Awesome original tyranid color schemes or inspiration for such. Doesnt have to be done or anything, could even just be words. Lets get a lot of answers so a lot of people can get a lot of good out of this. Just anything you can think of. (Lets stay on topic if we can this time please) Automatically Appended Next Post: Come on people. Help a brotha out. I think you're on the wrong section for this kind of questions
If you're looking for scheme, just skim through the P&M blogs or white dwarfs (if you have)
Phil Kelly's army has a pretty neat scheme, and is honestly pretty easy to achieve

There's only so much you can do with nids and have it look "right", I would take a pic of a guant from the old codex online(try scribd) they have a big
hand drawn pic of a guant, and put color to certain parts of it in photoshop for inspiration. I think tan/offwhite/lightbrown, are all suitable for body color, the chitin, can
be an opposing color, or pop color. Doing something that hasn't been done is kind of limiting you as well, do the alien theme, Fish suggested it, and
I've seen it done to pleasing effect. Maybe more than one color could be the way, like red/black/green, or yellow. Most Nid armies I see are only two primary colors, so this could help set you apart. Or make their extremities be darker, and their bodies
lighter, to give a different effect, and simulate blood circulation.

I cant stand GW's color schemes. Do whatever you like. I have a box of Termigaunts that are taking me forever, but theyre black carapace, teal bodies, and bright blue details. Then I wash it to darken up and give a slimy tone.

The best colour schemes for tyranids (or any army really) are usually simple. Trying too much on a single model can make it look messy.
Choose a few colours and use simple paterns.
Also, something I noticed and tried on the majority of mine was that the colour used for either the carapace or the body is usually dark and the other colour much lighter, either way round works (dark body/light carapace or dark carapace/light body). If both are dark or light then the model can look a bit boring or unfinished.
The other thing that I like (but isn't absolutely necessary) for tyranids in particular is to try and keep the colour scheme looking natural. By that I mean make it look like the colours have been created by natural processess and not painted on as you would do for a marine's armour. So avoid straight lines and harsh highlights, do more blending etc...
The best thing I think to do for inspiration for tyranids is to look on the internet for pictures of real life animals. Beetles, crabs and their relatives are usually good for this. Don't just look at them for the colours themselves but the placement of the colours, where is it darker, where does the patern start and end and so on.
And of course look at the gallery here on DakkaDakka and adapt what you find. If you find a red and blue tyranid, try an orange and purple scheme...
And as a shameless plug, look at my tyranids, each one is different and so my blog and gallery has a high concentration of scheme variety and houses examples of everything above, both good and bad.

That's actually a really good idea, a lot of insects have bright or dramatic colors. That red and blue bug looks pretty cool and might be neat for Tyranids.

This is a pretty good point
dark skin - bright carapace
light skin - dark carapace
And yeah, Tyranids need to be simple. They're actually pretty quick and easy to paint, I think.
They look better when painted mostly with inks too, I only use acrylic paint on their carapace.

I have seen beetle nids before. you paint the skin the color of the fleshy parts of a beetle and then on top you black base coat and put india ink on it. it gives a pearl appearance and in different lights it shines different colors. kinda cool IMHO
