Here is one of my first attempts, decided to keep it simple and go with the default scheme:

Any thoughts?

They look fantastic! Perfect for massed IG, not too much detail, but a solid job for as many as you may end up doing!
Keep it up!

Nice job man, I love the default guard colours and these guys are going to look awesome when you field an entire army of them.

Those Guardsmen are amazing.

The shading on the cloth is just perfect, the green on the armour and guns is so smooth and even and faces look great too.

Really good detail for those small things! if possible maybe you can do eyes? I know i CANNOT paint eyes on guard for the life of me

Yeah eyes are tough, so I decided instead of ruining my model, I would apply excessive earth shades in the face and when dry and under normal lighting circumstances, it passes for comic-book type facial shadows.

Really good models, they look great. Speaking from experience now you can look forward to painting many, many, many.... many more, lol!

Fantastic job. Good detail without getting to in depth. After all, they are just guardsman.

I, however, do have a complaint/suggestion. Where is their kit? What do they fight with? Personally, I like to see guardsman covered in crap. The more pouches and grenades the better! Also, I'd be a little miffed if I got shorted a canteen by supply

Man, that looks pretty awesome. Good job on the flesh, and especially the white Skull-Aquila thing on the helmet and lasgun. White is a pretty hard color to get right.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. And yes I realized this AFTER I started by basecoat and I said, "oh well. these guys dropped their gear s they can be point-men or runners on the battlefield" but you have a valid point, they are dressed light for a season of Tyranid hunting.

excellent work. Despite the title of this thread reading "my first guardsmen," im not buying this as your first attempt at painting mini's. Clearly you have a good foundation of painting experience and your work shows it. Nice job on the guardsmen, I have a battleforce of my own and havent started it because I cannot choose a color scheme. Ultimately, I want to go with a scheme that is quick and easy and you may have provided a blueprint for that. I like your use of washes and even though this might be a simple paint scheme, you work leaves a viewer with the perception that days were spent on the model.....wonderful job!
