Hey guys and gals

So I'm playing in a friendly tournament in the next couple of weeks to finish off a painting challenge we've be doing (200pts a month).
I've been painting up my Ogres and have:
11 bulls (ironfists)
9 ironguts
4 mournfang (Ironfists heavy armour)
1 stonehorn
1 butcher
1 Battle Standard Bearer

Its a 1500pt round robin tournament, and the opponents will be Dark Elves (crossbow/black guard heavy), Chaos Dwarfs, Empire x2, and Warriors of Chaos.

I was just wondering what is better for the Mournfang. 1 unit of 4, or 2 units of 2?
Thanks

1 unit of 4, with a standard carrying dragonhide banner, everyone else has ironfists and hev armor.

I agree with Darth here, the hand weapons/ironfists/heavy armour combo is superior in every way to great weapons imo, the extra armour save and ward save is much more useful than the extra points of strength from the great weapon.

The Dragonhide Banner is the most commonly used banner and I think Mournfangs make better use of it than anyone else as they can re roll all their saves vs strength 3 or lower, but other banners like the Flaming Banner or Gleaming Pennant (as Mournfangs are likely to be out of the Generals 12" bubble) could be useful too.

I've seen two units of 2 with heavy armour ironfists working well, their not enough of a points sink for your opponent to focus on and they are too powerful for most of the enemies you'd be sizing them up against

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I quite have enough points spare to throw in a standard with the Dragonbanner. I think I prefer having more bull/irongut bodies on the board. I have a bad feeling they are going to drop like flies.

Is a unit of 4 not too large a target in such a small army?

Also, should I take Slaughtermaster, or Butcher and Bruiser BSB?

Stick them out on a flank with a couple of sabretooths.

Sabretooths tie up redirectors and the mournfang are in the enemies flank turn 3.

Just keep everything far enough apart to not force panic checks.
If you wanted to try something funny, run a Bruiser BSB with the Long Strider big name and the banner of swiftness. It gives you a M8 ogre who can keep up with the Mournfangs.

I ran 5 in a single line against WoC earlier today. They did some mild obliteration of some Dragon Ogres. No extra banner, just standard command.

You need a BSB. BADLY. Ogres cannot afford to have units flee and get run down. And you will pile up casualties quickly against most armies because your saves are somewhat sad. When I run I put my Tyrant/Bruiser in a unit of Ironguts, along with a wizard, AND my BSB. It is the only way you will be able to stay in combat against even slightly above average troops. Everyone that doesn't beat you by Initiative is using great weapons to eliminate your higher Toughness.

You have to do everything you can to stay in combat. You don't have to necessarily WIN every combat, but you cannot afford to flee ANY combat.

Yeah, I've found that with BSB's my Ogres like to run.
I had a 1,000 point army of Ogres run/die because of 8 ethereal models and a crazy vampire.
due to vanguard and vanhals I had no oppotunity to avoid them.

Of course, then you run the same risks you always run when your highest-cost unit, your greatest CC threat, your General, your BSB, and your main chunk of magic offense and defense are all the same target.

I think Ogres are unfortunately well-suited to this sort of ploy, but it still leaves them more vulnerable to Mindrazor and Purple Sun and such. Not to mention that you're trading more chances to pass/fail a Break test for one. Not better or worse, mathematically. Just more affected by kooky outliers.

Good god how I hate playing ethereal models sometimes!

Thanks for the help fellows.
The tourney is this weekend and I think I've got my list sorted. I have been slightly impeded by only using stuff that is painted, and I don't think I'll get my BSB done in time.

Slaughtermaster - ironcurse Icon

9 Bulls with ironfists, std/mus
9 Ironguts with full command banner of discipline

3 Mournfang Cav, heavy armour/ironfists
1 Sabretusk
1 Sabretusk

1 Stonehorn

Hopefully it will be enough. I'm planning on winning through painting score - which makes up the vast amount of tourney points
