evening dakka,

I've embarked on my first finecast adventure. I'll spare the rant, but suffice to say I now understand what all the torch & pitchfork waving's been about. I've got some bubbles that I need to fill, bigger than what liquid green stuff can handle. I'm wondering if I'm better off using regular green stuff or milliput, as I have access to both. some of the bubbles are along corners and straight edges (e.g., armor plates) and I think every bloody rivet was topped with a bubble. le sigh. anyway, it's all fixable I'm just not sure what the best material for the job is.

on a related note, once you've applied liquid green stuff are you supposed to shape it/scrape it/sand it at all or just leave it as-is?

cheers,

v

Milliput. Being able to smooth it wit water will be a great help. Also useful as a surface wash to get rid of te roughness finecast sometimes has.
Liquid gs doesn't sand very well. It also shrinks a lot, which you're probably noticing right now.

You can mix green stuff and milliput to get the best properties from both of them, I go with roughly 3 parts GS to 1 part milliput myself. Gives you a rockhard result like milliput but the density of GS and doesn't crumble (or go brittle) like milliput sometimes does.

I have better results when I thin my liquid GS to near paint consistency and paint it on in lots of layers, letting dry between each, then leaving it overnight before sanding (and doing so quite gently).

I can vouch for LGS being useful for filling small gaps. Although i don't have any finecast so i can't help you with that aspect of it.

Ranting and raving aside, did you get a replacement model from GW if yours did have pitting and bubbles?

haven't tried getting a replacement model, partly because the nearest store is over an hour away (got this model from their website) and mostly because I don't expect the next model to be any better. no major parts are missing or miscast. just a few small bubbles in armor plates, the backpack, etc that need addressing. they're either too big for LGS to fill properly or on a corner/edge and need a firmer filler material that I can mold into shape.

Same caveat as Johnno mentioned applies to the Vallejo Plastic Putty - let it cure, not simply dry, before attempting to sand it, otherwise you'll peel it off instead of abrading it down. Ideally, though, sanding isn't necessary. Both VPP and LGS are water soluble, and can be smoothed with a damp brush to make sanding unnecessary. In theory, at least. I've found it... problematic, in practice, with line between "too dry, so it pulls the putty" and "too wet, so if forms a slurry that runs right out of the gap" to be frustratingly fine. I usually overfill slightly, let it cure for a day or two, then carefully sand.

This.

Don't buy GW's overpriced and dyed stuff. This is exactly the same and cheaper.
