I play against an opponent who consistently fields 2 basilisks and it throws my strategy off 100 percent. He just deploys thrlem behind large buildings I can't get line of sight to it and surrounds them so I can't deepstrike crisis suits (I play tau) and it's down right unfair. Gunline didn't work because they basically insta kill a squad of crisis suits every turn or just destroys my hammerhead and so far I ha never been able to anything about it. Nothing.

Arr this is a comman problem when taking of the IG guns (for future note please leave more info on what models you have it helps) ok looking at what the tau have and I would say a Barracuda or two other wise you could get some allies maybe use some IG allies bomb him back sorry not a tau expert and you are using one of the oldest codexs.

Bring Vendettas. Problem solved.
(Or bring Barracudas, but you are taking allied IG meatshields, right?)

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

No, I don't have any ig and barracudas are way out of my price range, I'm hoping for a big change in the rumoured feb. Tau update but for the time being I have 14 fire warriors, 10 kroot, 4 kroot hounds, 4 stealtsuits, 5 battlesuits, 1 battlesuit commander, 1 hammerhead, 2 crisis suits, 1 piranha, 8 pathfinders and a devilfish and for allies options I have 5 chaos havocs, 1 chaos lord, 1 sorcerer, 1dark apostle, 5 plague marines, 5 normal marines, the dark vengeance chaos, 1 defiler for necron allies I have 28 warriors, 2 ghost arks, 10 immortals, 1 annihilation barge, 1 overlord, 1 lord, 1 destroyer lord, 1 cryptek, imotekh, 5 lychguard w/dispersion shields, 10 death marks and for desperate allies I have dark eldar: 1 razorwinf fighter/voidraven bomber, 2 raiders, 1 venom, 23 kabalite warriors, 2 haemonculi, 1 archon, 4 wracks, 5 scourges, and 4 trueborn w/2 splinter cannons and 3 trueborn w/2 darklances

I'd go with 3 crisis suits, twin-linked missile pods and flamer.
141 points.
Deep strike within 36" for side shots.
6 shots at S7 vs open topped AV10 isn't tough to kill.
Flamers are always nice vs guard to fill the 3rd hardpoint.

It shouldn't be easy to hide bassy's completely. Anything that's able to deep strike/outflank should be tasked with engaging them.

You just need to get in range. Thy are AV10 opentopped. a good round with Burst cannons should be enough to see them off.

yeah but he just takes the big buildings and hides them behind, I literally can't get line of sight even with flyers sometimes. Is that legal? i mean the barrels of their guns are pointing at the walls of the buildings but he says because they don't need line of sight they can fire through it and he parks them in the very back of the field so i can't hit their rear armour.

Not even that should be able to hide basilisks if you try to get them, and it certaintly won't hide them from Flyers.
Yes, its true they won't need LoS because they are a barrage weapon.
And there is no difference between their front, side, or rear armor. Its all 10.

That's totally legal. Although normally terrain placement (aside from fortifications) must be agreed on by both players. So you could say that you don't want that piece of terrain in that position. The side armor is the same as the rear armor. He gains nothing from protecting the rear. Deep strike. Seriously, that'll fix it all. They're AV:10 on the side, it's not hard to glance them. If you have something that can pen, they're open-topped, it's very easy to get an explode result with melta weapons. Surely tau have access to plenty of deep striking units. Once you shoot you can jump and hide from the rest of his army (I assume, I don't play tau) making it a pretty safe bet, and not suicidal like most deep strikers. Weather the storm for one or two rounds of shooting. If you get 1st turn and night fighting, he won't even be able to shoot them since he can't target units >36" away.

Thank you so much for reminding me, I don't know why I didn't think of using night fighting but just to verify would a search light allow his basilisks to target a unit even if they don't have line of sight?

