Subject: Storm Talon-good or bad?

Hi all,
I've been thinking of adding a storm talon to my white scars army but I can't decide if they are good are not. On the one hand, they have good fire power and weapon options but on the other hand they seem quite fragile with only AV 11 and 2 HP. Plus there's the mild annoyance of them having to go into reserves every game.
Has anyone had much experience using them? Are they worth taking? What weapon load-outs are best to use with them?
Thanks for the help.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Its a decent flier for taking out other fliers, but its not worth the points against anything that isnt a flier.

OK, thanks. My local meta doesn't really have any fliers so I might give it a miss for now.

whats the best option to go with though for taking out fliers? The TL-Lascannon is S 9 but its only one shot, the typhoon laucher is strength 8 and it has the ability to throw out frags as well for good versatility, and the skyfire one has great range and 3 shots, but its only S 7, and with the abundance (at least of im seeing) of AV12 air, it has only a 1/6 chance to pen.
so whats the best option to pair with the Assault Cannon forf knocking things out of the air?

I personally use my storm talons in an anti-tank role. This means I use the lascannon, which this the cheapest loadout btw.
So with assault cannon and lascannon, both twin linked, these guys are cheaper and more damaging than any predator could be.
The str 7 missiles are just plain stupid, while the typhoon launcher is decent, but if your flier is busy shooting small blasts, why did you bring it?
So stick with the lascannon. Kills fliers dead, and since the assault cannon rends, it hurts too and the flier can double for ground anti-tank as well as killing elite infantry and stuffs.

I've been thinking the same, but have decided not to for the simple reason I just can't bring myself to field a model that ugly

I think the lascannons are probalby the best at taking out enemy air and tanks, but go with the typhoon missile launcher if you want to dedicate one as anti infantry.

I prefer the skyhammer for both anti-air and anti-tank. Played around with the heavy bolter, but it wasn't very effective in any role. For the lascannon and TML I feel there are better choices for those weapons than the storm talon.

I haven't gotten any yet, but I'm planning to. From what I'm hearing, this is a unit that you have to take at least 2 of, preferably 3. Never 1. This unit works well only in multiples.
Is this true? Thoughts?

I think this is true for all flyers. They get exponentially better with more in the list.

I was planning on only getting one as my other fast attack slots are used up being white scars. I've been put off the idea now. I'd much rather get more land speeders or bikes now.

True but it seems that Storm Talons specifically are less effective that other fliers when taken as a single - at least this is what I am hearing. I may be wrong.

well while they do have nice firepower they are too easily killed off if you only take one.
still they are better than the DE flyers

This might be a vague question, but when you're fielding 2 or 3 talons, what's your target priority list? If you see an aegis, do you go after that? Are there other things that should be ringing bells to stay away from or destroy immediately?

Actually, not really - DE fliers can have Flickerfields. StormTalons evade.
