Hey y'all,

So I've been thinking of picking up some allies to add some flavor and variety to my IG army (and to make things interesting), and I was wondering how viable chaos allies would be? I was thinking something small, maybe 500 pts or less.

Any ideas what to take? My vision currently is to have the guard do the shooting, and the chaos to do the close combat (and hopefully have the champions win some boons from the dark lords!) (Also side note does anyone know if the champions of chaos can earn a boon through killing an enemy character by shooting? How would they determine the champion was in fact the one that killed it?)

Grazie,

zhutch

Depends on what type of list your IG element is.

If it is a gunline; you want some Chaos stuff that can move upfield and grab objectives (Plague/Nurgle Marines)

If it is mech, some coverbusting Noise marines and a Balechicken wouldn't be a bad idea to soften stuff up as your Chimeras move upfield.

Gunline all the way! Plus artillery. and tanks. Of course.

Now I was thinking a lord and a couple tactical squads, but how do we feel about cultists? A waste since I already have IG?

Yeah, cultists are like guards, only with fewer options. You should take allies to bring flavour and tactical options you do not have out of your codex - in your case, MEQ, and especially tough MEQs as thecaptain says.
Take a cheap lord on bike with the Brand, and squad of PM. That will bring you a resilient mid-field unit, that will last all game. The lord is a pain to focus as he moves a lot and got T6, and a pain to ignore thanks to the brand.

Then it opens all the other goodies : Balechicken, spawns, Nurgle bikers to ride with your lord...

as allies, you only get 1 FA choice.... so sad.

Still 1-2 squads of PM, 1 FA, 1 Lord, and maybe some autocannon/lascannon havocs in your gun line wouldnt be bad.

You could take oblits if you like the models or take termicide as they are better drop troops than stormtroopers

Can't have 2 squads of PM since they are elites. Truth be told allying IG with chaos isn't one of your best options, if you want to get some assaulty units go GK allies which are also battle brothers or dark angels for your all around allied attachment. Also any marine ally could give any of your IG divination making some of their units a lot more deadlier.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Chaos brings nothing cheap to the table, in order to grab a heldrake which you probably won't need since you get access to the best flyers on the game being IG, you need to fill your HQ with a lord probably to avoid any of your two troop choices (marines or cultists) from running away in fear. I guess you could ally a juggernaut lord with some spawns which is one of the few good close combat units, and take cultists as troops to keep it cheap. Anything outside of that could be taken on loyalist marines at a better price/synergy due to battle brothers

Consdiering the Lord is rather usless, you're paying 2pts less for gakky MEQ. C:SM are superior, so are GHs.
Cultists are gak versions of IG.

If you want to take CSM, you need to use something that makes them worthwhile. As The Capt' already said, a Nurgle Lord with Plague marines would provide some tough forward objective holders than guard lack.

Go for it, heres my tactic: load up your chaos lord, put him in a valkryie and have him wreck havoc on gunline armies

Even if you ignore the fact that chaos are allies of convenience and therefore can't use IG transports, that's still a terrible idea.

You're wanting a kitted out Lord costing around 175-200pts to jump out of a Valk on turn 2 at the earliest, sit there, then receive a full turn of shooting from a gun-line. Good idea.

I guess you didn't read that plague marines aren't troops... so you would be bringing an elite unit that cannot hold objectives. Lords make troops of their marks only when they are the primary force, otherwise you don't get to make cult marines troops, meaning your only 2 options as allies are CSM and cultist both of which have better loyalist counterparts.

Right, I missed this too. Ally detachments dont get force org mods...

You can make a pretty nasty allied detachment:

Daemon Prince
(mark, wings, mace/brand/whatever, armor)
Heldrake
Havocs or Oblits
Termi-cide
CSM squad or Cultists

Ally them into a Guard Force using Vendettas, some jerks, some heavy jerks and you have an army. Plus, if you have a neat paint scheme, its fluffy!

Some fast attack options would jive well with an IG gunline. Heldrake, lord with brand and bike (nurgle = t6), or nurgle spawn are all great options.
