I posted up a tournament report form a recent RTT that we went to here in NorCal is anyone is interested in reading about it. I brought the good old Nids!

Thanks for the write up. It's kind of sad that the Space Wolves codex has been broken down to such a small selection of units in the competitive scene.

Looks like you had a great time, against fun opponents.

It was a really great tournament, a lot of fun and I highly recommend them.

I think Wolves are still great, but those units are probably the best, honestly. He had a solid list, he just lacked mobility, that would be my only complaint.

Yeah, I definitely see more of a drop pod based strategy from them for the most part. Though still containing the same subsection of effective units.

Good job, Reece. Tyranids FTW!!!

BTW, I'm surprised that Frankie's army didn't do that well there. Probably just wasn't his day.

Congrats placing 1st Reecius!

Lack of terrain is common in small local tournaments. Perhaps Frontline Gaming could offer terrain + board rental service to tournament organizers. Promote Frontline Gaming's terrain selection and increase experience for tournament attendees!

Whatup reeicus I am Jonathan from your first game. Well played and I had a blast at the tournamentand glad you did as well. Tactically I made a few huge mistakes like not placing the objective on my board edge. But I honestly believe that makes for a booring game. I mean seriously 2 nid armies both fighting but stick to their sides and just shoot each other, so anticlimactic. Regardless of losing me the game it made it easily the best time I have had playing 40k in a long while and I can't wait for a rematch. Congratulations on winning the tournament and if I had to lose a game it is wonderful that If it was to the person who got first place =)

@ jy2 the reason for Frankie's placement is he had the dubious pleasure of going up against an iron armed flyrant and tervigon in his last game. Additionally because of Lady Luck were pretty much t9 the entire game. Of course when playing the relic mission I was his final opponent and betweent that and doom eating his cultists and 2 oblit squads his final game was just impossible or at least about as difficult a matchup as you can reasonably get in 40k.

@Scyrell

I had a great game, too. Very fun! It was cool to go from thinking, yeah, I am going to get my ass handed to me, to seeing a way to pull it out of the fire and then winning! Very fun. Even if you would have beaten me though, I still would really have enjoyed the game.

I agree 100% that having objectives on the back board edge is boring. That is the exact reason we don't let players do it in the BAO format! By forcing them to place objectives outside of their deployment zones, it creates much more dynamic games.

@Thread

Yes, pics would have been much better. I just didn't think to, I had my phone though. Next time I will.

And thanks for the cogratz!

Yup, that'll do it.

It's hard enough to play against 2 flyrants with Iron Arm....but when they are practically T9 the entire game, yeesh.

Oblits should definitely get Veterans of the Long War. Might have helped against the Doom.

He does use VotLW, but he always rolls so badly for them against the Doom. I routinely take out 2 units of them with the Doom.

@ Reecius

Very well played. Your batreps show the strength of the Swarmlord, especially when playing on such barren tables. The Swarmlord brings a lot of character to your army in lieu of the double Flyrant we see so often now. I probably won't break my Tyranids again until after their new codex is released... Hopefully walking Tyrants can make more of a come back again.

I have actually had a lot of success with a Dakka Tyrant build. I have run 1, 1 with Swarmy and 2. With Old Adversary and some shooing bugs to go with him they are quite good. Plus the 2+ save is very good these days.

Swarmy is invaluable. In my games he has proven to be just so good. I am currently running he and a Flyrant and that is a pretty nasty combo, too.

I have seen some Nid games versus Heresy armies. Swarmy can go toe to toe with all the Primarchs except for Horus.

Great report!

I have to ask though, what was in your buddies' GK/IG army? I am trying to make that combination sing.

@Dozer Blades

Yeah, so far in our test games, Swarmy is the last word in assault if he gets Iron Arm. Nothing is able to hang with him, Draigo can make a fight of it, but still usually loses.

Last week we were trying out Chaos/Daemon combos and Swarmy had Iron Arm and Warp Speed, went right through a fully tooled up Bloodthrister and Abbadon without taking a wound, it was crazy.

Without Iron Arm he is a lot less durable, but still pretty butch.

@Dorksim

He ran a mini Draigo Paladin Star (6 pallies), Coteaz, 10 Man Strike Squad, 2 min/maxed Acolyte Squads, a Dreadknight and I believe a Blob of IG with Auto-Cannons behind and Aegis with a Quad Gun.

I will see if I can get his exact list. He did really well, only losing to triple Hell Turkey/9 Oblit Chaos in a close game.

Man, seeing all these bug reports really has me wanting to play them. If I didn't blow my half year hobby budget on necrons I probably would. What makes swarm lord so good as a buffing character though? I know he has the extended synapse, and you don't want him getting in base to base, but what else does he bring? It seems a flyrant and swarmy is a SICK combo.

The Swarmlord has an extended Synapse, but also can give a unit within 18" preferred enemy or furios. In addition, having 4 powers, of which he can use two, it's pretty likely that he'll roll Endurance.

Endurance is a job for Tervigons. Swarmy has a chance to get Invisibility, which is just plain nasty for Tyranids.

Telepathy is very strong on the Swarmy I agree. Which is better depends on the army you're facing, I believe.
I usually roll on Biomancy a few times, until I get Iron Arm, Endurance or sometimes Enfeeble, then make sure I switch over to Telepathy for at least one or two rolls. Psychic Shriek and Puppet Master are both great to combo with a Biomancy power, and then it's of course also very worth it to Invisible yourself.

nice battle report. I am surprised you did not face more flyers. I like the Swarmlord a lot, but rarely go to a tourney without at least 1 flyrant. It is too bad that Nids don't have more options for flyers in other spots other than HQ section. Thanks for the report. Cheers maybe I will see you at adepticon

What a strange quantity of Chaos Space Marines present at that tournament. In any case, glad to see Tyranids grabbing some victories. I'm always curious to see how the Swarmlord does, as I've preferred dual Flyrants myself. Interesting you had no early deaths with him having no Tyrant Guard.

I think Iron Arm is better for Swarmy. Invisibility is nice, but a Swarmlord doesn't really need it he is going to squash everything in cc, I would rather have a chance for iron arm and then either Enfeeble, Endurance or warp speed... IMO

Invisibility isn't for Swarmy, though he could cast it on himself if needed. Rather, it is for the rather large block of 20 gargoyles that usually accompanies Swarmy. Poisoned, Furious Charge, Prefered Enemy, FNP (from tervigons) and now Invisibility....those gargoyles are nasty indeed!

CSM have been the most popular army out here at events, recently. People like them!

Swarmy is a beast, I always go for Iron Arm first, I have found that makes him all but unstoppable.

I like Invisibility too, but for the big nasties Biomancy has been my favorite choice.
