Planning to have a test battle with my Ork and Eldar armies this evening just to get back into the game and get a feel for the rules after many, many long years. I was re-reading the manuals and it struck me that there is a finite army size for Orks. Orks have to choose clan cards as their equivalent of detachment cards and are not allowed to pick the same clan more than once, meaning they have a maximum of 7 detachments/clans (Blood Axes, Goffs, Bad Moons, DeathSkulls, Kult of Speed, Evil Sunz, Snakebites). So as per the rules, they can pick one Special per detachment card and 5 support cards per detachment card.

Unlike Orks, if I want to expand my Eldar army, I can just add another detachment card and therefore get more support and special cards, meaing most armies are limited to whatever you have models for in theory but with Orks, only having 6 detachment cards means there is a finite limit, no? Unless I am reading something wrong somewhere. Can't remember hitting that limit ever before in my youth but my Eldar army for tonight is 8600 points and my Orks 8500 - that is using 5 Clan cards. I could add the 2 extra clans and pad it out with Mega Gargants etc but I don't suppose I could get more than 12K or so points. Is that the upper limit for Ork armies?

AFAIK the limit was really only down to the fact that only one card was supplied for each clan, or two if you used the game cards and those from the expansion Ork and Squat Warlords

I cannot see anything wrong in adding extra clans and detachments if you can afford to. There was no great game balance in the system anyway, just great fun to play.

Nothing like fielding two Great Gargant mobs to put the wind up an opponent.

Yeah I appreciate that there is nothing intrinsically wrong or game-breaking in having identical clans, it's more that the Ork and Squat Warlords rulebook baldly states that you cannot choose the same clan twice; presumably to stop people from fielding an all-Goff CC monster. It struck me as being quite a definitive limit to the size of an army whereas other races have no such limits, especially since I was building an army tonight and getting quite close to said limit with a not-particularly massive force it has to be said.

As an addendum, I am really struggling to fit two 8500 point armies into their respective deployment zones on a standard 6x4 board. I think I have found a sensible point cap

I know in Net Epic you can take duplicate clans once you've taken one of each. So you can take 2 Snakebite Clans but you need a Goff, Blood Axe, Bad Moon, Evil Sunz and Deff Skulls clan first. You can also take as many Kults of Speed and Wildboyz as you like.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.
