Subject: Eldarain vs The EvilOne Blood Angels Mirror Match.
Hello all, my brother and I recently played a game where we both fielded the exact same army list. My brother (TheEvilOne on Dakka) made the list, it provides some interesting issues against itself.
I have shamelessly stolen Jy2's battle report format, so thanks Jim
Eldarain vs TheEvilOne Blood Angels Mirror Match
Blood Angels Reclusiarch: Jump Pack
5 Assault Marines: Melta Gun
10 Tactical Marines: Plasma Gun, Lascannon. Rhino: Extra Armor
5 Tactical Marines: Combi Melta. Razorback Assault Cannons: Extra Armor
2x Furioso Dreadnoughts: Magna Grapple
Baal Predator: All Flamers
Blood Wolves I will be using my Space Wolves to Proxy the mirror of his army for visual clarity in the battle.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
We are playing the same 10 possible points system as was used in the BAO.
Mission:Primary: The Relic. Secondary: Big Guns Never Tire: 4 objectives
PRE-GAME THOUGHTS: Playing against a mirror image of your own list is going to be tricky, The way Evil has set the lists up we both have a lot of vehicles but very few ways of dealing with them at range. I foresee this being a bit of a game of chicken, with both of us trying to land the telling blows first. As this is the first time I've ever made a battle report I have a feeling keeping track of everything that entails might be a bit distracting.
Objectives: I place my Big Guns objectives on either side of my deployment zone (Why? I don't know, spoiler alert: I make some baffling decisions in this game)
He also places his on either side of his zone( At least the mirror theme is maintained.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Evil wins the roll off for both Table sides and Who gets first turn. He allows me to both deploy and go first.
My Reclusiarch gets Master of Offense (Furious Charge for him and his unit in the opponents deployment zone) as his Warlord Trait
His Reclusiarch gets the Redeployment trait, which is not much help as he places everything after me anyway.
Deployment:
Blood Wolves Deployment: I make a pretty bad mistake here, with Evil being able to deploy after me I should have kept my mobile elements more to the center so that I could use my movement in the first turn to counter his deployment. Instead I blindly overload the right side with all of my speed.
Blood Angels Deployment: He counters my refused flank with his Tactical squad both Dreadnoughts and his Assault Squad with the Reclusiarch.
I advance my Baal and Razorback up the right flank hoping to do some damage to one of the Dreadnoughts exposed beyond the square building. My Dreadnoughts head up the middle using the empty Rhino to screen them from the Lascannon in the tactical squad. My Assault squad hops over the building to head towards Evils outflanking force.
My Razorback scores a Penetrating hit against the Dreadnought, rendering the arm with the Melta gun useless. The Tactical Squad without a good target advance I try to hit an Assault marine with a snap shot from the Lascannon, but fail.
Blood Angels 1
Spoiler:
He shelters the Dreadnoughts on either side of the square building. His Baal advances out beyond the central building using the empty Rhino as cover.
His Razorback Flat outs the full 24" to end up sheltered on my side of the table threatening the objective I left miles away from my army. My inability to deal with this threat will cost me dearly later.
His Lascannon scores a Penetrating hit on my Razorback shaking it.
Blood Wolves 2
Spoiler:
I shelter the shaken Razorback on the other side of his square building. I disembark the shaken 5 man squad hoping to draw his Dreadnought and Assault Squad out in the open where I can counter attack them with my own Assault marines and the Baal. The Dreadnoughts run up further still using the Rhino for cover.
Two more headscratching decisions here. 1)I block LoS to his Rhino from my Lascannon, which with nothing better to shoot should have gone for first blood by shooting at it. 2) I somehow don't account for his lurking Razorback off to the left. I think I kill an Assault marine with the Lascannon. If anyone would like advice on target priority I'm apparently not the guy to ask
Blood Angels 2
Spoiler:
His Dreadnought and Assault squad bite on the tactical squad bait. His Other Dread heads into the middle. His Rhino pops smoke.
Yeah, this doesn't end well. Evil secures First Blood
His Dreadnought and Assault squad open fire on the Tactical squad, killing one. They then charge in, the Reclusiarch then kills 2, The Assault marines roll really well and put 6 wounds on the two remaining marines. But I roll far better on my saves than I wanted to and only one dies. Oh well. there's one left and the Dreadnought hasn't attacked yet, so his units should be out in the open for me next turn.
