It is amazing how much Forge World can turn out in such a small space of time. I thought they were a small company, but they seem to be making a ton more progress than Citadel. They're making their own rulebooks, with canon as well, and now they're releasing their own minigame in an amazingly short time. What gives?

I thought Forge World was a sub-company that really just worked on its own.

Nope - it's GW doing business as Forge World.
They were a separate company in the 90s iirc, but that company folded and the current FW has nothing to do with that one.

Its dissapointing. I've always preferred Forge World over GW. I thought they were the ones that made the good books.

Way to hate GW solely for the sake of it.
But blind hate is trendy.
Forgeworld is an interesting example, however, from a business standpoint. They tend to not stagger or clump releases like GW does, as they're not as immediately influenced by shareholders, like GW proper. Without being beholden to quarterly reports, or at least those reports aren't the focus of their operations, they've got a lot more freedom to act as they please.
Also, considering most of their products are products of passion, rather than products deemed marketable, how much they produce, and what they produce, is largely up to the creativity and interests of the designers.
Really, it's a bunch of 40k nerds making models as they think of them, and trying to come up with some fun, effective rules for them, along with offering some special army lists now and then, and whether or not it's a financial success really seems to be secondary.
I think FW is a great thing for the hobby, and the only thing I'd wish were for the models to become more available in North America; shipping from the UK is incredibly expensive after customs charges, and I'd like to see a little more non-Imperial love. I'm a guard player, so FW is kind of like "the gak" for me, more options than I can shake a stick at, constant expansions and new additions, but I'd like to see the Tau, Eldar, Necrons and so on get some more regular attention.
|
Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

I totally wish it was cheaper to get some of their Eldar models shipped here. I really like the looks of Hornets and Warp Hunters. The Wraithseer I really like, but I could quite frankly convert a model that looks just as good locally without exorbitant shipping , so that's out.

And they don't really need all those tiny details. My friend's FW Space Marines only have a little bit more details than normal space marines - surely that could be cast in plastic? Of course, GW is at the top, in their intricate spider web of control, looking over everything.
Shadowy GW CEO: Mr Ward, how are we in the forge world department?
Ward (Second in Command): Lord, we are not in good condition. The Forge World team is considering... Casting in plastic instead of finecast.
Shadowy GW CEO: Bring them to me.
(Forge World Team is brought in. Executed.
Shadowy GW CEO: Mr Ward, you are in charge of Forge World. You are also the canon writer for all of Forge World's books. You are also the creative designer. The Art Director. And everything else. The enjoyment of the consumer, nor their economical state, is important. Just get me my money.
Random MiniWargamer: NOOOOOOO!
So it's probably for the best that they continue to make failcast.

One of our group just got both of those units; 5 Hornets and a pair of Warp Hunters; awesome looking, sleek, deadly models. We had a good ol' fashioned tank war between my Guard and his Eldar, t'was great fun. The only problem is apparently they don't sit on their bases well; requires some modifications to either the stand or the hole in the model.

Err, what? Those tiny details are the reason we buy FW stuff. Moving it all to plastic would destroy that and destroy the entire point of FW.

Forgeworld doesn't sell in the huge quantites that GW proper does, and GW proper can't afford to make everything plastic due to mold tooling costs and time, and production time. Before the blind hate - I'm sure GW would love to do everything in plastic. They sell it for about the same price as resin, and once the mold is made, it costs a tiny fraction to produce plastic. A plastic kit is pure money if it sells enough to justify the mold cost and production time in the machine. For Forgeworld, even with the recent popularity of the Horus Heresy stuff, they just don't have the resources dedicated to them to do plastic, and don't sell enough to justify giving them those resources. They're a niche of a niche.

*Whoosh*
As Loki said - they HAVE to use resin, because it allows you to produce cost effective low volume runs of products. Plastic is very, very expensive to set up, the machines themselves are very, very expensive, and time on them is consequently limited.
The clumping for GW is they have to produce sufficient stock for their stores, webstores and independents, on machines that have little spare capacity so scheduling becomes key, and get them there. Logistically they are orders of magnitudes more complicated than FW. FW can almost produce on demand - all except big releases this is pretty much wha tthey do.

See, with all my grav-type bases(including jetbikes), I re-drill the hole in the base of the model big enough for the flying stand pin to fit about 1/4 to 1/3 it's length into the model. Then when you insert the stem, you give it a bit of a twist and it friction fits in place, allowing to to remove it for transport and storage.
I so want the IA 11 book for all the Eldar stuff but it's soooooo expensive!

I'd like to chime in however, and say that "resin produces better detail than plastic" is not true anymore.
With the advances in digital modelling, plastic models can have enormous detail; look at the Chaos side of Dark Vengeance, or the new Warp Talons to see there's enormous potential for detail, or heck, the limited edition Chaplain is overflowing in detail.
The difference, however, between FW and GW is that FW has always produced high-detail models, prior to GW's advancements in plastic casting. As it is, most armies still use old, relatively low-detail models, as it'll be some time before the entire range is replaced, if at all.
Furthermore, FW produces realistic detail; equipment, armour, battle damage, sensors and so on, GW throws candles, votive items, flowing robes, lanyards and so on on everything; they're detailed, but are a little, well, silly at times. This, I feel, skews the perception; FW is only somewhat more detailed than contemporary GW models, but the style and focus is on much more realistic, perhaps, mature detail than just Bling, Bling and Bling on top of the Bling.
Also, their infantry tend to have better proportions, the guardsmen in particular look much more like actual people.

You can say it was obvious sarcasm, but I can think of plenty of people who would be perfectly happy to give up on that extra detail if it means cheap plastic kits for their favorite game-winning model.
MajorStoffer wrote:I'd like to chime in however, and say that "resin produces better detail than plastic" is not true anymore.
Of course it's still true. For example, plastic models can't have undercuts which means compound curves get distorted (for example, the exhausts on a Leman Russ), things like DKoK gas mask hoses being separate from the body can't be done at all, etc. Even GW's best plastic kits still fall short, and the fundamental limits of the technology mean that this will always be the case.
