Dear all,

I want to make a red sand terrain (3.5 x 2 ft). Can you please help and tell me how to do it? My budget is limited.

Back when I started I wanted some red sand and I just used normal sand, then brushed on some watered-down orange paint on it. Worked like a charm.

The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around.

Emulsion paint is cheap.
Should be able to get that shade without a problem.
For dunes, just carve up some expanded polystyrene packaging.
The for the bushes, try looking for some dried flowers in a hobby shop that does stuff for sewing, flower arranging & such

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I'm waking this thread as I want to do the same thing but in another way.

I have some red sand at home that should look like a real alien desert as it's not earth red but instead:

Number 3.

Instead I want it to stick on everthing.
Legs, Terrain, Ranger cloaks.

I don't want to paint it afterwards.
How do I avoid having my terrain case full of sand?

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

You can get red builder's sand which may save you painting the whole board red, and just save your painting for spots you want to make some colour variation on.

To avoid loose sand everywhere afterwards, you'll need to wait until everything's completely dry, brush off any loose sand, then add a thick coat of matt varnish to all the sand areas.

Will that keep all of the sand in place or just allmost all sand?

99% of the sand should stay on with a coat of varnish.

Vallejo Oxide Paste and the ~100% match Vallejo Model Air Fire Red paint work well, which I'm doing for my necrons.

Nah not doing Mars red. Doing clear red colored sand.
Sand dunes only no rock. And a feeling that it's extremely fine sand so it sticks everywere.

I got fed up with sand falling off my bases so mixed it into paint which worked much better.

I would suggest mixing it into pva rather than applying the glue then dipping the model in the sand.

I agree. Mix the sand with watered down PVA.

Remember that either varnish or PVA will tend to make the final tone a bit darker than the original.

I found i great solution to this with my board. Get some modge podge or white glue and mix it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle. Give the areas you want to cover a spray and then put down the sand. once it's all placed spray the hell out of it with light mistings so you don't disturb the sand. This gives you a quick way to cover all the sand and seals it in great. It even holds on little piles of stones i have on the board too. I was amazed at the results!

Hope this helps
