Is it worth taking this character if you dont use the zombie units? I figure using him and a bodyguard of terminators.

How do you guys use him?

Without the zombies, I think he is just ok. The main problem is you can make a Nurgle lord on a bike or in terminator armor for less. The special rules and psyker bonus aren't amazing so he is relying heavily on his strong daemon weapon.

yes, zombies are his best rule and if you arent using that I dont see much point is paying such a premium for a nurgle lord in terminator armor.

Destroyer Hive is amazing. Manreaper isn't bad.

But yes, if you're not using a few zombie units you're wasting his full potential.

I think he's worth it. But he is slow, but bringing him in a LR with termies might work. Zombies are even slower with SaP. This is a bit of topic, but do you guys have good experience brining zombies?

They're annoying. They really don't do much in CC, don't expect them to shine even with weight of dice. They make excellent tarpits. Units of 20 are okay, but I'd just go with 30. 2 units of 30 can hold an objective each all game. Just remember to spread them out to avoid templates and blasts. They are succeptible to tank shocking though.

This. This, right here. Without the use of zombies, the Destroyer Hive is what can make him worth much more than a cheaper Lord or Sorcerer. The key is whether you'll be facing hordes that will suffer greatly from it - against TEQs and MEQs, not so much.

Meh, without the Plague Zombies there are things that are far better at that point range.

Typhus makes a great Oblitorator addition. He makes the Oblits really scary to charge and they allow him a shooty entrance to the field of play. You have to deal with him and the oblits when they arrive. Its a win win.

Being able to bring Cheap, fearless FNP scoring units to the table is pretty awesome as well.

I like typhus. Hes my normal commander.

Iv had major success throwing typhus at heavy enemy assault units. Most things tend to simply break when Typhus hits them, because of the Destroyer Hive, Fnp and Manreaper. It really IS that good of a cc weapon

His daemon weapon, hive, being a TEQ with FNP and all his other little tricks makes him amazing. Simply add to any squad and charge things, when it's looking bad, or after a challenge is still going on and you get surrounded (because of all the pile in's) the destroyer hive can beat both the challenge and the unit that's there as well at the same time.

Well, I am running a death Guard army, so unlocking plague marines is a must. I'm not crazy about the zombies (although I like the idea of them).

I figure he can be good at CC, and do some sorcerer work as well.

So zombies aside you guys think he is still worth it since he still makes plague marines troops and such?

He is entirely usable. I'd rather run a Nurgle lord with black mace or fist & claw and save 75+ points personally.

He's a pretty good deathstar unit. With his crazy T/W/fnp he is almost impossible to take down. He is good against anything in CC, MEQ by virtue of his manreaper, hordes due to the destroyer hive, he is great in a challenge because of force weapon and huge resilience.

He also has a 66% chance of getting the psychic power you want (mostly plague wind) so is helpful in the shooting phase.

He always has fear if you take him as your warlord so there is yet another benefit.

He often does the job that Abbaddon does but for 35 less points, his only weakness being walkers. But how often do you run into those in a game?

Also there is the fact he unlocks plague marines, and since I would consider them the best cult troop I'd probably be getting a nurgle lord anyway so might as well pay the 100 points to get all the benefits.
