I put together this ADL to fit in with my Kroot Mercenary army. The wall pieces are from the stockade set made by www.achesoncreations.com, which has some great 28mm resin pieces. The pieces are nearly identical to the dimensions of the Games Workshop defense line, and I was able to make four long pieces and four short pieces that have the same lengths, they're just a little shorter on the height. I painted the logs grey to be more like a birch wood due to the heavy presence of browns already used throughout my army. The quad gun is made from a finecast Krootox with the rider removed, and four of the Krootox guns bundled together with a heavy bolter. Overall the appearance of the defense line fits in great with the army, adding a more primitive-looking fortification that has become a vital purchase for my sixth edition games.

they all look... half done.
This is gonna sound more harsh than I mean it to be, but it looks like crayons stuck in brown play-doh.

You need highlights to the brown to make it look a bit more like mud and the wooden poles look too foreign to me. You could obviously say that it's alien wood, and that's how it looks, but in the end, you don't want to go too alien. You want some realism in there.

Still, I'd totally play with these, and they would look fine enough on any game board. But you know... some different hues and some weathering wouldn't hurt.

Even something as simple as some drybrushing and washes would probably make a world of difference.

A+ on the concept and construction.

They may be right on the painting (which I fully admit looks better than what I could have done) but still, it is a very, very great concept and well built.

Great job, now I have to go work on some ideas . . .

Absolutely brilliant idea.

Though I would sharpen the poles more and put some more paint on them.

The mud is fine in my opinion.

I don't think they look too foreign at all. It reminds me that when the IG goes to an alien planet they dont bring trenches with them they use what they have there, so why wouldnt the kroot do the same?
The two things I would suggest is that if you took the time to sharpen those sticks you wouldn't then cut the top to dull it. Maybe its for safety but i think they could still be a bit sharper than that...
And second, like everybody else said a wash and some highlighting would definitely help.

Nice concept.

I would dry brush the brown a lighter colour to get a bit of a contrast going and wash the poles, then it will look ace

i agree the Kroot line needs a wash but looks good in the idea department. Also I love you Krootox AA gun that is wickedly cool.

While I echo the sentiment that another layer of detail over the stockade would make it look better, as a fellow Kroot Merc player I applaud what you've done, especially the Krootox! That's definitely an idea I would steal for my own army.

I agree with all above, a little simply on the paint job but the concept is great, and i love the Quad auto cannon concept, far more mobile than the imperial version

The overwhelming response confirms my thoughts on the walls. I am going to extend the sand down to the base of the mud and add some patches of flock and static grass to include some extra colors. I definitely took the approach in my mind that fortifications are more like terrain than models and so I didn't put any attention to detail. I may even add some vines climbing up some of the walls for extra detail. As for the logs, I still want them to be grey rather than the normal brown of tree bark, but do not want it to look alien. I certainly didn't pull off birch too convincingly:

It looks like a good plan may be to drybrush a light grey across the logs but only in a left-right brush stroke to get the horizontal line effect seen on birch, and then go back and add some dark splotches. The tips of the logs will be inked with a darker color than what I already used (I actually drybrushed all the grey with a lighter grey previously, and then inked the whole wall but it clearly wasn't strong enough and doesn't come out in the photos). I'll redo one section of the wall and post a comparison pic, thanks for all the criticisms as I would not have spent the effort to add anymore work to this otherwise! I'm glad the quad gun works for everyone, that was what I actually wanted to build and paint out of this entire project.

I love it. As will many above, do a wash on the wood. I would like to see some foliage too though. Add broken branches in with leaves still on them or something. Kroot are all about the jungles and forests. The wooden palisade looks good but IMO it needs some more green.

Agreed on all who suggest adding to those logs, a little weathering and a little variation in the color on each would be cool. Pretty cool idea using those pieces in this context, a very good purchase indeed.

Brilliant idea. Nice execution. Your painting is good so with some reworking your logs will improve. Well done.

I actually painted some faux birch recently for a non-war gaming project, its pretty easy. I did it by using Straight white as a base and dry brush the black in small circles. Maybe that helps
