Is it viable in this edition? Do the new reserve rules make it less viable...being honest it was always an idea I've wanted to try

I believe you have to start with at least half of your force on the board.

You can still have your entire army in drop thoughs.

The other problem it has are flyers. It has no means to take them out and not nearly enough bodies to ignore them.

It was never that good really due to piecemealing of your army. Plus, you have that awkward turn where you can't assault. That is a very, very bad turn usually. In general, you do not want you army coming in piecemeal.

Re-rollable 3+ makes it much less random now so I wouldn't worry too much about piecemealing the army. However, the other problems are still valid..

You'll just die to shooting and assault isn't even very useful anymore so you're better off just making a shooting based BA list.

New Reserves rules mean you can't DoA your entire army. You need a more hybrid list.

That said, with fast units on the board you can use DoA to get local unit superiority and a jump on your enemy. And don't forget the much-maligned vanguard veterans, who can use DoA with Heroic Intervention to tie up a shooty unit in assault and protect you from some return fire.

My BA list is now shooting based. With ASM back up to protect the shooty stuff.

The vanguard *are* maligned because of what they pay just for jump packs!

how awesome would they be if you didn't have to pay for the JPs? They should just come with it really, you're really only buying them for heroic intervention. Its a slap in the face you can't use it unless you take the packs. ARRRgghh.

I've just resigned myself to a relatively meat and potatoes BA list. I can't really even attempt to squeeze in toys until 2K. Right now, I'm messing around with bikers because they get FNP vs crazy stuff, plus a jink.

funny, I was too. I know this is off topic, but how do you play your vehicles? i usually build a list around 2 baal preds and either 2 preds or 2 vind? I'm just curious what your core build is.

For 1500, I've been using one auto/las, one dakka Baal, one Whirlwind, two las/plas Razors and three attack bikes that hang out with the ASM blob to get FNP. So far, its done much better than trying to rush jumpers.

I used to have a vindi, but I mathhammered it out that in many cases, the dakka Baal is better, and it can kinda shoot flyers.

DoA in 6th slobs the proverbial knob because of having to have half your army on the table. The only army I've had success with it against is IG because of the large concentration of armor. I can give each squad 2 meltas or infernus pistols, drop in and toast the vehicles. Other than that I just get a lead milkshake coming across the board. I'm working on an effective hybrid list right now because I really love the jump infantry and assaulty stuff.

Crimson Fist 5th Company - 2000 pts

The Army of Carroburg (Empire) 2500 pts

The Grand Reclamation Force of the Karaz Ankor (Dwarfs) 6000 points.

I've had more luck foot slogging my assault marines across the table. Jump and run turn 1, jump and assault turn 2.
Opponent gets 1, maybe 2 shooting phases before I hit his lines. Librarian(s) provide cover for the whole advance.

As opposed to deep striking: Something has to start on the table, while the other half lands turn 2 and assaults turn 3.

The footslogging (I guess jump-slogging is a better term) brings my whole force a the enemy at once, not letting them get that extra shooting phase in.
