This model is toughness seven with six wounds and has the ability to get wounds regenerated either through biomancy or greater rewards. In addition, it could possibly get re-roll saves or a 4+ FnP from rewards. On top of all this it could boost its toughness D3 if it manages to get iron arm. So it makes me thing did they take the survivability of this guy just a tad to far?

IMO Worst Case Scenario.
Daemon gets 4+ FnP reward
Daemon gets Soul Eater reward (On a 2+ it gets an extra wound up to 10 total, happens after killing something in assault phase)
Biomancy: Life leach; Iron arm; warp speed

It will practically instant kill anything that normally fights it. It could take a squad of dreadnoughts toe to toe and win. Even conventional shooting might need 6's to wound. S3, T3 armies cant even touch it in combat.

Tarpit him with a blob or just kite him. He doesn't have enough attacks to wipe out a huge blob in a timely manner, and he can't run (slow and purposeful) or fly (no wings), so he is most likely not going to catch you.

It might help to know what army you use, if your asking specifically how you could take it down.

I don't know why people complain about GK so much... It's just a game, and nobody complains about Mephiston... So why complain about Draigo?

Its a general question. If your running 7 venoms you should be fine against daemons on most occasions. However, believe or not I see fewer dark eldar players in 6th edition then any other army.

for vanilla marines, sternguard will be your bread and butter, add lysander for even more fun, hitting on 3's rerolling, wounding on 2's. Even with his FNP that is a lot of wounds to save, that and lysander adds some teeth to the unit in cc.

I've had some success with Dreadknights, daemon hammers and Draigo, all are S10 force weapons and if the GUO has to assault through difficult terrain or you get to assault it with psyk-out grenadesyou get to strike first. Psilencers are also great with lots of shots and always wound daemons on 4+. Librarians with force staves and hopefully Iron Arm should do the trick as well.

What ranged weapons does it have? if it isn't that much of a threat at range, I'd just avoid it and shoot the rest of the daemon army.
Although, it it got the scoring warlord trait, then I would have a very smelly problem on my hands.

If iron arm goes off and the GUO gets T10 then railguns wont do it in a turn. 9 TL rail gun shots hits 6-8 times. Wounds 3 to 4 times. They save 1 to 2 times and fnp either 2 to 1. So that leaves you possibly 1 to 2 wounds caused per turn while the rest of there army goes unmolested.

In your nightmares...

As Dark Eldar, with pathetic ease. As Space Marines, pretty much the only things that will hurt it are Sternguard and lascannons. If you have neither, your best bet is just to ignore him and stay as far away as possible.

With every other army, your highest strength shooting attacks. Railguns, lascannons, D-Cannons, that sort of thing. It's hard to kill but everyone can do it.

I think daemons and tyranids will be easy piece for dark eldars. For space wolves bring a rune priest to shut down his biomancy.

I would like to se nids going toe to toe vs daemons, it was a good matchup in the old days for the nids. Do not know about now.

Please don't tell me that the best way to take down the Great Unclean One is with boatloads of poisoned attacks.

(Don't have the book--and GW's hardcover codexes have basically killed my urge to own them all for reading enjoyment--so maybe he's immune to poison or something?)

Out of my armies...

Orks - A mob of 30 boys may not kill it, but it wont kill them either.

Tau - See orks, just use Kroot. 20 kroot plus hounds. Probably wont be trying to kill it, just contain it.

SW - Rune Priest is all you need.

DE - As it has been said. Poison weapons. It doesn't stand a chance.

Chaos - My damonette allies will love to get a shot at it. Rending is always fun.

You can kill it with bolters too...

T7 is nice, but not unkillable. At least it got a decent amount of wounds, unlike the frail DE pain engines..

Now if it does get Iron Arm on the other hand...then things turn nasty

Poison still works and other 'i wound you so there' abilities, but regular guns...not so much

For Tyranids, the Swarmlord should out-last the GUO (and Shadows will eventually overpower Iron Arm).

Otherwise, massed Poison should work fine. I run a big brood of Hormagaunts every time I can (more for theme than anything else) and with Toxin they can really upset the GUO's day. Termagants (buffed with a Tervigon) are not as effective, but still reasonable, as are Gargoyles. Of course, 6th Ed allows us to easily tarpit things again so you could always just keep feeding Termagants to the GUO and keep it occupied more or less forever.

Avoid sending things like Trygons and Carnifexes after it; they will badly maul each other but it's a real waste of a killer unit. Linebreakers should not be used to hit sponges.

In many respects the Great Unclean One is easier to kill than a Tervigon. This is because the GUO's +1 Toughness means little against many weapons that are good against MCs, while his lack of armor can be a serious downside, especially against poisoned attacks, snipers, and massed high-strength high-AP attacks (assault cannons, scatter lasers, autocannons, psycannons, Lootas). While the GUO does have Shrouded and can thus get a 3+ cover if obscured or in area terrain, Slow and Purposeful means he'll have trouble engaging under normal circumstances anyway, so putting him in terrain may be risky.

All in all I actually think the GUO is not a big deal, especially given the expense involved in fielding one. Will some armies have trouble dealing with them? Sure, but I think many of those armies would have trouble dealing with other monstrous creatures, especially in substantial numbers. I remain much more concerned with Tervigons than I am with Great Unclean Ones... keep in mind that at 1500-1750 points, a competitive list needs to be able to deal with 3-5 Tyranid MCs, some of which may be Flying!

I wouldnt take the tourble to focus on this guy,..

Keep him in once place for as long as possible,.. he can be only on one place at a time,... is he camping on an objective? Go for the others,,, effectively throwing his points away.. Now he is denying an objective, that doesnt need denying...

But if you absolutely have to,

Poisoned weapons/ammo, rending weapons like assault cannons and snipers?
Power weapons/fist/klaws?

As necrons i would use tesseract labyrinth, tachyon arrows, warscythes and mindshackle scarabs with maybe a TWL heavy gauscannon from time to time if i could spare a shot. Oh yeah,... Deathmarks

If brute strength cannot do it,.. look to your characters skills and weapon upgrades.. Might be something interesting in there...
