Just started on this. We have a little club started at work so thought I would build some stuff.

Not sure about adding the raised walkways. Not sure if it clutters the model.

It is supposed to be some kind of reactor. Don't ask why it is not shielded or in a building. It's 40K

Looks great. What all is it made of. I'd like to make some cool terrain pieces, but have no idea where to start.

Thanks guys. I'll go with the walkways then
Orkitron5000: It's mostly made out of old packaging I savaged from our recycle bin

The big dome was part of an egg like box for some chocolates.
The 4 grey/silver blocks are unused legs for a chest of draws.
All the brown and grey card you see are from empty GW packaging boxes and other empty packaging.
I also used 5mm foam core board which is pretty cheap.
For the round rods and tubes I use Styrene parts from any model supply shop.
Finally any detail is added from my bits box.

A lot of cutting, sawing, gluing and swearing later I get something like what you see.
The main thing is to look at an empty bottle, carton or broken thingy ma jig and try to imagine what it could be in the grim darkness of the far futer

Use a ruler. Take your time. Measure twice, cut once. Be precise.

Also remember to use the right glue
Styrene to Styrene – Use model glue.
Card to card – Use PVA glue.
Styrene to Card – Use PVA or Super glue.

I'm iffy about the walkways. If you want to break it up, maybe add walkways but only on 2-3 sides?

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

You could have three walkways, and then on the side with no walkway, place a door with an arch. Furthermore, the dome itself could house the reactor, making the complex a sort of ferrocrete dome to house it.

Beautiful! Add steps up to one walkway: sorted.

Wow! Great terrain man! Really excellent. How are you going to paint it?

(BTW, is the dome a M&Ms box?)

Thanks for the comments guys. Hey Mr Hyenajoe, No it's not M&Ms. We are racking our brains trying to remember...
Quick update. So in the end I think I'll go for two walkways with the side ladders giving you access if your troops feel safe going near the radioactive reactor. I have also started on RIVETS OF DOOOOOooooomm...

Drilling 1mm holes, pop in a pin then add a drop of glue. Nice and easy

Well, back to it

If I might make a recommendation, removable walkways (magnetized, perhaps?) would allow you some flexibility with the building. But, this is a great piece no matter which way you go! Are you going to leave the dome clear, or paint it? If you leave it clear, are you going to stick something in it?

For this one the reactor will be painted. For some reason I see it a green. I don’t know why…
After I have done this model I am going to start on a Necron Piece. It will glow and if I can, it will have sound

Indeed I think leaving the walkways detachable is the way to go. Thanks 

Another update tonight!

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Not much done tonight. Long day at work!

Made the maintenance access door (suicide door) to the reactor core. You can quite easily imagine some hapless sod being told his sacrifice and bravery will be remembered. I will change the base to better accommodate the door and fill in the gap between the door and the dome.

Few at last. I have added all 142 rivets to the buttresses and made the housing fo rthe door. Still lots of GS'ing to do.

Started to paint. I went for a nice shade of green Some advice for anyone doing largish models. Use spray paint not a brush... sigh.

The walkways are not in the picture as I will do them later.

Well as this project comes to a close I am starting to think of my next one. With my new Necron army coming along nicely I thought I would do something to fit them. It will be a Necron Power node or some other piece of tomb that has managed to somehow survive 60 million not thousand but million years of tectonic activity?? The entire energy of the planet has failed to dent it.... Anyway.

I want it to look like it has come up through the ground. I plan on illuminating it as well.

Dose any one have any good ideas on how to illuminate the green part. I have no problem building the circuit its just trying to think of a way to diffuse the light of a couple of LEDs through the material in a naturalistic way. At first I thought of using polystyrene or something as it is slightly translucent but, I don't know??

Great paintjob on the generator! The rusty weathering is very nicely done, what did you use for it? (and how many layers?)

For your Necron power node, a core of transluscent plastic (like the plastic from a bottle of soda, which can be cut to sheets) covered with polystyrene could be an option. You could also try a clear resin cast as the core (this kind of resin can be coloured).

i am not keeping this a secret, but i copied your pics to my harddrive for future referrence... that building will eventually rebuild by me... the amount of details and the style as a whole is totally up my alley... very good work and i like how you strated painting it too...

also... the useage of junk for this is something that gives you some extra points in my view

cheers, and i hope you spoil us soon with more of this kind of excelent work!!!
