hi guys,

posted this up in my P&M blog this morning, but wanted to expose this question to a wider audience. I'm putting together two aspiring champions for CSM units for my night lords, using a couple of the chosen models from the DV set:

I'm happy with the LC guy, but I'm not sure about the bolter guy.

first off, I'd be running him with a power sword. he's get a sword strapped to his leg, which I will paint up all fancy and whatnot, but he's not waving it about. is that good enough for wysiwyg in a tournament setting? second, I'm not sure about the left shoulder pad. I like the sculpt, but it doesn't match up with the puppetswar pads the rest of my CSM will be wearing (seen on the LC guy and in spoiler)

Spoiler:

I could probably hack off the sculpted pad, but I don't know if I could do it well I'd also lose out on some really nice detail. I feel like the chapter symbol needs to be on there somewhere (he's a champion, after all), but I'm not sure where. I could slap a decal on the right shoulder pad, but I think he'd be the only model in my army that uses a decal. I could maybe replace the horns on his helmet with bat wings, though I'd need a source for those. I'm also not overly fond of that look.

what do you guys think? should I use him as-is, hack off the left shoulder pad or do you have an idea for how to work the chapter symbol in there some other way?

cheers

The sword on the left guy is fairly small isn't it? The axe guy from DV would probably easy to convert, change the axe to a sword and shave down the shoulder and throw one of the others over it.

the axe guy would definitely be the easiest to convert, but I've already appropriated the axe arm for my chaos lord. makes for a sexy axe of blind fury :p

edit: here's a better shot of the sword:

it's a bit short/thin compared to what most guys are waving around, but it does run most of the length of his leg and is longer than the combat knife you find on sprues. if this won't pass wysiwyg, it's not the end of the world. I can just put together a champ from the CSM squad box instead of using the DV bolter guy

I would say its fine. The NL are known to carry small swords with them everywhere, so it shouldn't be a problem if one of them has a sharper one.

The problem in my opinion isn't wysiwyg but the distinction between other models of the same sculpt on the table. In most cases this'll probably be no problem especially if you paint it up all fancy. (a strong osl glow or something). But you could attach another sheathed blade to his other side and claim that he fights with two shorter powerswords that together are as good as a full blade. It might be a little strang but creates a distinguishable difference to the other models.

Something similar is with the shoulder guard. It is a nice detail on it's own but at the end of the day it is "just the cool detail that all dark vengance models have".
As a hobbyist i can understand that you want to keep the detail. But have you thought about a middleway? There must be some nice wing bitz in the vampire fantasy army. (on their shields and helmets i think) You could cut those up and glue them next to the demons face on the shoulder.

hmm, that's an interesting idea. I'll have to have a look around some of the bitz sites and see if something pops out. I'm not familiar with the fantasy line at all

I think some of the riding skeletons have helmets with wing applications. Those are probably the right size.

after poking around on a few bits sites, I ended up just hacking off the sculpted shoulder pad. it took some doing, but here's a mockup of the end result:

thanks for the ideas
