Hey all. I searched for an answer and couldn't find a satisfactory answer so I'll post my question here and see what you all think.
I recently obtained a whole bunch of IG bits from a friend. It was basically the old Cadian battleforce minus four guardsmen. With that I got a whole bunch of heavy weapon bits but sadly only two of the large 60mm(I think?) bases. I only currently have one full weapon squad as is but they have missile launchers. I figured I could just use those bases for the autocannons and such and mount my missile troops on standard bases. I have a bunch of grenade launcher guys (Yeah I know, I was young.) and alot of missile launchers, is it generally okay to put missile launcher heavy weapon teams on standard bases? I figure that if there is any sort of in game rules issue that the benefit of the doubt goes to my opponent. I know that two of my regulars couldn't care less but I wanted to get a general consenus before ripping apart my army.

Technically "standard bases" for HWTs are the 60mm ones
However, if your normal opponents don't care, then it doesn't matter and you can go with individual bases. You do need to remember that the loader doesn't get to fire his lasgun to match up with the current HWT rules. On the other hand, you can get additional bases for about a pound, either proper GW bases, or other manufacturer bases.

Interestingly enough one of my opponents always tries to convince me that the loader does get to shoot his lasgun. And as far as I can tell, there aren't that many circumstances for the HWT that the base will matter all that much. But again in this case my opponents get the benefit of the doubt.
I'd like to eventually put them all on 60mm but magnitized so I can remove one due to wounds. Where is the best and cheapest place to get large bases in US? My FLGS doesn't carry any 60mm only the 40mm.

Just remember, when you remove one to signify loss of a wound, you are modifying the model mid-game. Most people won't care, but it can and will affect LOS to and from the model.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Separate standard bases would give quite an advantage to the guard player.
Anyone who's ever tried to deploy their heavy weapon squads behind an ADL will know exactly how annoyingly large they are.

Up until the current codex, he could. The problem these days is that there is no 'gunner' and 'loader'... there is a Heavy Weapon Team, which is a single two-wound model that is represented by two guys on a base. That model has no specific permission to fire more then one weapon a turn like everyone else.

Yep, nothing prevents you from making your own bases out of cardstock or cardboard. If you were to use them without a 60, just use one HW model (ie no 'loader') with two wouonds, that way none of the other issues unrelated to base size will arise. I do this with my RT era IG.

I have a friend, who plays Imperial Guard, who insists that the Heavy Weapons teams(60mm bases) are two models, and should take two hits if under a template/blast marker, and if they take a wound from a s6+ weapon, only one guardsman dies. No matter what i say, i can't get him to see it any other way...

Ask him to show you where they count as two models for any reason other than transport capacity.

Alternately, Litko Aerosystems sells a pack of 10 wooden ones, 3mm thick, for $2.99. They also sell a bunch of other materials and thicknesses, but I think these are the cheapest.

The codex states that they are one model. I have stopped putting two men on one base because of the two wounds shenanagens that people have tryed to pull. Now just saying his cover took the hit, or he is just a thick skinned guardsman. (This also gives me another normal guardsman for my squads.)
As far as the base goes GW use to make Steal Legion Rocket Launchers on two smaller bases, I dont see why it isnt legal for you to do the same, but if your opponent cries just have a 60 shadow to place as a base.

Because the HWT is one model with two wounds, not two models.

He's just flat out wrong. The codex is EXPLICITLY clear on this: It is one model with two wounds, as per the entry on HWTs (This is why they supply them with one base). There is no grey area, or other way to interpret it.

Yeah I don't think it matters if you only model one guy on the HWT base. I have though about ripping one guy of each of my HWt bases to make an extra squad of guardsman. If anything I guess this boarders on MFA?

It can be due to the fact you are modifying LOS to the model, however, I wouldn't care.

Wouldn't LoS always be drawn from the weapon firing. IE the tip of a lascannon or AC.
Nevermind, you mean LOS to the HWT. I guess it could minimally affect it.

LoS is always drawn from the eyes of an infantry model, never the weapon.
