Hey people new to dakka dakka but not to warhammer 40k I've been having some issues with Space Marines and their drop pods full of veterans with combi-meltas/ combi-plasma weapons
Is there a unit that can sit in the back and deal with Drop pods and still be effective in the rest of the game so that lots of points aren't tied up in the back

I would suggest lootas. Great long range, str 7 d3 shoots.
I run a squad of 8 lootas and a big mek with SAG.
What units are the drop pod troops targeting?

So, you want to add more backfield units to the ones they are already destroying? That seems counter intuitive to me.
Either way, lootas are the best option IMO.
If they are dropping close to your Loota units and taking them out, you could always throw a couple big mobs of gretchin to act as a meat shield as well as a way to section off parts of the board preventing him from dropping so close.
With 48", depending on deployment you could stick the lootas relatively near a board edge, then surround the flanks with gretchin spaced to full 2" coherency. This should help mitigate where the pods are landing.
Same can be done with Boyz. Use large units to limit where they can land.

I run into the same problems with drop pods combi flamers and combi melta's and some times vs blood angels a blender dred with a flamer as well. pretty much I am going to lose some of my lootas if not most. Last game I had the aegis with quad gun and it did really well marines failed a ton of saves and it helped allot although the game before a blender dred dropped near it fried the gretchin manning it and some loota's then it manned my quad gun and shot my dakka jets out of the sky =P. Game was over turn one pretty much lost a battlewagon and half the loota's in it half the other squad of lootas to the dreds flame template mega nobs in a truk did alright for a bit until I failed 6 2+ saves in a row. Dakka jets gpt intercepted by my own quad gun it was just one of those games where you just get destroyed. To combat the drop pods I would probably go with lots of boys but I run TAC and hate foot slogging a ton of boys.

Bubble-wrap.
Flamers are the main thing killing your lootas because they deny cover. Meltas are killing your vehicles because they are close enough to get the 2D6 pen bonus.
Take a little less toyz than you normally would, and get a mess of boyz or grotz and just bubblewrap the hell out of your lootas/looted wagons. Yes they can still be targeted, but the point is they cant get close enough to hit them with those kombi flamers since it has a short range.
Drop pods cannot land on your units, as long as you didnt leave a gap big enough for it to land/deploy 4-5 Marines and still be further than 1inch from your own models, he cannot land in the danger zone. Most players using this tactic will have a dummy pod to draw the drop pod tactic out hoping you spread out a turn later...dont fall for it. If a pod or two drops and nothing or nothing of any real value was in it, dont break that bubble just sit back and loota fire it up.

My best way it's big, REAL BIG! boys swarm with lootas ans kans support. like this, http://hq-builder.com/roster/515c36b6028dbb4900a9b464 In most cases TAC just oneshooted by shoota drill.
Flamers can be problems but all about coverage expensive lootas by chipper boys.

Bubblewrap, or stick the support units in reserve. Could drop the SAG, and take mega-armor boss/big Mek to escort the Lootas on the board (for S&P).
I like to use gretchin, and big guns for bubble wrap, also bikernobz make great bubblewrap, if your dice Rollin is good.

Bubblewrap and Big Gunz. Then have your Lootas dakka the hell out of whatever steps out of the pod.

personally (just through my own experience), drop pods are not a problem to my orks: de'z gits made da classic mistake - attacking an ork who hasn't even found 'em yet!
y'see, from my ork career, I have been attacked three times by drop pod assaults, and every time I came out on top with a small mob of boyz. mind you I'm not saying they aren't a big threat - I think Mork (or Gork) was on my side when I rolled the dice. against things like daemons, I counter with lootas/burnas or just standard mobs of 10.
