal I'll have a think. Judgedog, it would be a web app and I prob would lean towards php/mysql for now. I know I said coding is a hobby, but I also do it full time as well, mainly web and app programming so I'm not just someone starting out taking on too much!
