I was thinking of how Nids can't use emplaced guns and I thought of a solution. It took me about 20 seconds before I and thought "oh right, that won't work."
But during those 20 seconds I got interested enough in the idea and spun that interest in another direction...
so the idea was, just ally in space marines, model them up like terran infested and have them be part of the hive... except of course Nids can't ally.
So I put to you, If a guy comes into your local shop and wants to play his nid/marine combo, would you play him?
The premise is that he has a good looking infested theme going, the rule of cool is with him, but he's obviously gone for specific high powered models that fill the gaps that the Nids have. Infested Bastion, the works.
He wants to play them as battle brothers as his fluff states that they are mindlessly loyal to his brood mother. (or whatever Nids have..)

I open the rulebook, show him the allies page. End of the story. If you build a real fluffy list, in a friendly game...sure, why not. But if you're not bending, but actually breaking the rules, I'm at my limit.
...not to mention that Tyranids are playable and not as bad as everyone makes them out to be.

Yeah you said if someone came in to local store, and just wanted to play with this neatly painted army. Yeah, it should be fun.
If someone has a cool story and took the time to paint it up. I'd be down. Friendly game is friendly game. If he slaughtered me because of how broken he made the army, I might not play him again, but I think it would be fun run through it and see how it works.
I'm all for house rules if they arent completely self-serving, they have a good fluff, and the models fit.
and of course its just a casual game with good people.

For a fun game? Sure I would. The official allies list is bollocks, anyways, and there is GW fluff about Tyranids "infesting" humans. As long as someone can make up a (subjectively) valid fluff reason for why his combo should work, I'd pretty much let anyone ally with anyone. Obviously, this means that some combinations would work better than others, or not at all, but in this case it should be fine for me.
Icculus wrote:If he slaughtered me because of how broken he made the army, I might not play him again, but I think it would be fun run through it and see how it works.
^ Also, that.
I'd be mildly interested in what exactly the reason that Tyranids should be "forever alone" would be, though. It can't be the fluff, seeing how silly some of the other combinations are. Is there a game mechanic I did not consider that would make Tyranids " OP" as soon as they ally with anything?

As the above chaps have said go imp guard and it would be a fun game. infact there was a precedent for it waaaay back where Genestealers were a Nid sub-codex and it allowed the use of imperial guard as "cult" troops. so for fluffy fun why not.

Nope. Never. Not only am I leery about playing Tyranids to begin with, (I've had a lot of bad experiences with Tyranids players...and no good ones, come to think of it.) the proposal in question is beyond the boundaries of normal rules-bending. It's right up there with fandexes or other made-up rules. It's something I would do A) for a close friend, and B) if I had nothing better to do. And I don't have any close friends who play Tyranids.

Not in a regular game. The rules say that they cannot do that. It has happened in the fluff, but rules and fluff are separate.
It it was for an ongoing series of games that was an ad-hoc campaign, and he had the background written for it, I might consider it as long as it doesn't turn into an ally of the week type situation.

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

I'm not a fan of allies in general, because of that very fact. Tyranids get screwed out of hand while everyone else benefits, and that's not fair. I also find that the allies rules are only ever used to circumvent a given army's weaknesses, but keeping their strengths.

Might as well.
If they're new and just want a game and they haven't done research or anything I'm up for that.
If they are going to start an army but only have scraps of Tyranids and Space Marines I'm up for that.
If they have come up with some sort of tactic using something that seems broken or dodgy, nah, if they had the time to think up a way to screw another player over I don't really want to give them my time, as harsh as it sounds.
If me and my friend have a game next week it might end up as Chaos Space Marines & Space Marines V.S Tyranids & Space Marines so why not?

The closest I could see would be an Imperial Guard force with Genestealers, to represent a cult taking over local militia and causing unrest just before the hive fleet shows up. And it would have to be converted and painted to look like such a force - not just off the shelf guard with some 'Stealer squads alongside.