Spoiler:
The cross eyed Dreadnought rolls to hit.
Spoiler:
Blood Wolves 3
Spoiler:
I run away from the impending freedom of the Dreadnought and the Assault Squad.
My Dreadnought and Razorback Attempt to take down the Furioso. In the shooting phase my Dreadnought rolls a on his melta gun shot. The Razorback rolls three sixes to hit, which as we all know precludes it from rolling any sixes to Pen.
I attempt to assault his Dreadnought, hoping at least for mutually assured destruction. No such luck! While I am definitely doing enough to lose this game on my own the dice aren't helping either.
In the Assault Phase my lone Tactical marine is killed and his Dreadnought consolidates 6". When it rains...
Blood Angels 3
Spoiler:
His melta gun works just fine :(
So due most likely to still being butthurt about my turn 3 I don't have other pictures from Evil's turn 3.
The Baal swings around into my Deployment zone.
His Assault Squad attempts to charge my Tacticals but comes up short. His One armed cross-eyed Dreadnought heads for my Baal. It fails it's charge though. (Depth perception issues perhaps.)
His Razorback squad turbos back to make a play for the relic. The Tactical moves up to control the Big Guns objective.
Blood Wolves 4
Spoiler:
My Razorback drives behind his Baal for a rear armor shot, My Baal hidden behind that building sets up a Burninating on his Assault Squad.
In a last ditch attempt to take out the Dread my Assault squad hops behind him for a melta shot. They roll a for good measure. (There was no reason to do this though. My assault marine unit really should have been going after the Razorback for the last several turns)
The Flamestorm and Heavy Flamer wipe out the Assault squad and put a wound on the Reclusiarch.
The Razorback kills the Baal. Shooting from the Tactical squad fails to do anything to the Dreadnought (These guys aren't pulling their weight so far.)
Blood Angels 4
Spoiler:
His Dread makes sure he won't fail the charge against my Baal this time. His Reclusiarch walks towards the Tactical squad, hoping to use his jump pack in the assault phase.
Between solid rolling on his part and abysmal saves on mine the dreadnought wipes out the Assault squad in the shooting phase, it then charges the Reclusiarch. The One armed Dread charges the Baal. And his Chaplain charges the Tactical squad. The Tactical squad attempts to win back some of my favor by hitting with both the Lascannon as well as one hit from the Plasma gun (Though he burned himself to death in the process) He takes the wound from the plasma gun but makes the save against the instant death hit.
My tactical squad manages to kill the Chaplain.
His Dread destroys the Baal.
And his other stomps my chaplain into the dirt.
We both get Slay the Warlord.
Spoiler:
We stop the game here. I only have a 1 hull point Razorback and the rest of my tactical squad.
He gets The Relic and Wins Big Guns 1 Objective to none, he also has First Blood and Warlord. I only have Warlord.
Crushing Victory by the Blood Angels 9-1
POST-GAME THOUGHTS: Well that was rough. That was probably the most mistake filled game I've played since starting up 6th again. Full marks to TheEvilOne he capitalized on all my mistakes and was well deserving of the win.
Playing this mirror match was an interesting experience. I am very used to building my own lists with an idea of what I want to accomplish with it ahead of time. I found it very challenging to take a list unknown to me and play it on the fly. This probably explains why my brother is so much better at RTS games than I am.
Anyway it was still a fun time for the most part.
I'd just like to thank everyone who do these reports on a regular basis as this is a ton of work. How people like Jim and Ailaros pump out so many of these is beyond me but I'm very appreciative that they do.
Thanks for reading

Yeah, playing against the exact same list as yours is a totally different experience. Have you ever tried it?
We're going to be playing another with more well rounded forces soon.
And those Wolves look seriously awesome! Nice work!
Thanks, I appreciate you saying so
I'm interested to hear from anyone who has given this type of battle a try, it's definitely a good way to shake things up every once and a while.

1 suggestion though....you might want to put the results (Crushing Victory 9-1) and the Post-game Analysis in Spoilers. This way, it doesn't give away the result of the battle.
Just out of curiousity, any reason why you guys did a mirror match? Were you trying to understand his army or was it just all in good fun?

Excellent point. I will definitely do that from now on.
