Hi
I'm new to 40k and trying to decide on my first army
I've narrowed it down to either space wolves or necrons , what are the strengths / weekneses of these two army's?
Is they such a thing as a beginner 500 point army list for each of these army's? Preferably based on the battle force for each army
Thanks

Wolves work at range and in melee, they have one of the best troop choices in the game and have great synergy allowing you to take the army you want and still have a great chance to win.
Their weakness is a lack of anti air in an edition thats steadily introducing more and more fliers.
Necrons are also really strong with lots of viable units in the codex that allow for multiple play styles, no real weaknesses to the army which is kind of the downside as alot of people consider them too strong in 6th ed.

Wolves are good if you like a diversity of models. You have devs, but also wolf guard and vehicles and drop pods and lone wolves and psykers. Lots of stuff.
Necron, on the other hand, have basically exactly two weapons (gauss weapons and tesla weapons), and more or less one way to play them - mech with fliers. The advantage, of course, is that they're a lot more straightforward, and have a certain purity to them.

Joking aside I would suggest Necrons purely for longevity. It's safe to say your not gona be getting a new codex for a very long time... and pups will start to age after the next few dex's (I think)

Well, in all honesty I would probably pick the one that you like the models for. Because nothing sucks more then being stuck wtih an army whose models you hate. Of the two, however, I would probably suggest Necrons inasmuch as I'm so sick of fighting against marines that I'm starting Orks BECAUSE i'm so sick of marines.

Necrons only work as flyer mech?
I assume you have not had the "pleasure" of facing multiple 20 warrior blocks backed by rezlords and arcs (who in turn are filler with even more warriors...they literally just walk up to you and blast you to narnia.
EDIT:
I managed to forget why I was posting x_x FAIL.
I would have to suggest SW, because necrons are just done to death, and honestly quite boring at the tabletop.

If you are wanting to do a lot of converting and want an army of unique and dynamic models the I would definitely go with wolves.
Necron models are usually a bit more plain and your average necron warrior isn't decorating his armour with tokens of his skill in battle.
Personally, I enjoy building storyline around different characters in my armies so I would go with SW.

Well. Your Space wolves are a more elite army, so they are going to be cheaper to get into then necrons.

Wolves are cheaper and easier to play than Necrons; Necrons can be pretty powerful, but they require a pretty thorough understanding of the rules and the available tricks to pull off correctly. They're both pretty easy to paint, though...
They're both decent beginner armies; I'd advise going with the Space Wolves, Necrons are fairly powerful now but once new books start coming out with easier and cheaper counters to flyerspam they're going to revert pretty quickly, Space Wolves don't rely on gimmicks that are easily FAQed out quite as much.

I like Necrons more than puppies.
Wraiths are my favorite unit in the game. Flyers are pretty cool, really strong. There's alot of flavor in Necrons, you just have to dig around the mundane netlists to get some.

I'd go with wolves, you can play many ways with the army and still crush people and have a blast. Necrons are like boring as all heck. Its wraiths and flyers with 2 weapons in the dex.

I'd say Necrons for a variety of reasons.
1) Easy as all get out to paint and look good.
2) Rules-wise, they are the most powerful by far. Don't believe the "only 2 weapons" nonsense. Gauss and Tesla weapons come in several different flavors, and even the most basic gauss weapon can kill a tank. Also, as a friend of mine has proven, you don't need to follow the standard flyer spam to field a good army.
3) Necrons are one of two armies that currently have rules that were written for 6th edition (even though the codex was released in the twilight of 5th).
4) Variety. Necrons have sooooo many different kinds of units its ridiculous. Even their basic troops are different. My Necron buddy has been playing them since 2nd edition, and he loves the new codex. He's never fielded the same army twice, and still has units he's never used.
My biggest issue with SW is that their most effective (and spammed) units directly contradict their fluff. Most Space Pup lists boil down to lots of Rune Priests (which completely flies in the face of their anti-psyker mentality) and Longfangs (which goes against their assault oriented background). Also, as a Space Marine player, I'm not a fan of painting row upon row of power armour models. It can get a bit boring, and you can't do a rush job like you can on Necrons and still get a good result.
The one disadvantage for Necrons is, their models are harder to put together IMO. Lots of small pieces that you have to hold in place for a while as the glue dries. Marine stuff goes together very easy (with the exception of the drop pods).

I play both but they fit my personality quite well. Which is probably why I think the best reason to play an army. You like the models and story/fluff behind the army.
If you like having a unrelenting army of zombie robots who are controlled by insane lords and mad scientists then necrons.
If you like Vikings, drinking feasting, heros and epic tales of outrageous bravery then I would go with space wolves.
Both armies are strong in the current edition. Necrons allow for a lot of different play styles, with many fun units. Spaces wolves are marines with a bit more flair and are very shooty. Playing an army just to win is a very dull reason to play an army but it is definitely nice to win and with either space wolves or necrons that is a very do able goal.

