Well, a good place to start is to figure out what game you are interested in? WFB? 40k? WM/H? Infinity? Malifaux? Something else?

Yeah. If you can, go to a GW store and ask them to run you through some intro games.

It'll give you an idea of whether or not you like GW games.

You could probably do the same thing with other FLGS, most of which are all but too happy to give you an idea of the games they sell.

Do you know other people that already play a specific game, or are you just buying anything to have something to paint?

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

It really depends on what kind of game you want to play or would be interested in collecting. Another factor can also be what games are played in your local area. It'd be no good starting an Infinity army if no one around you plays Infinity.

As has been suggested already head down to a gaming store in your area and check out the scene. Sit and watch a few battles and see if what is being played piques your interest.

Wargaming is usually an expensive hobby. Two relatively popular systems that do not cost an arm and a leg are Infinity and Malifaux. Infinity is sci fi and Malifaux is steam punk wild west with other stuff thrown in. Both are excellent games and have fantastic miniatures. The only downside is that some of the miniatures are difficult to assemble on account of small metal bits.

$85 doesn't buy too much these days.
I suggest NOT playing a GW game, if possible.

Hit up the Swap Shop here or head to Bartertown (Bartertown.com) when you know what you want. Buy it pre-owned. You'll get more bang for your buck.

A few important quetions.

1) What games are popular around you and among your friends? No point in getting involved in any game, no matter how expensive or cheap if there's no one to play against.

As at your local FLGS to get a feel for what's being played locally.

2) Of the games that are being played locally, which appeals to you most in terms of Gameplay and look. Most FLGS's will have demo nights or just times you can come by and see how the games look and play.

3) When it comes time to buy, Eric is definitely right in that it's a good idea to check Dakka, Bartertown, and even ebay to see what deals can be had. That said, supporting your local FLGS is never a bad thing either.

There is alot of good advice here, but for a new gamer, it's probably more usefull to find out what your local gaiming community is doing and find your niche there. Mostly likely you'll find a few games and one of them will have a gameplay style and faction that appeals to you.

Drop Zone Commander is good and not a bad price at £68 for a starter set and £15 for the rulebook.

Also Warmachines and Hordes are a good price at £36 for a one player starter box and £60-£70 for the 2 player box. Each of the one player boxes comes with a caster(your commander) and several warjacks/warbeasts along with the quick play rulebook and a set of counters for your chosen race. The 2 player starter sets include all this but for 2 races along with a unit of infantry for each force and the full rulebook and templates.

Free from GW's tyranny and the hobby is looking better for it

I'd highly recommend getting a demo of whatever you're interested in before buying in. Wyrd (Malifaux's parent company) has its Henchmen to give demos, Privateer Press (Warmachine/Hordes) has its Press Gangers. Not sure about Corvus Belli (Infinity), but finding someone to give you a demo shouldn't be too hard. Always best to figure out if you like a game before spending money on it, after all.
