I'm looking for a good magazine that covers both fig painting and terrain stuff. Is there a good one out there? Not looking for WD, as from what I have read here its total crap for that.

You're certainly not looking for White Dwarf, and that's really all I can add. Besides saying I am interested in magazines like this too.

No Quarter still has great terrain and painting tutorials in it. And it's cheaper than White Dwarf.

Is there one that isn't game specific?

There are several good books on making terrain. You can find them on Amazon.

There are also blogs which give terrain tips, via Google.

I'm not aware of a magazine that gives a lot of terrain advice. Possibly the amount of advice available from the other sources means it isn't a major topic for magazines.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

If you are looking for great terrain/modeling advice from a magazine, I suggest something like Military Illustrated Modeller. This, and others like it, provide awesome vehicle modeling and painting advice/inspiration.
For realistic terrain, there are many magazines on the topic of model railroading that will help you to create excellent layouts.
For games like warhammer and warmahordes , you will want O-scale terrain, whereas Flames of War would benefit from HO-scale.
These source have proven very helpful to me.
Hope this helps.

Would second this, some of the military modelling magazines can have fantastic articles on making different bits and pieces. A lot of it translates very well into tabletop wargaming, and a friend of mine absolutely swears by the weathering/weather effect stuff he was taught by those magazines.

Wargames Illustrated also has good articles from time to time. It has a focus on historical gaming, but again there is no difference to using those techniques on a fantasy/sci-fi miniature or gaming board.

Thanks for the info. Next time I go out and about, I will keep an eye out for them.

It's hard to beat the interwebs for terrain and painting advice.

For Terrain, I recommend:
http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/
www.ironhands.com

I also recommend picking up the now OOP Games Worskhop book "How to make Wargames Terrain" It's not the state of the art cutting edge techniques, but it has just about all you need to know for making quality terrain.

I actually picked up both of the GW books for terrain. Ebay and Amazon found them for me.

Nice! I have both as well. I find them to be an excellent resource and refer to them often.