Speaking from the perspective of a guard player who has been crushed by both races, i think space wolfs. Necron's may be easy to paint and win with (with a good list), but are boring to play against, and i'm not a big fan of their fluff. Whereas space wolves are space barbarians, riding wolfs, who don't save people because of some dusty old tome, they do it simply for the sake of being heroic and awesome. To sum up, its either zombie robots, or Space barbarians riding wolfs. I recommend an aegis defense line with a quad gun for space wolves, due to their lack of AA, it will also provide a solid defense for any ranged units and your objectives to be placed behind.

"Archon Yulliptidon sat apon a throne made of polished glass, which gleamed with magnificence in the rays of the dying suns, beautifully suspended above the the many razor sharp peaks that where Commorragh. The archon held within his hands a a delicate pyramid of sculpted crystal, from which emitted a faint glow, an echo of the soundless screams of pain belonging to countless tortured souls forever trapped within. The room in which the archon sat in was something like a throne room, but displayed apon the walls where helm of every color, but all the same in size and shape. Some bore eagles on their foreheads, and others still contained the decapitated heads of their previous owners. Two huge, beautifully carved iron double doors, engraved with intricate runes of pain and suffering, opened at the far end of the room, to reveal a tall, elegant dark eldar warrior, clad in armor made from bone and flesh. "lord Yulliptidon, you asked for my presence?" Said the arrival, " to what do I owe the pleasure?". The archon raised his elongated head, skin as pale as a full moon, eyes as vivid as a horrible nightmare. " I did not ask for you, Thrayon, I ordered your presence. Do not think to much for your self, for truly, you are not much past a feral that one would find on the streets. As for why I have ordered you to my palace, it is because their is a task that I wish you to preform. I wish you and you kabal to cleanse the imperial out fort of Sargosain Gastienagan." Thrayon was both aghast and interested at what the archon had just said. "Such a task would stretch my kabal to its limits, only a great reward would be enough to do a deed like this." Yulliptidon was outraged by the the proposal of a "great reward" by Thrayon, but did not let his anger show, hiding it with a cold smile that hid his evil intentions surprisingly well. The archon was was famous for never telling a lie in his life, but was very fond of veiled double speak, and this was no exception. "Do not worry, Thrayon, you shall receive what you deserve." Thrayon, happy with this outcome, left to carry out Yulliptidons task. Little did he know what was coming. Thrayon had done a thousand evil deeds, and what he deserved was a horrible death equal to to all those he had caused. Yulliptidons smiled. He was going to have fun."

Eh? Only two weapons?
Necron Codex includes, Death Ray, Doomsday Cannon, Eternity Gate, Portal of Exile, Gauntlet of Fire, Gauss Blaster, Gauss Cannon, Gauss Flayer, Gauss Flux Arc, Heat Ray, Heavy Gauss Cannon, Particle Beamer, Particle Caster, Particle Shredder, Particle Whip, Rod of Covenant, Staff of Light, Staff of the Destroyer, Synaptic Disintegrator, Tachyon Arrow, Tesla Cannon, Tesla Carbine, Tesla Destructor and Transdimensional Beamer. (I count 24, of which 5 are flavours of Gauss weapon, 3 are Tesla and 4 are Particle weapons.)
Plus various CCW like Whip Coils, Warscythes and such, and I'm quite sure there'll be some unique / special weapons in unit entires / wargear that never seems to make it to the summary page as well.
Infact, it has 4 guns more than the 20 weapons in the Space Wolves book (of which 3 are just a Missile Launcher with different names).
At the end of the day, most Imperial armouries include a few variants of Bolters, Lasguns, Plasmaguns, Meltaguns, Flamers, Grenade Launchers and Missile Launchers, ranging from Pistol to Cannon and little else.
Which is the standard for most books: Standard infantry armament in Pistol / Rifle, a few Special Weapons in Pistol / Carbine / Heavy, a few guns for flavour and away you go.
There's a fair amount of flavour to the Necrons now (which I quite like, though I keep avoiding adding them to my list of armies-to-get), and my friend plays a few interesting lists with them.

In the end i went with the space wolves =)
Went to warhammer world on Saturday and picked up the battle force, I am slowly putting them together ! =)
I'd like to mention how friendly and helpful i found the staff, and how happy they where to put a problem right -
I found an arm on my grey hunter sprue ,which would not fit where i thought it was meant to go - and the staff confirmed it was a mist cast, and a got another full box of grey hunters, and allowed me to keep the old sprue (as far as i can tell everything else on the old sprue is fine)

GW is an exceptional company and they'll normally send you a replacement sprue/piece or sometimes kit if needed. Their customer satisfaction is through the roof and I think that plays a decent part in the prices of the mini's we see. Paying for a premium after all.

I do get the feeling that they are their to help, I have no issue paying the premium if i get excellent service- As i see it thier is 3 types of service - excellent, fast and cheap, you can only ever do two types of service at once, and i know that i'd normally prefer to pay the premium rather than waiting on some company for 3 months to even look at it or just not do anything about it