I don't quite see the problem. He has a unit which doesn't move, sticks out like a saw thumb (possibly another bodily part) and has very weak armor. I've run basilisks in the past and found them too vulnerable for my play style.
I don't play tau but I do play guard. Their weak armor and 'Open topped' means they can be pretty badly damage from even some anti-infantry weapons. All you need is a delivery method. Well not even that, just something to get in LOS by the sounds of it. Either a vehicle or transport, deepstrike or even an out-flank unit could work. If you choose the vehicle method, you'll need to take a few because most opponants are not stupid enough to watch a lone transport role up to their lines. That counts double for guard gun-lines. Another method would be a barrage weapon. Do hunter-killer weapons need LOS? i've not used them for two editions.
Surely Tau has some way to get a unit with a half decent gun to job site. The unit will be slaughter afterwards of course so keep it cheap. It's a suicide unit.

Statistically, you will almost certainly die when assaulting a well-maintained fortress with a competent commander. You must strive to make your death useful.

actually you're right, He had been playing them as side armour 11, which F*#$ed me over, but now that I know that, a squad of 15 kroot flanking and rapid firing it in the side or some stealth suits with 3 burst cannons flanking it should work.

What else does he field in his army? As if you manage to kill the bassies early on , you can just JSJ. Remember, your hammerhead and fish still get a 3 up cover save, so they should be sweet. Also, how much terrain do you guys play with? Try shaking it up a bit.
Or get some broadsides.

I have 2 broadside conversions that he allows me to use but he uses BA allies or plays as BA and uses basilisks in IG allied detachment, so usually a valkyrie vendetta, 2 of the plasma leman russ that fire 5 str7 ap2 blasts each, 2 leman russ punishers or battletanks and about 2-4 chimeras, sometimes a hellhound, alot of heavy weapons teams, he runs a squad of 3 missile launchers a squad of lascannons and a a squad of autocannons ussually and a few guard squads, heavy on the plasma, then if he is using BA he will have a large squad of death company with a sanguinary priest for that 3+ fnp, then the sanguinor (who I can ussually kill pretty easily) and 2 5 man assault squads with melta, a land speeder with 2 multi meltas and sometimes a landraider plus a few tactical squads with those 5pt plasma cannons.

If he's running the IG as allies he only has 1 heavy support slot to use. So it is either Basilisks or LRBTs as they share the HS slot.

Can't crysis suits deep strike? I feel like you're forgetting some really obvious here. Kroot and stealth suits are useless if the crysis suits can indeed deep strike.

No, I'm not forgeting that they can deepstrike, but the way his army and the scenery is my battlseuits can not ussualy deepstrike without severe risk of mishap which I would rather not have happen.

The plasma/melta crysis suits would be better, espeically if he has them squadroned. 50% for explosion with the plasma and 67% chance with the melta. Should blow through the whole squad in one round of shooting.

Sorry, can't answer that with any confidence. I play against tau, not with them. My opponents usually deep strike 1 squad of 3 or 2 squads of 3, although with separate weapons. I believe deathrain and helios. Not entirely sure though.

If your opponent is putting basilisks literally out of LOS, and is packing so many infantry around them that you literally can't deepstrike anything anywhere near them, then you're talking about a guard army that is doing nothing more than hiding in a corner. This is a very, very weak position, strategically speaking. Make use of cover, and capture objectives. You win the game by winning the game, not by killing the basilisks.
Also, don't tau have smart missiles or something that can shoot over terrain? As mentioned, basilisks are hella flimsy.
I started my guard army specifically to handle tau and eldar (well, MSM armies in general), and I found the basilisk to be surprisingly... crummy. They're just too easy to kill against a fieldcraft-savvy opponent.
As such, don't look too hard at your list, look at how things are playing out on the table. Unfortunately, without a few good battle reports (with pictures, etc.), we're not going to be able to help you very much with fieldcraft.

This.
Also remember that he must use the full scatter of the basilisk when he's hiding them out of LOS. This will significantly reduce his accuracy with his blast templates,
