Hi folks. It was my Birthday recently, & I was the lucky recipient of the Fortress of Redemption. Lovely model. Surprisingly simple to stick together. It’s also an absolute BEAST of a model. I can’t see me using it in anything but massive games, purely due to the size of it on a normal table. It’s literally about 2 foot long, by about 9” wide & 18” high!

Anyway. This model, (lovely as it is to look at) seems a strange one to me. If I was going to take it, I definitely pay the extra 30 points to upgrade it to ‘fragstorm missiles’, this then makes it 250 points. So basically, it’s an immobile Land Raider, with a minimum range of 18". I can’t really see the point in paying 10 point a pop for the Heavy Bolters (as this just makes it MORE expensive, for relatively useless guns).

My problem is this:
If I take it, the annexes can house troops inside, which can then fire out from relative fire points. However, the only part of it that actually has fire points is the walk way between the two annexes. So basically, the men have to go on top, unless you want squads sitting inside the whole game, unable to do anything. To fire both of it’s guns (missiles & ILC) I need a least a squad on each end. The main tower is a medium building, so can house up to 20 men, but again - has NO FIRE POINTS!!!! Then the space on top of the building is probably just about large enough to house one devastator squad (if your lucky), which will then put them nicely grouped up to be killed by a pie plate or similar.

Another thing that baffles me, are the assault rules for buildings. Apparently they work like vehicles, but both armies can enter. So, if I put a unit inside the annex which has the only entrance point on it, does that mean I can’t be assaulted as it’s already occupied? Also, what if this only entrance annex gets destroyed/made impassable & the rest of the building is still occupied, are the men stuck in there or what?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great model. But for it’s price in pounds & points, what the hell am I supposed to do with it?

"If it Bleeds, we can kill it!"

I like the Fortress, rather want one myself.

Yes, it's 220pts base, but that gets you 4 places to hide models (the central 'walkway' seems to have 6 Firepoints on each side, so you can hide inside, not just on top.) (You can probably model more in if you're that way inclined )

You also can also easily emplace 4-5 more units on top (around gun, around silo, 1-2 on the walkway, then one on top of the tower). So that's a potential 9 units on/in the thing, with the 2 weapons to start.

The upgrades, yeah the Krakstorm is effectively an auto-take, meaning it's 250pts base.

The Heavy Bolters aren't a bad weapon - 36", Str5 is a lot better in 6th, as it can reliably glance vehicles to death - and it's nice and useful for Heavy Weapon teams.
Though it's effectiveness and worth varies on unit.
For example - the Sisters of Battle unit with the Rending Heavy bolter power can get a potential 4 extra Heavy Bolters out of it.
Long Fangs and other Heavy Weapon squads can give one to the Character, meaning he gets a Heavy Weapon with Precision Shots to throw around, rather than sitting there doing nothing.

Furthermore, the top of the tower gives a fantastic firing arc and LOS for your Heavy Weapons.

To add to what ovion said, another great thing about the FoR is that it is at the opponents disadvantage if they try and LoS block the fort as well and you can deploy troops into it, as long as its 12 inchs away from the center of the board.

IMO the matches you get the most use out of it is a hammer and anvil kill points game.

To many unpainted models to count.

I love the fortress. Each section counts as it's own building, which is it's own piece of terrain. That makes the fortress 4 pieces of terrain.

Drop that in a corner and you're opponent can't place any terrain near it.
I run it with harker and ratlings and place it just forward of my own DZ. That prevents any terrain placement in the center of the board. It also lets me hide ordnance batteries and russes behind it.

It's vulnerable to dedicated anti-tank weapons like anything else, but in an army with a ton of heavy armor to begin with, it's nice.

Edit: totally get the heavy bolters. Harker and his unit mans the HB's giving me 18 S5 shots and 3 sniper rifles.
