Subject: Minitaire Airbrush Paints. Are they worth it?

So i read an article on BoLS about these paints. It read mostly as an infomercial tbh but I checked out the paints anyways. My wife bought me a nice little airbrush set up off Amazon for Christmas and before I go diving in mixing GW paints all over the place to spray on my miniatures I wanted to ask if any of you have used the Minitaire paints by Badger and if so are they good/worth it? Do they match up with GW paints well? I ask because most of my airbrushing will be for base colors and then I will be using brushed for details, so I will be mixing the paint brands at different stages.
I know a lot of Aribrush info already exists on Dakka so you could just point me in the right direction too. I appreciate it!

Ichiban Painting has just recently started using the Minitaire paints and so far apparently he really likes them.

Wargamers Consortium has also been promoting these paints as well and they've got a review on them.

The Ghost Tints from the Minitaire line are really interesting, they might be fun to try out for some interesting colors.

Paints are paints, everyone has their own preferences as to which paints they like to use. If you use GW, it doesn't hurt to use them through the airbrush. If you're interested in the MInitaire paints, definitely try them out and see how they compare to GW or other paints. The Ghost Tints are definitely interesting seeing what you can do with them from the Youtube videos.

I was in the same situation Overwatch. I've had an airbrush for years and had only used it a few times. My wife got me a sweet airbrush booth for Christmas so I felt I "HAD" to start using my airbrush again, but the thought of mixing and thinning paints was not getting me excited. After watching a few YouTube videos I decided to them. I only got a few colors to do some Deathwing Terminators and I'm blown away with them. No thinning, easy clean up, great coverage. I'm still perfecting my method but any mistakes I make is due to operator error and not the paint. I'm so impressed I'm picking up the whole set.

I just recieved mine, and I'm quiet interested in using them. I'm in the boat with BigJon, mixing and thinning paints is not what I concider fun. I was going to use Vallejo Model Air, but their colors are mainly geared towards military modelers. I do still plan on getting some Vallejo Model Air colors though.

My Minitaire set just arrived today too - there was a 6 week delay because of high demand. Have only tried a few colours but they've all been great. I have a lot of VGC, VMC and VMA which are generally good colours, but the constant consistency between the Minitaire paints is great for airbrushing which I'm doing more and more. As to how accurately they match, I just tried Minitaire "Lust Pink" compared to VGC squid pink, and they're basically identical, but the lust pink is a little more glossy. At the 50% off it was going for before christmas it was definitely worth getting the set. 80 paints of that quality for $135 was a great price. At full price I'd probably suggest getting the ones you need individually rather than the set if you're a hobbyist.

I managed to find the 50% off on amazon.com though it is on delay so I have to wait for it to come back into stock.
Looking at the color chart it has all my paints I normally use in the old GW/VGC lines (or appear to be) plus the ghost tints look like blending/OSL would be a breeze.
since they are in airbrush format, I wont need to thin them down for brushing, So looks like things will be a bit easier there, though I still plan to keep up with some of my VMC paints just because there are a few there that are nice to have around.

I got my set and I have started using them, and for the most part I am impressed, very handy..
One thing that I have noticed, and I'm not sure if it was me doing something wrong, but I primed my 3 test mini's in vallejo primer (no problem) then I base coated in rock grey, then a slightly lighter shade of grey, then I thought I would try out the ghost tints and sprayed the mini's in brown ghost tint, then they just kinda looked brown and shiny, then I have gone back over them with werewolf grey and now the grey and brown just seem to "pool" when wet, and every time I leave them over night to dry, then attempt to dust on another light coat of werewolf grey, it all runs and pools again...
Is it necessary to seal the ghost tint off with a Matt varnish or some such? Very strange either way... Not I have brown-grey space wolf test models and I really can't explain why, never had this problem with any paints before...

There was a bit of a discussion on CMON about these paints, and some users didn't like the paints - apparently, they had a tendency to clog the airbrush.
I'm still waiting to get my hands on these for experimentation. Does anyone know a retailer who carries this stuff in Australia?
My usual shop - the Tin Soldier - doesn't.

I've played around with the ghost tints a bit and the few I tried dried a bit glossy, especially if applied heavily. I've heard from a few folks that it's best to let them dry 24 hours before painting or varnishing over them, but I have no personal experience with this part myself; I was just experimenting on plasticard

Defiant gaming is stating that they will carry the range and are awaiting delivery - from the wargamerau forums.

Spent some more time with these paints and I'm really happy with them. They brush on well which was a concern. Pretty much all of them dry glossy which is different to most paint ranges.

After using a bunch more paints (15-20 or so now) I'm getting a better feel for the range.
- Some colours are basically an exact match, others definitely aren't.
- There are some *very* nice colours in the range and the set as a whole looks well balanced.
- Only found one colour I don't really like or see a use for, a ridiculously glossy green "envy green" I think it was.
- All colours are glossier than other ranges, some much more so.
- Almost all standard colours brush on very nicely, though depending on basecoat as usual.
- Metallics are bad to brush on, you get a *much* better result with VMA and VLG.
- Ghost Tints are nice but thicker than expected. Require a higher PSI to spray.
- The bottles work well, probably better than the dropper bottles which I liked much more than tubs. There seems to be no dried paint build up due to a good seal which you'd still get with droppers. They come sealed. Only concern might be the plastic hinge could break after a lot of use.

Mixing the Citadel paints is easy, real easy.
The only product I use is Liquitex Airbrush Medium. Its so easy that now I just mix the paint directly in the airbrush's paint cup unless I know loads will be needed.
Takes a pippete (or move some medium into a dropper bottle) and put some into the paint cup, counting the drops. Then take another clean pippete (or clean the first one) and put some of the chosen paint into the cup aswell. To mix them, use one of the pippetes, suck it all up, and put it all back a few times, and stir it about with an old paintbrush a bit.
A good ratio seems to be between 75% and 50% of the airbrush medium. But will vary depending what coverage you desire and the thickness of the original paint.
