So...painting a squad of terminators up as Deathwatch marines but using Grey Knights rules for them, as an allied detachment for my Space Marines. Kosher or no? Anyone else do this?

As long as its WYSIWYG and I can tell the obvious differences between them and your normal Marines, I wouldn't have a problem with it. You get more brownie points if the job is well done hahaha.

I've run into a player before who claimed that Grey Knights (Or any non-Codex: Space Marines space marines) not painted in their correct scheme are by definition not WYSIWYG. That's what's worrying me.

While it may not be "correct", violating WYSIWYG is a pretty piss-poor argument against it. That is a bit worrying...

I'd be fine with it in the sense that I would not refuse to play you or anything, but it is a bit strained counts-as.

I mean how using Grey Knight rules make them any more Deathwatchy? They'll be psykers with force weapons with pereferred enemy Daemons. Wheras Deathwatch are (mostly) non-psykers, use normal weapons and hate aliens.

WYSIWYG does not extend to paintjobs.

As long as the "Deathwatch" terminators have the proper GK equipment they satisfy the requirement.

Man, people like that wouldn't make me worry about being able to field the models, it would make me worry about the state of 40K in general, lol.

Do what you want, they are your models. WYSIWYG is all about the wargear and equipment that is listed in the codex entry, not the armor color. You should ask the guy how he thinks anyone would ever be able to field Successor chapters of Space Marines, as not all of the (in fact almost none of them) carry the color scheme of their parent chapter.

Aye, I feel you'd be better off using one of the other marine +1 codexes for Deathwatch, the psyker thing isn't a great match.

Using the models is totally cool (I use some of them, GK have wicked models), but I don't think their rules would make for good deathwatch. If anything, Space Wolf rules might be better, with all their special weapons, split fire, etc. Though I still think Sternguard make for the best deathwatch rules; in truth, you wouldn't need to use allies rules, just paint and kitbash up the Sternguard as your Deathwatch.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Was really planning on just having a single unit of terminators as an escort for an Inquisitor, so I think for my purposes they'd work out just fine. (Probably wouldn't be doing a whole lot with their psyker abilities, so I think it would stay fluffy...)

40k would become a sad place if WYSIWYG started to refer to paintjobs. How far does one even take that? If they aren't in the correct shade and tone, does that still violate the rules in their mind?

I think if you use a combination of kits. Between the regular and grey knight terminators you'll be able to create a look of "Advanced" pattern terminators that would be befitting for an Inquistorial escort.

This was something I knocked together with spare parts from both kits. I think it gets far enough away from the Aegis armour style to be distinct. Perhaps even use regular Terminator helmets.

Sternguard would fit better really with their special ammo, but as long as the models have the right equipment it's fine.

^Seconded. Sternguard make MUCH better Deathwatch than Grey Knights do if you want to make the force for fluff purposes or for painting them; if you're into the rules better just to leave them as Grey Knights.

That's not to say you can't innovate with the paint scheme; my Grey Knights use dark green instead of red as a detail color, for instance, and there's a guy who just posted some black/silver/red Grey Knights over in the painting forum that look pretty cool.

I definitely want them for the rules benefits, I just really dislike the way Grey Knights look. I was hoping that disguising them as Deathwatch would make them more palatable to my eye.

Sternguard really are the best unit to represent a Deathwatch Kill Team. However, Crowe and a couple of Purifiers also work nicely as a Black Shield with a bunch of veteran Deathwatch Marines.

As to the TDA Deathwatch, sounds awesome! I say go for it, as the rule of cool wins hands down.
