So, Secrets of the Third Reich was one of my all time favorite games.

Perfect setting - Weird War II.

Excellent Miniatures.

And the ability to use ANYTHING you wanted that was in scale - a treasure trove of vehicles, mechs, miniatures, etc.

Hell, it even had Captain America in it - sort of.

But it never really took of.

Which was a shame.

Well, now there's some news!

And first edition supported a custom mecha engine allowing you to use mecha from any line.

YES!

This is very good news - I have table's worth of WWII terrain I'm dying to use again!

Great news. The original had a brilliant concept and setting, but suffered from unimaginative design and a lack of true innovation. If they can compose a rules set that really captures the flavour of the Weird War (much as Dust has), then they could well be onto a winner.

I feel just the opposite!

I feel that DUST WARFARE promised us a 'table top wargame' and failed to deliver on that promise.

SoTR was clearly a wargame, and I suspect SoTR 2nd edition will continue to be one.

Now, I've not played DW, just read through the rules. What makes it not a wargame? SoTR is certainly a wargame, but very little in its mechanics distinguishes it from other, similar games. At the moment, for WW2 games, I favour Operation Squad as the best skirmish level game with a strong period feel, despite its limited scope.

Hey Alph, I prefer Dust Warfare to the dozens of other wargames I've played. How is it not a table top wargame?

Dust Warfare works well, but is a bit burdened by its reliance on using the exact same stats as the boardgame version.

I was okay with STR when I browsed it.

What's really interesting is that with Bolt Action starting to get popular and producing a really good set of WWII 28mm, along with the crazy stuff from other lines and DUST, this could be a perfect storm.

There's also the 28mm Gear Krieg stuff.

I might be a bit unfair in my evaluation of DUST WARFARE, but from what I've seen/read it does seem to use a lot of short hand board gamey elements still.

I love the models and the fluff, but it also seems VERY strict and limited in terms of what types of armies you can build too.

Agreed!

I recently moved into my new house, and came across all the boxes of WWII terrain and models I had bought in anticipation of being able to find or build an active SoTR Weird War II gaming group.

I'm hoping SoTR 2nd edition gives me the impetus to restart this project!

Eh, the armies seem limited at first, but the 3 platoon choices actually have a lot of flexibility going on. Play around with the Dust Warfare force builder and you'll see what I mean > http://dust.mainecoon.net/ . Plus, we can expect new platoon types in the future expansions.

Actually, many of the hardcore Dust Tactics fans were really annoyed by the stat changes made in the Warfare book. For one thing, lasers were weakened, and Rocket Punches become more powerful. Some units gained

I'd really like to try integrating some of the SoTR models into my Warfare forces. Some of them really are excellent, especially the occult/mad science Axis stuff.

Have you guys seen the AE-WW2 Kickstarter? I wish I could afford to get in on that.

Too late for me.

Sold all my SOTR stuff as the rules were dire.

Infact it was enough to put me off the genre for life...

Funny how opinions differ as I liked the rules.

Way better than AE-WWII for my money.

Biggest problem I had was the perceived lack of support/push/marketing from West Wind.

That's something I'd like to do as well. I recently picked up the SoTR books and am enjoying the background and keep contemplating trying to port things between the two systems. With AE-ww2 now funded, that will be joining the pile of things to fiddle with in my "spare" time. I have to get my Dust stuff painted first though...

I like the ideas in SoTR, but thought the rulebook presentation was awful. Hopefully they can lay it out with some better artwork in the next edition.

Hm. Talking of SoTR, I only just found the Westwind Facebook page that has loads of concept art and some new SoTR models, including a nice Russian mining vehicle-thing

There's also a thread about v2 on the westwind site. The book is going to be full colour, hardback and expand the forces out to include Imperial Japan and the USMC forces. They are holding off on releasing it until they have all the models ready to go with it, so currently the release is expected 2nd quarter 2013

Good idea there, as a lack of models (and a lack of pictures of many models they actually did have for sale!) was NOT helping SoTR 1E!

the game is great.

getting a batch of that board game stuff still with Ilsa She wolf, and the Von X family singers.

I have a platoon of the americans, and really love the game.

Best thing going for it was the zombie mass.

By and By, they sell starter sets for the game. they are awsomesauce with a side order of bad ass.

Incursion is a very good one as well. I really liked those tank suits Vs the zombies/ muties, then SNAFU put it out of the ballpark.

More people need to play this one.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I'm looking forward to the new edition as well.
I was in a gaming malaise earlier last year and found the SoTR stuff. I picked up both rulebooks and started work on some small US and German forces to use demonstrating the game to some friends, or going to an FLGS for demo work.

I have made slow progress on them, but intend to pick it back up with the new edition coming out. It doesn't hurt that I picked up an airbrush that I can use for the mecha I picked up for both sides Now I just need some APCs and tanks.

I was surprised it didn't pick up much attention before, but the lack of support and exposure really hurt it. Hopefully this time around they will market it better, especially using social media.

You can do quite a lot with the game, from straight up historical fights to really crazy Pulp/Horror games.

I am REALLY looking forward to SoTR 2E, and the big revitalized marketing push and availability.

Hopefully!

Too bad you're not local. I'm going to be converting my garage space into a Gaming Room as I unpack and clean up my new place, and I've slowly been collecting up a mix of 28mm WW1, WW2 from Warlord and WGF, Tannhauser, SotTR, Incursion, DUST and so forth, with the idea to mix them all together in a mess of awesome.

Here's hoping they do a rulebook only tier, doubt my bank can take it if they make a too attractive model tier as well on top of mechafront ;w;

I'm REALLY glad this one isn't until September/October because that should be just enough time for my hobby account to recover.

I love me some Weird War II - I'm worried how much this one might cost me!
