Well, besides the kill it and make give your army preferred enemy, I stumbled on a useful use of a 50 point HQ with no Save.

The problem with an Aegis and Quad gun I was having was finding some one to sit on the gun that would not be better else where. I also just happen to have an Ethereal who is BS3 and does not actual come equipped with a gun and is desperate for cover saves.

The combo is almost as good as cookies and milk. All my nice 30" S5 guns are free to move and shoot, I don't have any expensive suits manning a gun when they should do the JSJ, I give the the saveless, gunless HQ a nice gun and a cover save.

Ageis, gun and Ethereal is 150 points for an AA solution that also happens to give re-rollable Moral to every Tau with LOS, while it is cheaper than Allies does any think it is a point waste?

Here is the reason why I don't like ethereals.

Oh. Tau have bad Leadership. Lets give them an HQ that just buffs their leadership. No fancy weapons or anything, just a nice ol' buff. And if he dies, everyone will take a moral check. Because.

"Didn't you just say that Tau have bad leadership withouth him?"

Shut up!

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

I like the ethereal. Tau ld is bad, he makes it better and is cheap. A fearless kroot block doesn't suck either, especial with an aegis.

While it's true if he dies your gonna have a bad time, it's not super easy to kill him either. Also, I like the aegis idea, as the aegis may block Los to him.

I enjoy forcing morale checks, so any time a player puts an ethereal on the field I know an easy way to make that so.

So....I'd discourage it

It's only problematic if you put your army along the back table edge like you're trying to avoid an assault or something.

But really, what Army is so bad at close combat that they would try to stay at the back edge of the table?

What if you took 2 ethereals in 2K+ games?
Would that work out better?

My my, you could then re-roll those failed morale checks. Interesting though.

That is if the enemy doesn't kill both ethereals. You'd need to have both in LOS to a majority of your army to get the most out of them. That would also make you run twice the risk of them running off the board. You could run three at 2k, but now its just being silly.

Ethereals are fairly useless at the moment; using him to man a quad-gun works, I suppose, but for anti-aircraft you're almost better off spending 130pts on a Barracuda (Ion Cannon, Missile Pod, two Burst Cannons, and Seeker Missilers) in terms of effectiveness, versatility, and durability.

I don't think you can, actually; doesn't the 1+ Crisis commander requirement apply to every detachment?

Hmm... That's an interesting question. I only figured that the +1 was per army.

Unfortunately that requires Forgeworld at the moment. So an Ethereal ona Guad gun seems like a solid codex anti-flyer, while a squad of Gundrones makes a great anti-FMC unit. I wish the Skyray had gotten FAQed back to forgeworld rules.
